Just block and tech everything they do until the situation’s at neutral or in your favor. Everyone has a breaking point and become sloppy if everything they do is being nullified.
If it’s someone like Seth… I suggest praying… it helps… kinda

I’ve been having trouble with the zangief matchup lately because I keep getting walked into the corner. I can whiff punish ryu’s low forward but when it comes to gief DAMN IS IT HARD. Anyone got any tips? My general game plan revolves around step kicks here and there (not abused), fireballs here and there, poking his forward dash with low forward, punish whiffed green hand with low forward into EX tatsu. Basically just trying to contend with his st. mp in order to keep my positioning.
Fireballs in his face.ken walks faster then geif theres no reason you should b in the corner and if it does happen makes sure u have a ex to get out lol.also when fighting geif dont forget to counter poke.wiff punishing is good but some times you have to guese with counter pokes. Standing max range with s.mp and c.mp hado is great against geif.
O ya when geif uas no meter he cant hurt u with out jumping. Fireballs in his face all day and abuse max range step kick. When geif does get meter there is a safe spot to throw fireballs wear u only get hit by 1 hit of the green hand.in super u could punish with a dp or c.mk xx ex tatsu.i dnt know if thats the case in this game but u can still throw that fireball in the sweet spot and only get hit by one hit of the greenhand.taking this hit on purpose can b usefull to get him to waste his meter.if u have specific ?s plz ask and ill try my best to respond.this is my favorite matchup
Stop jumping. If hes doing random focuses u can walk foward and punish with c.mkxx dp or c.mkxx ex tatsu. Jumping is the last thing you want to be doing agaisnt ryu.also u say he has no combos.have u tried just siting there and waitng on him? If he has no footsies or fireball game you should prolly just walk and block and punish him for jumping
So I need help in the akuma match scrubby/bad spacing akumas r easy to beat but the ones that space well give me a very hard time. and his footspeed is so fast that its hard to play footsies. Any tips?
IMO it’s not as easy of a matchup as it looks. My friend plays Akuma and eating one friggin’ sweep can get pretty annoying.
You have to be really on point with your teching because if you press buttons, he will CH low strong sweep you, and if you don’t press buttons, he can kara grab you after two point-blank lights or a low strong.
Also learn how to get out of the corner unblockable: time an FA and input F, B, F (I think); that way you should be able to get reset in the air and be back in neutral position. (Akuma has a counter for this though, iirc to escape that counter you wakeup MP shoryu, I think)
Be careful with punishing a blocked (crouching) st.RH when he has Ultra, I just do MP shoryu.
Option selects are nice but only if you get a good read, because if he teleports towards you (eg. when you do jump in OS tatsu), both of your characters will away from each other.
(I don’t really have an online strategy for this match-up BUT overall tactics are basically the same)
You have to be very patient and devious when you play Akuma, if you can get life lead that would be ideal to making the match your favor but you MUST pay attention to spacing. Footsies are out of the question lol it’s all about getting a nice read and having sharp defense IMO. CH cr.mp / kara-throw set-ups are bammer but can be dealt with by BLOCKING or TECHING. Eating a CH. cr.mp xx st.hk xxxxx DP is twice as bad as getting thrown. Try not to cr.mk out of position or hardly at all. Punishing a whiffed st.hk with hp.dp is golden and gets you good spacing. I don’t really recommend OS U2/Tatsu when Akuma is using U2 because he can teleport xx U2 on command. STAY OUT OF THE CORNER. After his forward throw he can put a stomping to your health with that unblockable shizz. I focus on reading FA and punishing with cr.mk x ex.tatsu etc… if you see him doing the jump-back fireball game don’t take the bait cause if you jump in you’re eating a DP or cr.hp! hmm that’s the best I can do off the top of my head lol good luck
Thanks lilsicx, those were some nice tips! I don’t have any more questions that I can think of at the moment, but when I am done gief hunting I will let you know if I have more questions.
Vega
-Can stuff that cosmic heel ( df + HK ) with low strong
-Can whiff punish cosmic heel with sweep
-My method to auto correct wall dives is to put your stick in the down+forward position at the wall that vega lands on, then do SRK motion to hit that df again and MP when vega is about to hit/grab you. The key is not to panic and do srk right away, wait until he is about to hit you. Also, don’t switch by buffering srk at the other side halfway through, cuz if you hesitate, your srk wont come out. Pick a side and stick to it.
-On his wakeup meaty LK OS tatsu works against flip, OS U2 is too fast, and I think OS Ex tatsu is also too fast, meaty LK OS step kick is more reliable
-You can intercept vega before he reaches the wall if you block an EX wall dive so you don’t have to worry about the auto correct srk
Sorry if this is already known lol.
I think the first page for Rose needs some kind of update. Rose is not free on Wakeup she can dash out of the way quickly and you will eat a soul throw or soul spiral. For the life of me, I have more trouble against Rose than I do against Blanka. Even the Japanese player that was destroying everyone with Ken for 1.5hours on ver.2012 lost to a Rose. I don’t know what to do.
I just posted some tips about her in the other thread…someone will help us out soon, I’m having trouble with her as well…
I hate the Rose match up, I really do.
I just had a horrible set with an ok ish player. He switched to Rose for about 6 matches and it’s like grinding teeth, ugh.
All I can say is if she’s abusing her normals, bait them out and jump in over 1 of them. If she’s more patient and less pokey, you can get your cr.mk and step kick working.
OS sweep is definitely the way to go when she’s meterless. You need to force her to stay honest on her wake up. You can even OS U2 from a jump in on her wake up I think.
I need some advice too though, so I’ll shut up now…
Peace,
G.
I don’t think there’s much Ken can do against Rose besides play a better ground game to be honest. Rose’s a really solid character.
im pretty sure rose gets blown up by frame traps hard knock downs and a good ground game
I’ve somewhat have been playing again recently, around 10 hours hours every two weeks to be exact but I’ve just been playing a super solid ground game with very little mix-ups and every match-up besides Blanka, Akuma, Dhalsim, Seth, Viper, Yun, Yang and Fei Long feel just about even or in Ken’s favor.
I haven’t played much but for some reason my whiff punishing skills seems dramatically better, that alone made seems to have made a looot of pokes less scary. So yeah, improving on your ground game is the best advice I can give to anyone who’s struggling. Find that sweet spot to hover around and whiff punish when they’re on the offensive and pressure them once they’re scared to poke.
i am down for this advice
Oh, and playing Marvel helps… my offline scene’s almost completely Marvel so I had to pick it up… maybe this is why I can whiff punish on reaction now? I’m confident this is why I’m tapping my button’s harder though. Nothing like pulling off long Dante combos to warm the hands up then popin’ in AE and go to training mode feelin’ like a boss
Also, for those that have trouble playing footsies, I’ll try to type a quick example to help improve your footsies in training mode.
That walking back and forth you see a lot in the higher levels are the players hovering around sweet spots. One easy way to find a sweet spot to whiff punish certain moves is to hover in the range where you’ll be hit if you’re crouching but the move will whiff when standing. Your hitbox is bigger horizontally when you’re crouching.
Tired of getting hit by Deejay’s slide?
1.Go to training mode and choose your Ken and the opponent as Deejay. Find the spot where Deejay’s slide will hit when Ken’s crouching but whiff when standing. Record Deejay to slide and immediately block afterwards for about a second. Practice punishing his slide with cr.mk into fireball or DP or even a sweep.
Remember, this is for when your opponent relies on a move as a crutch, smarter players will try to fake you out or find other ways to pressure you.
Poking (Deejay’s slide in this case) loses to whiff punishing. When your opponent is down backing a lot and not walking backwards, especially during the mid screen game, you can safely apply pressure by walking forward and pokeing or throwing if you’re ballsy. Unfortunately Ken’s walk speed isn’t too great but at mid screen he does have his step kick, his thunder kick and fake thunder kick so you do have some options.
This is just a minor example of how you can improve on your fundamentals and I’ll finish this post with how you can look at the mid-screen ground game.
Whiff Punishing beats Poking
If your opponent likes to poke, bait them and punish.
**
Walking Forward beats Whiff Punishing
If your opponent is overly focused on whiff punishing or fails a whiff punish but you can’t punish (ex:whiffing a sweep), now’s your chance to take the initiative to take the offense. You can jump in during this time only if your opponent can’t anti-air on reaction very well.
**
Poking beats Walking Forward
If your opponent likes to walk forward, poke with a low like cr.mk into fireball. Be careful with using sweeps. If your opponent baits a sweep and jumps, they can get a full combo on you.
I would suggest this video be used in the match up section, some of the tactics the Ken uses are not that easy to pull off under pressure but it’s a start I guess.
