Warning: diatribe coming:
I lol’d
I have mixed feelings about this. I literally grew up in the Anderson Mall arcade (as did Kevin, and Ted to some extent), yet I accepted a long time ago that there was no future for arcade gaming. I tried to convince Jordan to get rid of all his arcade equipment long, long ago b/c there was just no point anymore (and it’s going to get harder to get parts, and generally just harder to FIND PEOPLE to PLAY on machines) - this is where Jordan/Ted/Larry and I have never seen i2i. I feel like we all have to move on, although I enjoy playing on arcade machines just as much as everyone, if not more.
Now that being said, there’s always been a “go-to” game in the arcade culture - it was generally whatever was the newest at the time. Some people (like yourself ;p) just didn’t choose to play them, but for me, the day that Street Fighter EX2 showed up was just as exciting as the day that Beastorizer showed up (at least for about 10 minutes in the case of the latter), and THAT was what kept us all traveling around.
And if we didn’t get it at Jolly Time/Pocket Change/Outer Limits, we DROVE TO IT:
Closest SFEX2+ machine? North Dekalb Mall, I believe.
Ehrgeiz? The Petro station on north 85 between the SC border and the Athens exit.
UMK3, when it first came out? We drove to a movie theater on 123 in Seneca to play that beta. DAILY!!!
And my personal favorite? BloodStorm - closest machine (2 of them), Six Flags over Georgia. Yes, I paid the admission - twice.
I remember when Charlotte used to get beta tests all the time, and it seemed like it was nothing to road trip out there a few weekends a month. The thing about it all now is that the “newer” gamers have the luxury of picking up a new game without even leaving the house in some cases, so they have more time to play and they wear these games out so fast that there always needs to be a new “go-to” game to keep their interests, instead of a new “go-to” game to get excited about. Our culture (sadly) died long ago, and P2P became HCI practically overnight.
All that aside, I agree with you - I think that both versions are going to be good, my main concern is that for once the market might actually get flooded kind of like the GH/RB market got hella flooded last year, and people will play one or the other and not both. I suppose as long as the companies keep putting out fighting games (see new MK), then people like us will still keep playing them.
As far as MLG goes, my opinion might be unjustified - it seems like there was some scandal involving them not paying out prize money a few years back, but I may have that confused with something else. That’s what old age will do to you.
Speaking of old guys, Ted and I on an MK tag team = undefeat-able. Bet it
Oh, and we’re having a boy in case anyone cares/didn’t see my fb.
