USF4 Ken Improvement Thread (+EVO Result)

make ken’s target combo not whiff on crouching opponents

the HP in the combo should stand the oponent up, like ryu’s cr.Hp imo

A lot of people are asking for target combos to be useful. Am I the only one that thinks we should leave it as is?

SSIV changes I would like:

  1. Switch dash, walk, and jab DP with Ryu. Ken should be the fast character with the difficult to punish jab DP, not Ryu.
  2. All tatsus should be at least +0 on hit, if not +1. He doesn’t get a knockdown from them, so he should be able to do mixups without being at disadvantage.
  3. Fierce DP should be at least as good as the equivalent for other characters (Sagat, Ryu, etc).
  4. I wouldn’t say buff his ultra; rather, everybody else should have their ultra damage nerfed to match his.

Also: I would really like his ST throw where he kicks the opponent in the stomach and they have to flip out. The mixup out of that was just really interesting to me.

Not C & P all these posts but you guys run into how many Kens online? I see 1 every other day. The online playing field is barren when it comes to Ken. Get up in G1 and you won’t see them. Sometimes I feel like the only one. Rarely lose to other Kens, sometimes a good one rears its head though.

I mean ppl dont understand how bad ken is designed(except for his kara throw and c.mk) since they dont main it

step kick is the most overrated normal in the game

Its also easy to make a comparision with ryu’s normals and shoryuken(s)

also…ken should win every “shoryuken war” especialy when you use the mk tatsu that put you @ 0

Hopefully they don’t improve him too much… We don’t want folks bitching about him like they did in 3s… Hell, it’s either gonna be complaining about flowcharts or complaining about low forward into whatever spam…

Man I’m kind of excited after reading that. I wonder if he means something entirely new that ken hasn’t had before or something new that they’re bringing back from an older iteration. Definitely gonna be interesting to find out.

I don’t play Ken, but I’d like to see a few more tweaks that further distinguish his style from Ryu’s.

It’s hard for me to think of specific details, but here’s my one suggestion:

I think it would be cool if Ken could combo off of his foward + hk overhead. Maybe give it plus 3 or plus 4 frame advantage on hit. It just fits with Ken’s cocky nature that he should be able to punish someone for getting too defensive against him. I don’t think this is overpowered as his hk overhead is used mainly as a surprise to catch people offgaurd and not as a staple move.

ken gets his roll. hell yeah. oh and his hair from alpha days.

As someone said:

Change the way his Ultra’s damage is given, make it 80% of it the Shinryuken and 20% the small shoryuken and the crazy kicks.

Give his Shoryuken the crazy priority of Ryu’s and make his mp shoryu not whiff on hit like in SSFTHDREMIX.

And for some stylish shit give him his mk from Third strike and his third strike haircut, he looked cool there.

I’d also would like him to have the low roundhouse from Third Strike instead of that bullshit merry go ride he has now, and a decent walking speed, he’s faster than Ryu dammit, how come he walks slower?

Anyway, that’s about it.

I would also make his hadoken even suckier, maybe like in the vs games where it vanishes before reaching the opponent.

In order to get the rushdown buffs we’re asking, I think they pretty much NEED to make his Hadoken worse. Right now, though it’s not the best, we can at least use it to make non fireballers come to us (like when we have a health lead or trying to make charge characters give up their charge).

His hadokens should all probably be about the range of Chun’s FP Kikoken. Maybe even a little LITTLE bit less. That way, it forces Ken to be a pure rushdown character, but it doesn’t take away the option of him using his hadoken as a poke in mid range footsies. Maybe the EX can go full screen or something…

I think Ono’s statement about additions wasn’t in regard to Ken in particular, I think he’s just saying that they aren’t adding any new mechanics like parrying or something of that sort.

Hopefully, since Ken got a specific mention, he’ll be getting the crazy kicks back. With the right frames, they could really help out his rushdown. Then again, who knows. I’m just hyped to see all the changes that are going to happen.

As it is now, target combo does 90 damage (less than a standing fierce), prorates damage as two moves instead of one (IE your ex tatsu does 80% instead of 100% damage) and whiffs at a stupid range.

All this to get something thats a few frames faster than his standing fierce? Bullshit.

co-sign. his target combo is useless in this game unless the opponent is dizzy. but if he is dizzy its much better to use s.hk since that takes much more damage.

Maybe Ken should have a faster focus. Anybody else feel the same?

I was hoping for a better air tatsu, let the normal hit more and ex maybe do some more damage or when you meet some in the air with the ex tatsu that it wouldnt knock them so far away
