USF4 Ken Match-up Thread: Updating 1st Post Edition!

F.mk is +1

A perfectly timed crouch tech will only lose to a ex tt or a perfectly timed throw. It beats all his other options

What can I do against an extremely turtle blanka? Can’t throw fireballs, can’t jump and his cr.hp keeps me at a distance where i cannot do anything…

my city has the 2 best Blanka players in America imo, Riceata and CCG Lapchi so i have lots of experience.
you have to be even more of a turtle than the Blanka so that he loses his charge. if you knock him down, never go for a safejump if he has meter (EX Upball). i almost always go for empty jump delayed crouch tech so that he burns his meter but if he wakes up with a throw then you tech. one of your main objectives should be to get him to burn his meter then you can safe jump pressure him to kingdom come. blanka without meter is just a baby.

imo, blanka is one of ken’s hardest matchups.

Not sure if this is old or not but I was messing around in training mode and found an unblockable on Cammy after a forward throw. You take a small step back and whiff a crouching strong and then jump in FP with an OS lk tatsu to catch up to whiffed dp’s.

Oh god, I don’t know whats up with that embedding. My apologies.

Does it work on any other characters with the same timing? Looks pretty sweet dude…

Peace,

G.

Nice video CoupleOfFew ^^. Can Cammy dash under or BD to escape?

Nice find. Just added it to my arsenal, gonna test it sometime. BTW you sound a lot like gootecks

In this match up, you need to play patient. You can’t go crazy and jump at him because you’ll get beaten that way. Only throw fireballs at far distance because he can’t do anything. Throw out some step kicks to push Blanka in the corner. If the Blanka player likes to hop around the stage, mashing your 3 frame cr.lp will beat it. Don’t bother doing safe jumps or cross ups, they’ll all get beaten. A badly spaced slide can be punish by a dp or a sweep. You should be using Ultra 1 in this match up. Ultra 2 is useless. You should never let Blanka jump in at you so dp his jumps. Overall be patient and push Blanka in the corner and you should/can win

anyone got tips versing Abel?

Yo guys, I’m having extreme trouble against’ Guile. Yeah, I get that it’s hard match up for Ken, but I’m just asking if you guys would give me something like a list of things that I should do/ try do or at least keep in mind when playing against Guile? Thanks in advance, all help is appreciated.

It’s a hard match up for Ken. Just play patient, throw out some step kicks to push Guile in the corner. If Guile likes to walk back after a sonic boom take advantage of it by walking up or dashing. Maybe match your fireball with his sonic boom
Looks like the new forum messed up the first posts. Might be time to do an overhaul update to the matchup thread or make a new one?
Adon

Spoiler

trevv:

funny thing happened during one endless match. I was fighting an adon and buffered an U2, and I accidentally reacted to a short off the wall jag kick. U2 connected and he died. So I went to the lab and tested it, you can react to almost full screen (90%) short off the wall jag kicks with U2 and adon cannot block this. I haven’t tested EX version yet.

King D.:

The adon match isn’t hard if u have good reaction my reactions only good enough most of the time to only react tohim leaving the ground so I stick to reversaling only when he’s close unless he got to predictable. One thing I noticed is that almost all adons even gamerbees will jag kick when they got u in the corner watch for it and if he’s abusing air jag kick (which is a lot harder to punish) focus every once in a while. And also his st.rh seems to be really good at keeping me out if ur good u can focus a part of it but u have to stand at the very edge of the hitbox to punish it wit step kick. And grabbing hIm a lot in kens mixups doesn’t seem that bad because his dps can be grabbed except ex (correct me if iam wrong) so he would have to waste 3 ex bars just to get out safely. And obviously use u1 here

GetTheFruit:

About Adon, there is an automatic safejump after Kara throw, which is K.throw > Forward dash > nj.mp, OS’ed with a late sweep which adds the option of punishing backdashes. It is tough to fight him on the ground, and he has great anti airs. To beat a good adon you must have GREAT reaction. By great reaction I mean reacting to jaguar kicks with SRK or ultra. Also, if adon WHIFFS ANY jaguar kick close to you, be ready to punish with cr.mk > ex tatsu, I have punished a whiffed EX jaguar kick with U2 once. Also, L.jaguar kick leaves adon at a frame disadvantage, it’s even punishable with heavy SRK if you block the first active frame, but try not to punish it if you block it at the tip. Also, adon can EASILY dash under any ambiguous crossup attempt. One thing am not sure about is when being knocked down by Adon, sometimes it’s hard to autocorrect SRK his ambiguous crossups so I’ll leave that to someone else to contribute.

Akuma

Spoiler

[spoiler=Unblockable]
Back throw > Dash > Tiny step back > J.mk

bowflexmike:

(I don’t really have an online strategy for this match-up BUT overall tactics are basically the same)

You have to be very patient and devious when you play Akuma, if you can get life lead that would be ideal to making the match your favor but you MUST pay attention to spacing. Footsies are out of the question lol it’s all about getting a nice read and having sharp defense IMO. CH cr.mp / kara-throw set-ups are bammer but can be dealt with by BLOCKING or TECHING. Eating a CH. cr.mp xx st.hk xxxxx DP is twice as bad as getting thrown. Try not to cr.mk out of position or hardly at all. Punishing a whiffed st.hk with hp.dp is golden and gets you good spacing. I don’t really recommend OS U2/Tatsu when Akuma is using U2 because he can teleport xx U2 on command. STAY OUT OF THE CORNER. After his forward throw he can put a stomping to your health with that unblockable shizz. I focus on reading FA and punishing with cr.mk x ex.tatsu etc… if you see him doing the jump-back fireball game don’t take the bait cause if you jump in you’re eating a DP or cr.hp! hmm that’s the best I can do off the top of my head lol good luck

Ikaru:

Akuma-If they don’t pick u2 you can OS u2 all day, or just do it on reaction to a teleport/bad air-fireball/gtfo of mix-up. I will use u2 to get out of a mix-up that I feel like is too overwhelming. Most of the cast can’t reach Ken in time before he recovers.

Dr.Chaos:

On Akuma you just want to be patient. You can’t really attack him after you knock him down so just stay on him, in a passive rushdown style. Just keep close by him. And poke him with low forward and S.Strong. Match his fireballs from time to time, focus, jump and whatever else to avoid them.

The Field!

-Vs Issei, There is some sloppy play in this match by both of us but you can kind of get the general picture. (Whenever the top 8 for singles is released you can see us with a much better showing)

-Here goes another set vs Fubarduck. As you can see in the 2nd round I tried to rush it and paid dearly for it. Just remember this match is all about being patient and not trying to rush anything.

highlulu:

vs. Akuma: if your facing an akuma that likes to flip cancel alot close range neutral jump or jump back fierce stuffs most of his options and stops him from being able to combo you even if he chooses right and stuffs you (only really happens if you react late, if you jump the second he starts his flip your pretty safe from his options)that’s the major stuff i have to bring to the table, some of it might be new some might be allready known but… yeah can’t hurt.

Balrog

Spoiler

[spoiler=Unblockables]
Forward throw in the corner > Whiff b.mk > j.HK

? wrote:

After a forward throw, you can use a LK Tatsu to remove his back charge to prevent him from using an EX-Dash Punch. Follow with either cr.LK or cr.MK to beat his Headbutt. After a backthrow, you can throw a meaty jab fireball and use a cr.MK into any special move to beat his EX-Dash Punch?s.

Doing a standard late crouch tech is unbelievably risky and not safe at all against Balrog. His EX headbutt has 12 frames of start-up and so you would have to wait until frame 13 to go for the crouch tech. If he had gone for the throw, you would have gotten thrown!!!

I believe it’s better to do a delayed crouch tech, but OS it with cr.mk (press db, lk, lp, mk all at the same time). If Balrog goes for the throw, you tech it, if he goes for the headbutt, it will whiff over your cr.mk. This option only loses if he goes for a normal and you aren’t spot on with your timing.

Hit lp+lk+mk for crouch tech with cr.mk and buffer f.srk.

That beats any ex armor and makes all headbutts whiff AND techs if they throw.

FYI cr.mk on block is -3 or -4, so it’s possible for Rog to punish with cr.jab > cr.short xx headbutt. Take precaution.

Game Plan: Knock Em’ Down!

Offense

-For the most part turtle until you get a knockdown. Approaching Rog with his great priority pokes is very risky and sometimes not even worth it. You will probably find more sucess just dancing around and making him come to you. Jumping @ Rog is not an option since his c.fierce will most likely beat everything you do. So just be patient and wait for your opening. The neutral ground game should look like walk back and forward. Stick out step kick everyonce in awhile so just the tip of it hits rog. Then walk back. Sometimes S.mp after it hits and it will usually counter hit them allowing you to get a c.mk in. Then back off. Throw out s.mp c.mk alot, they beat dash punches most of the time. Those are your go to pokes in this match. Tatsu combos are real good on rog. It moves him to the corner where it you can truely unleash your offense and not worry about taking massive damaging approaching him.

Defense

-To deal with Rogs dangerous offense you will have to be abel to tech pretty decent, because you most likely will be backed into the corner. Relax don’t panic and tech any throw attempts and when you get the chance Kara ex tatsu(shooting star, super man etc) to the other side of the screen for safety. Always be mindful of overheads, do your best to react quick enough so you don’t blow your lead. Blocked overheads can be punished with fierce shoryu or kara throw. Bait his sweep with kara focus every so often to get a knockdown or free damage, but be careful of becoming to predictable, because Rog has man ways of dealing with focus’s up close with his jabs and special punches. Keep him in check with low forward, but watch out for canceling it to hado because it can be headbutted into Ultra. Your going to have to watch out for Rogs pokes. His standing Rh for one is a monster and comes out real fast, his C.mk will beat your low forward if you become to predictable, sweep super range and speed block low alot during this match. And don’t forget the jab it leads into everything. Block Block Block and Tech Tech Tech!

Knockdown!

-This is what you want after you knock him down on the ground you want to glitch the most amount of life you can from him. Milk this for all its worth, or prepared to be bored for 99 secs! Start with knowning your options and his. Jump in kara throw beats all ex rush attempts to escape and will grab dash back but will lose to headbutt and ultra. Jump in low forward(buffer shoryu) will beat headbutt(since c.mk makes headbutt whiff) for free punish and beats any ex rush attempt but loses to ultra and block. Don’t your options far outweigh his and once you hit him with one thing and then another, they will most likely stay put and then fair game for regular cross ups and ShaNayNays(shannegians) So blow him up on wake up then runaway and keep him away with c.mk s.strong and step kick(but not too much of this)

Food For Thought

-Rog is one of those lucky characters that will enable you to get the full ultra if you fierce shoryu fadc his jump ins, just time it so it hits a bit late.

-When playing the fire ball game, once in awhile creep up to a rog that just jumped in and hit him with the step overhead kick. Why? Because when Balrogs jump in they like to keep there charge and to do that they must hold down back.

-All ex dash punches can be kara thrown or low forward shoryu’d use that to your advantage.

-Be careful throwing hadokens, Kens recovery is longer than other shotos making him more susceptible to dash in ultra.

I’m really frustrated right now. I might as well as make a new thread and start all over :<div>

The first post’s are such a mess right now…
