Use of Consoles at Evo2k4

i agree

For Christ’s sake, no. :frowning: I still remember the aftermath.

Folks, be advised. That’s the WC turtle-the-timezone strat. They depend on your jet lag so when you’re all weary in your 6-7AM timezone they’re alright like if they just got out from a major club.

Watch out!

I’m curious about something, inkblot; how many machines/tv’s are you looking at for this year? I remember last year was about… 20 systems and TV’s? This is more for my curiosity then anything else.

Because it’s on console, will we be allowed to use regular controllers instead of sticks? Can you even use a regular controller for 3s on supernova?

one more thing. wouldn’t this also make it easier for fakers to claim their stick or buttons are broken? The arcade had a test mode. I’m assuming this is going to change some of the rules from last year when it came to reporting broken sticks.

for the third time, yes if the games are on ps2 and you want to use a pad and it works in the ports, you can, same goes for DC.

Number of setups this year, looking at 40-50.

A set of rules and judges will be overseeing matches to help us determine if someone is trying to fake a broken stick.

I had a feeling that something like this was bound to happen. When I saw this newsbit posted earlier in the afternoon, I didn’t know what to think of it. Now hours later and after much thinking, I still don’t know what to make of it overall.

Respected players have made some very valid points for and against this issue. I don’t see an easy answer to this one unfortunately. For me, BYOJ console matches are fine by me, but then again I don’t play MvC2. I hope that this thread can continue with some form of intellectual discussion from both parties and a decision everyone will be happy with can come out of it.

Some sort of a joystick checkin system would need to be developed. As Fubarduck mentioned, it would be an extreme pain in the ass to not only have to carry your stick for four days, but to constantly watch over it as well. There is always scumbag factor at large gatherings like this tournament.

My questions:

  • If a player does not have a stick, will one be provided by the tournament staff, or will the player have to beg someone from the sidelines to borrow one?

  • Will there be any converters provided for the tournament stations for players who own one specific stick type? For example, I own and maintain a Mas Stick that I use on my PS2/DC/PC. It is primarily a PS stick and I use converters (DC->PS and USB->PS) to get my gaming on with the primary gaming consoles. If I bring my stick and want to play in the CvS2 tournament (and I’m assuming it’ll be on Dreamcast) will I need to bring the converter to make it play on DC or will you guys provide one for me?

  • I’ve heard of people who have Mas sticks that have analog/digital switches for their joystick control. Would SRK enforce in some way that the player has to disable this “feature” on their stick to allow it for tournament play? The reason I mention this is because I’ve heard of many a console tourney where one play would mash out and accidentally hit the analog, rendering their character movement to a level of beyond-shitiness…

Good luck Cannons and SRK Staff… With vacation time coming up at the end of July, it might finally be the time that this east coaster makes the trip out to see what his skills would look like on the west side…

Fubarduck’s post is the truth! =]

As for last year, GGXX console tournament was awful.

We need to have bigger TVs on the floor…or maybe on a 1 1/2 to 2 ft. base.

Also, since everything is console, entry fees better be lower. There is NO WAY im gonna fly to Cali to play on console for 20 bucks a game and 10-15 registration. Isnt EVO about throwing a badass tourney with all the badass players? Or is it about profits? Ive been attending since B5 and i even wanted to goto B4. But if Evo sucks this year, count me out next time.

Last year’s Evo was the best tournament ive ever been to, and i hope it is even better this year.

More than likely one will be provided for them.

We are looking into this and seeing if we can get some converters.

We had several console rules last year, ie pausing, obviously we arent here to screw anyone, so we will have to look at the rules and see if we can come up with a viable solution.

Well, i just heard the news about Evo consoles from a friend at Poly.

I also heard (and i have not seen any threads to confirm this, so if it was posted, then sorry), that Evo will be held 1 week later than what the date is listed. I remember seeing that the date was tentative, but we just need confirmation to make sure people get the right weekend off from work and shit.

This is info coming straight from the people who run the Cal Poly Union where the tourny will be held.

This MVC2 thing about being in arcade because of “jerking” movements…ummmmm…

This plays into effect in EVERY arcade game. Not JUST MVC2. So all the MVC2 player that have problems with this, I can tell you old school players have problems uppercutting to the right and doing supers on wake ups without sticks moving, hence making the argument the same for that as well. This goes for any SF games out there, cvs2, st; etc

Like I said before. Concrete, 45 pds in a stand, have stick on the stand, eye level to TV. Bring Chair, perfec t solution, Stick will not move. I play as heavy as anyone out there, and the sticks don’t move when I have this setup…

Also, ANY NAOMI board for speed is slightly SLOWER than the console version on default speed.

ST on PlayStation and DC are both kind of sketchy, but 3do and saturn are the worst, hahahahahh

What about players who modified their sticks to have auto-fire??

My friend has done this and has a 100% mash out tempest rate not to mention a ton of extra damage just from mashing.

wont be allowed

I’m 100% cool with it. Now people cant complain about oh the sticks sucked or oh im so much better on my own personal joystick
blah blah blah
the only thing im wondering one of my friends asked was
What about accidental pauses?
How will that be taken care of?

I’m kinda surprised more people haven’t commented on the little speed differences that may or may not be seen by some players on the naomi console versions…

If you don’t feel like reading all of these posts…

…and you want to see some opinions from well-known OG respected players like Chris Li, Henry Cen, Viscant and others who haven’t yet posted…

I’ve made the site a forum for both sides of the argument. Go check it out.

All of you people complaining about consoles need to shut the hell up.

I think it’s hilarious how some of you people’s minds operate. When I ask for results from some of the biggest east coast tournaments, the entire state of New York tells me to shut up. When I suggest that Philly should try to stop randomly using tournament cabinets for practice matches and putting the tournament on hold for no reason, resulting in tournaments ending 6 hours late (or even the next day), everyone tells me to go to hell. When I suggest the possibility that some people in VA may want a single tournament without having the results decided and prizes taken by Arturo every time, I get ridiculed for weeks on SRK, including an entire s-kill column calling me an idiot on the front of the site.

But take these exact same people and ask them to play the exact same game on the exact same controls (except the screen and sticks are not part of a cabinet) and they turn into little whiny bitches. They’ll ignore all the benefits of using consoles are complain that the tournament is utterly ruined because now their controller might move a millimeter to the left when they spaz the joystick as hard as they can. This supposedly stops them from being able to win now, nevermind the fact they can’t beat the three other remaining local scrubs at the bowling alley. Because as we all know, all of these random tards were potential tournament champions and this alone is stopping them.

So tards, keep on complaining. Ignore the fact that consoles for more matches to be played. Ignore the fact that this saves a ton of money for Evolution (not that you’d give a crap if the Cannons lose a pile of money, but you’d complain even louder if you had to pay extra to enter). Forget the fact that most SF players these days actually play at home on consoles with sticks. Keep pretending that the supposed .0001% speed difference in CVS2 really affects your gameplay (as if retarded CVS2 gameplay matters anyway).

You’re doing a great job of making a fool out of yourself and entertaining the rest of us who laugh at your stupidity. If consoles are going to ruin your chances of winning at Evo, #1- you suck, and #2- Evo doesn’t need your dumb ass there if you can’t keep yourself from yanking out the plug or hitting the pause button.

If only SRK had just announced the positives (more freeplay, more games available for practice, more big screen games, option to use your own controls, tournaments progressing much faster, more time for extra stuff like team tournaments, etc.) and then wrote really small at the bottom MVC2, CVS2 will be on console you all would be all happy and excited about it. It’s like dealing with little 5 year olds. They hate everything that goes against what they want, but give them a cookie and they forget all about it.

This, of course, coming from somebody who has actually played SF within the past 4 years.

WHOOPS, I’m wrong. I’m sure you play MvC2 at top levels, right Joe?

Listening to Joe criticise MvC2 players for wanting stable controls is like listening to Bill Gates criticise NFL players for wanting tighter shoulderpads.

Chocobo…you don’t know what you’re talking about.

If you play K or P groove, there are some matches…very IMPORTANT matches where you’re required to just defend or parry every single hit just to be able to move. For example, K Yamazaki vs. A Sakura. Until you have a super, she can just do RC hurricane kick over and over and you literally can’t move unless you JD every hit of that. Try that at the arcade, then try that at home. If you can’t see the difference, you’re an idiot.

My solution is this.
Keep one or two arcade machines for each game for people to request to play on. If one person wants to play on arcade, then it goes to arcade, the recognized standard.

If everyone really is OK with console like you think, it shouldn’t a problem, should it?
Unless…you really are going to have 100+ people who will refuse to play on a system/speed that they’re unfamiliar with.

This is the worst possible solution for me.
One of the six characters I play in Marvel right now (Anakaris) flat out doesn’t work on console.
Also my main characters in CvS2 are the most timing depending JD characters in the game.

Without an option to play on arcade, I might as well just not enter CvS2, because I won’t even get to play.
