havin’ a cabinet for only the finals wouldnt be too bad, would it?
Actually, if I remember correctly, GGXX was on console last year. As was SC2, T4, TTT, and VF:Evo. As far as I can tell, all of them went off fine.
Putting this tournament on console will not kill the arcade scene. Minor tournaments and hubs of competition across the country have been in arcades for years, even after arcade perfect console ports became common. I doubt the format of this tournament will change that.

Dont be mad if im losing a marvel match and i accidently mash to the point of an amazing restart of the DC.
I sure would be pissed if i got DQ’d for that.
replay that shit for life, but if i do it, it was an accident too.
Are controllers an option if you dont want to use a stick?
example: can i use a dc controller on cvs2 for dc?
also will custom soundtracks be used for the tourny? like a custom remix of mvc2 =D ill donate one or two for the tournys so we can get rid of the funky jazz. and replace it with metal/rock.
Dear Cannon Bros and Wizard,
As you might recall, I had a long list of dissatisfactions just with GGXX being run on console last year. It’s understandable now that console is the way you have to do everything, but let me express to you the main problems that I believe need to be addressed that were not addressed at Evo 2K3. Console just might work if a few major problems are addressed.

There needs to be some kind of security measure / locker / check-in facility for other people’s sticks. I thought it would be a huge hassle to bring a stick on the airplane with me to the tournament, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be–the stick came with me in my carry-on bag and everything else stayed in my full-sized luggage. It was, however, EXTREMELY exhausting to carry my stick with me in a bag on my shoulder AND keep an eye on it ALL DAY LONG FOR THREE DAYS.

Allowing other people to use their sticks opens up a number of problems with compatibility on various systems. My sticks are now properly set up so that they will 99% not mess up in the middle of a game, but who knows, they might randomly disagree with a certain PS2’s joystick port. I honestly cannot think of any fair way to set rules for this, so my suggestion is to decide on a set of rules for this as soon as possible and announce them on the Evolution Web site so that there will be no disputes come tournament time. Also, prepare to have a lot of dead DC’s after people blow the controller ports with their ghetto contraptions. It might be a good idea to have someone on staff for the specific purpose of soldering a new capacitor to fix a broken DC, or maybe you guys should have extra consoles ready “just in case”.

This is probably the most important suggestion ever–it’s easy to enforce and it will prevent a lot of grief. This is a serious tournament, and a lot of players will be very nervous. THEREFORE, THERE SHOULD BE A LONG-DISTANCE SEPERATION BETWEEN THOSE PLAYING TOURNAMENT MATCHES AND THOSE WATCHING. When I played my GGXX console matches last year, I could literally feel people breathing on me, not to mention talking about my match and whatever mistakes I made IN THE MIDDLE OF MY GAMES. Put blockers 10 to 20 feet BEHIND THOSE PLAYING TOURNAMENT MATCHES. Allow only the tournament organizers, along with one person to record (if both players consent) to cross the blockers. SF players need a lot of breathing room when they’re playing seriously, forrealz.

Lastly is a problem I’m not sure if you are both aware of. Just how do you plan on making PS2 to Supergun adapters? Remember that PS2 controllers are codified and a Supergun’s DB15 ports are binary. Going binary to codified it not a problem, but going codified to binary or codified to codified IS a problem. The only way you can do codified to binary that I’m aware of is to custom-build and program an IC for it, which is beyond my level of joystick knowledge. You’d have to have some good engineer buddies make them, I think.
Additionally, since you’re going the Supergun route, which DB15 Pinout schema will you be using? A lot of Supergun builders prefer the Neo-Geo standard pinout, but the Super Novas (which are probably the most common Supergun) use a different pinout altogether. You also have to consider that it will be pretty much impossible to provide PS2–>Supergun adapters with full compatibility (provided you guys procure them) since some PS2 sticks wire R1 for Fierce and R2 for Roundhouse while others wire L1 for Fierce and R1 for Roundhouse to ensure PSX–>Dreamcast adapter compatibility. You’ll run into even more problems if some if your Superguns have the Neo Geo pinout while others have the Super Nova pinout!
As for me, my sticks have DB15 ports built in just for Supergun compatibility. They are wired to support the Super Nova pinout, so I can just wire DB15 cables straight to any Super Nova and start playing. If you decide to go the Neo-Geo pinout though, I can just modify some different DB15 cables to ensure compatibility with that–I definitely trust using my sticks DB15 to DB15 over an adapter that might not even pan out considering the difficulty.
So, please, Cannons and Wizard, take these suggestions into dear consideration from an out of state player who has attended the last two Evo’s. I know you guys can make this one great.
And one, final thing, WTF is up with all the MVC2 whiners? Gawd, do you guys want a bottle to go along with your cabinets? 3rd Strike is unplayable on Dreamcast so it HAS to be played through arcade boards . . . but Dreamcast MVC2 is perfect. You don’t see any of the CVS2 players blowing their load about how they won’t be able to properly do Bison customs without a cabinet to restrain them–I promise that you guys can still do short, short Psylocke on a joystick in between your legs or on a level table.
what is the real reason behind the switch ink?
is it really only for the issues u listed in the first post alone?
Amen to that Fubar, amen to that.
JP
i havent read to much on this thread but all i have is a ps2 x-arcade joystick…so if all this shit is run on DC then will i have to use a joy provided or can you guys like work around this problem cuz i dont think im the only one with this problem
My biggest gripe about putting this on console has already been mentioned: the fact that the sticks are going to move a lot especially with marvel. You have fast flyers, tri jumps, super jumps, TKers, and mashers. Unless you guys find a way to pin the control to a table or something, I’d be totally against console.
Read Kaisingrz post. its the answer to your life.
yuppppppppppppppppp fast flying is over on sticks shit is gona fly =\
thank you, sir
edit: in the end, you guys are only “marvel players”. sorry :X
I dunno what’s more the truth, kaising’s s/d or his post
exactly. When was the last time you saw someone accidently throw their stick across the room tryin to roll cancel or do a dust loop? Hell, the boys of the EC made this pretty clear in the NEC videos when they showed what happened to Desmond’s mas stick after pulling some fast fly combos in his match vs. Wigfall. The base got fucked up. Marvel is a game that just has a type of intensity that can’t be fully contained on console.
Are the sticks going to be checked??
My friend’s stick is on automatic auto-fire that he can mash out of tempest 100% of the time.
haha, i can’t believe so many people believe this. Evolution last year, was the best to date and just about everyone was happy. No way that they’re gonna change 3S, MvC2, ST and CvS2 to console. The only reason XX was on console, was because there aren’t enough Guilty Gear arcade machines in the U.S.
Good early April Fool’s day joke tho. Caught everyone off guard.
let’s just hope this is a joke
“. . but Dreamcast MVC2 is perfect”
I’ve played pretty much nothing but console mvc2 for tourneys here in the south and…
I’m pretty damn sure it’s actually faster than the arcade, can anyone confirm this?
Also, mvc2 is totally different than other games because of the speed you have to hit buttons, that stick is GOING to move around unless it’s held down. A stompfest with sentinel versus somone walking around poking, linking or even painting is totally different…
Hey can we bring our own arcade cabinets too?
If its ok with you guys (cannons/wizard/evo dudes) I can ask my boss to rent out a few cabinets at evo2k4 for MvC2 and 3s…I was thinking maybe we can bring our head to head cabinets there?
Just a thought
