Use of Consoles at Evo2k4

I duct tape my X-arcade stick to a wooden coffee table and it’s arcade perfect. No sliding around. No nothing. I play CVS2 by the way. fuck marvel

even turtlers in Marvel gotta jerk the stick when they runaway, do an AHVB, mash, or unfly. Marvel players are beasts. You need something bigger than a pussy console stick to hold them down.

Yeah Dc = errors = really really bad… heh if it is on console to save time, it may be more trouble at end with a lot of random pauses or freezes or moving or because of arm placement.

Marvel players are beasts!!!

Too bad the PS2 version looks like shit.

A lot of people have thrown their hat into the ring here, and I think I should too. As a former tournament organizer, I know the problems that come along with consoles. So here’s what I feel is not going to work at EVO:

No matter what game you’re playing, no matter what console, when you force people to bring their own sticks, you have problems. And here’s why:

  1. A lot of players who are into certain games…namely the CvS2 and MvC2 crowds…do not play those games on console on a consistent basis. The majority of the “top-players” in these games learned them in arcades. In fact, unlike a lot of games like SC2, Tekken, GGXX, and others, these games are played primarily in arcades, because they actually make money; it’s easy to find them in arcades, unlike the other games.

Switching over to a console is basically going to leave the majority of educated players, who learned these games in arcades, at a disadvantage, being used to playing on an arcade-level cabinet that is stationary. By switching these two particular games over to console, you are actually giving an unfair advantage to those who have played the games seriously on this format before, while handicapping a lot of America’s top players who refuse to play on console.

  1. Going along with the above, not all players own their own console sticks. I’ve been playing MvC2 since the day the japanese copy was released, but I never owned a console stick until a month or so ago…and it’s a shitty agetec. But that’s just an example.

You’re going to have a significant number of players coming to EVO that do not own their own sticks, or do not feel confident playing on them in a tournament. So you’re going to need a LOT of loaners unless you want to see hundreds of DQs, or lots of delays.

Another problem comes up if someone enters multiple tournaments. Should someone be expected to bring a DC stick for Capcom games, and then a PS2 stick for GGXX and 3d games? That’s a lot of baggage to be carrying around, and I really doubt it’s going to work out if everybody is walking around with a joystick.

  1. Maintaining who’s stick is whose is going to be a fucking nightmare. Trust me on this one. Shit is going to get stolen like crazy, and you’re going to have no way to prove anything, or kick anybody out who you catch UNLESS you hire some hardcore security.

  2. If a stick/button breaks on an arcade cab, you can fix it in seconds. If one breaks on a console stick…especially during a serious tournament like EVO where they will be played on more and harder than ever before…it’s going to be another nightmare to get them fixed. Some sticks like Agetecs can’t have their switches replaced, and some of these kids won’t have a clue what to do to fix the stick. That’s an auto DQ simply because of a stick malfunction, and it will cause a lot of controversy and complaints.

  3. It’s pretty much accepted that when you combine certain sticks, namely an Agetec with a MAS stick, you can have some serious probs with burning out controller ports, or random pauses, on a DC. There is nothing at all you can do to remedy this situation. You’re just going to have to tell one or the other player that they can’t play on their favorite stick, and that’s just not fair. Or else you’re going to have to replace the ports on numerous DCs, and figure out how to deal with random pauses.

  4. This is pretty much MvC2-specific, but considering that (ignoring Smash Brothers…) MvC2 will be the biggest numbers draw of any game at EVO…

MvC2 is a game that absolutely demands a sturdy, steady base to play on. Marvel is the most control-invensive fighting game ever created…pressing down, then up hard on a stick, jerking down-forward while smashing two punches together, then pressing several more buttons…fast flying with sent…and lot of of other stuff just REQUIRES stationary controls.

There is no way to get around this. I’ve tried to emulate playing on an arcade cab at home in numerous ways…including strapping down a joystick to a chair and trying to get it to stay still…and the ONLY way to get this to work is to physically glue something down. Which won’t be feasible at EVO.

Having MvC2 on console at EVO benefits no one. Nobody is going to care that there is more time for casual play if they can’t do anything in the tourney, simply because of controls. If you want to have a casual play section for MvC2, then make it separate, and make it console. But the tournament should absolutely be played on arcade cabinets, 100% of the time…not just finals.

If anyone disagrees with this, I guarantee you either 1. have played MvC2 on console from day 1, and so are either used to playing on your own personal stick, or simply don’t do advanced tactics like fast fly, or 2. you are biased because you either don’t like MvC2, or don’t play it.

I look forward to discussing this topic further.

Since it is going to be all consoles this year, let’s try to do the best to accommodate all players as best as we can. Like most players who primarily play in arcades, we are used to the arcade cabinet feel. So it is necessary that the joystick be stable and not move while I play. To get this setup with a home stick, the only way to really do it without any special equipment (SF players are poor) is to sit on the floor and hold the joystick in place with your legs to keep it from moving. Many players play at home in this fashion. Its a workable solution.

The problem is Evo2k3 didnt really accommodate this style of play very well. The console setups generally had TVs on the back of tables so players could sit on chairs and place their sticks on the table. It is really hard to play with a MAS stick on a table if you play aggressively and the stick is moving on your constantly. So the only choice is to play on the floor. How it was set up last year, the TV was too far back. From the floor you had to look up at an inconvenient angle, and the front of the table obstructed your view of the TV.

If some optimal setup can be arranged where some people can play on the floor and some can place their stick on some sort of stand, and also placing the TV unobstructed at a height that isnt at a disadvantage to either player, then I think most people can be happy with the arrangement. This all sounds kind of silly, but a lot of players who play on consoles do sit on the floor and are used to this. Everyone is going to have their own preferred sitting situation with their stick, so providing a setup flexible to accommodate a wide variety of players is essential to making Evo2k4 run smoothly.

yes there is just replace the resistor i thought everyone knew this but i guess no one does there’s even a FAQ on gamefaqs how to do it. really easy takes like 5 minutes if you know what you’re doing

Since, i’m assuming, Evolution is for the players, why don’t you guys at least run a poll and let everyone vote between console and arcade? I’d really hate to not participate in the Street Fighter Nationals :frowning:

So we’re going to do complex technical surgery on every DC that will be used at EVO??? How long will that take, and who will volunteer to have their DC opened?

It’s only a 2 wire solder is that really that complicated? I’ll bring my DC’s if you want but I only got 2. If you get a couple people working on it could fix like 15 DC’s in one hour easily.

Well I built my own stick, and stability is not an issue cause i didnt build it like a piece of shit. As long as the stick isnt the size of a shoe box and you sit on the ground with it, its not gonna move, so no one should complain about stability. More like do a better job building your stick.

The only issue is the “Insert Controller” thing. That happens a lot at random, even with MAS sticks. Remember the NEC finals ??

I think thats the only real issue at hand and something should be stated about what happens if a stick shorts out.

edit:

I read some of what Phil wrote and I agree with what he says about MvC2. Have MvC2 on cabinets at least. . . if people wanna play casual on console, they can go to their hotel. But whatever, half the people complaining probably wont even make it.

Ok, I felt a need to post something here…

SInce ALL of you are complaining about this, take this into consideration. PERSONALLY, I like this on console. Why? There are more players that play console games. Second of all, the MAJORITY of you in the past 3-4 years have become accustomed to these bs WICO/HAPP 360 sticks. You know, the sticks that make motions a cinch but instant blocking and better charge moves IMPOSSIBLE.

What does this mean? It means the people that have kind of been “shunned” by this new breed of 360 salivating freaks can use pads, console; etc. It’s even score. This is one tournament that has console only. If the hardcore people do not go, they can still go to ECC or MWC, those are mostly Arcade anyway.

I just think it is ironic that everyone wants to be/play like Japan, yet they don’t seem to realize we are the only country that uses 360 sticks in arcade cabinets as the majority due to one arcade, and people insisting on them because the styles of the games went to motions and not blocking and charging obsessively…

JAPAN uses switch sticks. I don’t want to hear the range of motion argument, blah blah, you can still find corners, and charge fast without “thinking” like you have to do sometimes on a 360. It is not “guessing” like it is on a 360. So yes, I for one am happy I get to play using a Competition or Ultimate joystick.

I don’t like console playing much because, well, yes, the joysticks DO move…my suggestion? LOts of concrete (KP sticks are REALLY GOOD for this) or a stick with a STAND or base…I will be bringing one that is basically 100% arcade perfect, no movement, concrete in the stand, you will flip when you see it…but I am just posting all of this because I think it is in SRKS’ best interest for the community for console, much easier to deal with, much QUICKER to end for tourney times. =)

I quoted the whole post because anyone that didnt read what he said or already did…read it again, he is speaking the truth.

Hmm that sounds really good. Do you have any pictures of this? I think some of us with a heavy hand, who have a hard tiime on console, would be interested in making something like this. Let me know how you did it or how we can do it. thanks.

every arcade has shitty/broken sticks in america, this is good, bring 100 agetecs

consoles are ok i guess…but is there any way u guys could get Killer Instinct on the superguns, that be cool:cool:

Mvc2 should be played on arcade primarily because of the issue of moving sticks. Moving sticks are a big problem for mvc2 players, which can be easily solved with a) cabinets or b) some sort of contraption which restricts the sticks from moving. There were suggestions for a couple of ways which sticks could be held down. I don’t think these are bad ideas, but the sticks are still more susceptible to move if they were tied to a table versus a cabinet. One thing being misunderstood by others is that main issue for the majority of mvc2 players is NOT the compatibility of the game between the arcade and the dc, but the inadequacy of players performing as best as they could PRIMARILY due to the excessive movement of sticks. Mvc2 is a game where sticks naturally move and it does hinder the performance of players. Cabinets solve this problem. I think that the coordinators should really take this into consideration. In addition, there are very credible mvc2 players(Xecutioner, Soomighty, Potter) who have spoken out stating this issue being one of the main problems with consoles. In effect players’ abilities would be hindered primarily because they don’t have the ability to jerk the sticks while playing. Jerking is a MAJOR part of succeeding in MvC2. LOL. I do understand the fact that the coordinators are trying to do something different this year which is great. However, if there is a change such as this i think that there should have been a regional or some other big tourney where a good amount of players from different areas attend to use as an experimental run for consoles tourneys. Feedback and tourney attendance would be a great help. It is too drastic of a change at the moment. Maybe if the players knew earlier that the tourney this year was going to be a console tourney, they could have practiced more on consoles. I honestly think its too early, but if its set, then its set. I wouldn’t be surprised if people complain about losing early in brackets due to sticks.
As for cvs2 I do think that it was a very good idea to changing the format from a single game to two out of three. Hopefully you find this a little more constructive than other posts.

Is there any way that A3 could be run in this exact same way?

The unknown poster is right, he does have a point.

I think its been set that this tourney will be console doesnt really matter what points you make if its set at console thats what its gona be i completly agree being a mvc2/ggxx player.
