Use of Consoles at Evo2k4

All the people complaining about MvC2 being on console have a point.

I play MvC2 almost exclusively on console, and I still would prefer it if MvC2 at Evo was on arcade, but that’s not the issue here since it’s clear MvC2 is gonna be on console.

I think what needs to be adressed now is the fact that:

  1. Most (probably all) ppl do need the stick to have some sort of stability or else they can’t play at their full potential. I think this is very important.

  2. Some ppl a) like to sit down on a chair and play with the stick on their lap, while b) others like to play sitting on chair with the stick placed in front of them also on a chair/table and c) others like to play sitting on the floor so I think all options should be available. (TV placement for ppl who sit on the floor so they can see ect.)

  3. Hitting the analog botton by accident on a MAS stick does happen a lot in MvC2 when mashing, thus keeping you from moving, so I think it should be mandatory that ppl disconect it, it’s quite simple to do and won’t affect the stick in any way.

I actually expected someone to reply with something stupid like this, as I was writing the post. I really did consider putting something at the end like “let me make some stupid replies for you now, just so I can show you how dumb they are” but I was too lazy, and the post was already long enough.

Have you ever seen an NFL game on TV? Tell me, who exactly is it that announces the plays as they happen? Who analyzes the strategies used? Who coaches the teams to victory?

That’s right… former football players. It doesn’t mean a damn thing if John Madden or Boomer Esiason don’t play anymore, they still know how football works. Do you think some random NFL rookie can talk shit to Joe Montana the year after he retired and use the reason “he doesn’t play anymore so he must not know anything”? Hell no.

But nice attempt at trying to look intelligent, it almost worked. Well… no, actually it didn’t.

No offense to UCLA or anything, but anybody who was at the Red Octane challenge in Dec, probably remembers the problem with the entire cabinet moving while trying to play 3s, because i know i do
i had to literally put my foot on the damn thing to keep it from moving all over the place everytime somebody jerked, so YES moving joysticks to matter
also im mainly a 3s player and i would like to hear some criticisms (if any) that would affect the gameplay if it were switched over to console

Well, after talking with a few people about the ups and downs, i’m kinda starting to look at the good things that will come out of making it all console.

All free play, tournaments will run faster, way more casual play, you can make sure that you will be playing on a joystick you’re used to, no worries about not having enough machines, etc.

We have a little bit more than 4 months to, either, get used to a joystick and break it in, or mod a joystick to our own liking. It’s Nationals, so i think we should all try to make the best of it, and be positive about how we can make this year’s Evo as good, or better than last year’s.

This is a tutorial on how to modify a Saturn pad to use on a Supergun. You could similarly modify other pads.

ok. yes, the speed of the game is a factor as well. mvc2 for the dc would clearly be the best choice. but it is faster than the arcade version. making evo console doesnt neccessarily make evo better than last year’s. improvements will be shed on certain departments (saving time, more casual play, ect.). but when you come down to the importance of the tournament itself, it does not make things better. i am not going to buy a stick and dc just so i can get ready for evo. evo is already expensive enough as it is. im a broke ass college student with bills to pay, so even if i wanted to i couldnt. ive played on kp sticks. ive played on the arcade set up/home made sticks. ive played on them all. kp sticks have sement inside them i think, so its damn heavy. but it wont help my arm placement. i like to lean my arm. which cannot be done on mas or any regular made for home arcade sticks. and as for the arcade set up/home made sticks. something about them feel weak. they feel light. none of this matters tho. evo will lose a few people over this. thats it. everyone complaining about it will either convince themselves to think its not as bad as they think it is, or will go to evo complaining. once again, making it console does NOT improve anything from last year’s evo, except consuming time and more casual matches. but hey, that gives me an excuse to use when i lose. haha

Reasons for cabinents and not consoles:

- Not all sticks are created the same, and button changing will be very annoying.
- Not everyone will be used the versions being used for each game. (CvS2 DC is different from CvS2 PS2. There is dispute to which is closer to the arcade version)
- People can easily claim their stick wasn’t working in a match.
- Not only will Joysticks slide around but many sticks are not heavy enough and lift up. (Imagines someone doing Sakura’s A combo as the stick bounces off the floor.)
- Disconnections and pausing could occur and alter the match (saw that pretty often last year for GGXX) or even worse the players would have to restart the match.
- Mas sticks have analog buttons that disable the joystick if accidently hit.
- Height of the seat to the joysticks will be a problem for many players. Unlike consoles, cabinents give the option of sitting or standing. (I played GGXX on the floor last year, and I didn’t enjoy it, but it was hell of a lot better than sitting in a chair and playing on a table, for me at least.)
- Here is the biggest reason. People want a proffesional tournament, especially if they are travelling so far for it. It is just a different feel on cabinents than it is on consoles, that is why so many people go to arcades to play games and not just to someone’s house for console play. This console idea will discourage many to attending and they would rather spend their money some other way. A lot of top players have already expressed their discomfort with the whole console idea.

Hopefully this is a joke, or you guys reconsider the idea. It was a good thought but when it comes down to it, many people are against it.

console or cabinet doesnt matter as long as cvs2 is 2/3

no i dont trust you, TRUST ME put the damn joystick on a folding chair and hold it withur legs , your “friend” must be a freaking maniac, anyone able to uncontrolably move the joystick like taht must be a scrub that doesnt even need mention here, To me it seems like you are just complaining, so either you and ur imaginary friend, BUY A FOLDING CHAIR.

I dont like console simply comfort, the fact that you can never find a good position, and/or there is going to be lots of variance in sticks, too loose/tight, convex/concave ball/stick, perfect360/8way. Most arcades these days are perfect 360 with convex competition buttons.

If the sticks were fastened down to a height of a typical arcade where the stick wouldnt move at all, and the buttons and stick were good, i wouldnt mind one bit, but the chances of that are pretty bad i think. Contemplating even going this year now, it will depend on this situation for sure. :frowning:

Well, I think one of the main problems with console tournaments is that you lose that feeling when you’re playing in the arcade. Another thing that bothers me about EVO being console is the players. We all met players that suck in the arcade but on console they get everything out no matter how hard it is. This statement mostly goes to Mvc2 players, especially Magneto players. I can see many players losing to not so good players because they have almost perfect execution on console. This is more of a personal thing, but I’m sure many other players will agree with me on this.

*Fullmetal Daywalker *

if there better on console and there execution is flawless then why should they change?

obviously theres issues going to console, but you know, everyone is gonna have to get used to it. no matter how much you bitch and moan, arcades are going away, and consoles are growing. capcom dropped out of the US arcade scene. guilty gear still isnt really localized in the US yet and so on.

Evolution this year IS a REALITY CHECK.

this is not an april fools joke btw.

does anyone have anytype of clue how difficult and expensive it is for the cannons to get all those freaking cabinets for evolution? or trying to gather all the arcade boards? they have to borrow, rent, or what have you, from other arcades and drive them over. its such a major hassle. and then there’s resources, or options on where to acquire these cabinets. do people realize that resources for that is very low too? the average arcade has only one of those deluxe cabinets that everyone is accustomed to. this isnt like the other other big nationals that have a 100man average that can be ran on a couple cabinets, this is evolution with around 1000 people roughly. it grows every year, while the arcades shrink every year. bad combo, but once again, this is a REALITY CHECK. no one wants to play on consoles, but unfortunately, thats where its heading in the US. it sucks ass but there is no choice.

namco players are used to it. they deal with it for better or worse. hell, they got a really shitty port of ttt for ps2 and its standard, i just think the capcom community is way too fucking picky and are too lazy to adjust. plus the fact that there are WAY more console players than arcade players.

i do agree with a lot of the complaints tho, but even if it was arcade, people still bitch anyway. so whats the point? its always a lose/lose situation cuz no one is ever happy. be happy that people take time out of their lives and money out of their pockets for you guys.

all i can say is just get used to it, cuz this is the future of fighters in the US, and you are ignorant if you think otherwise.

Yes, console is the future of fighters.

NEW fighters. That are released in the FUTURE.

Not games that have been out for 5 years and were mastered on arcade cabs. That you can’t play at top levels on console due to control issues.

Any new games from here on out, will be played on console. But forcing top players who have only played on arcade seriously to switch over to console, for what is supposed to be the biggest and most professional tournament for SF players…

…need I finish?

Forcing Marvel players to play on console is like forcing Americans to go to Japan and play on Jap sticks. In fact, we may as well just do that. We’re fucked either way.

Consoles take away from the old-school feel of arcades and make the tournament look more of a european style.

Not that it’s a bad thing… but for those of us who are used to cabinets MWC looks like a better choice.

I say raise the price of entry 10 bucks and use cabinets

makes for a more surprising evo , but sabre put it as best as it can be described in 1 post…

quick question

I have a sav sitdown table to play my console games and im sure others have some sort of sitdown table, its pretty sturdy. will those be allowed at evo? I had it in my hotel room last year, but if it could be taken into and used at evo, that would be kool, just wanted to know
