Updated SSF4 Akuma Matchup Thread (2011)

this was probably already known by most, but it’s really nice from you to go look around and keep the thread updated! Good work!

its beatable if its right on his skull.
unless hes REALLY good at timing it and gets the shoulder bash of the lariat off, but like always vary the timing i guess?

Some general matchup information from the Capcom blog VS Yun and Yang:

Credit for the Blog translation goes to ‘USD’ on Neogaf.

While playing AE lately I’ve noticed many people stuffing their dive kicks with fs.lk and cs.lp (Ryu and Dhalsim). I don’t have the balls to do this as a bad guess = 1/4 of my health but I’m going to start applying Capcom’s advice to see what kind of mileage I can get from it.

The dive kicks are insanely effective but evidently are quite manageable to stop provided you develop some familiarity with when to plug in a standing normal.

It’s easier to apply with Ryu because his normals on average have 3+ active frames where-as Akuma normals are 2s virtually across the board. (Ryu far LK active 6 frames against Akuma’s 2)

Quick and simple question: If done right Demon Flip Grab should grab Dhalsim on his wake up before he can slide out of it, right?

I play this matchup a lot. This is extremely difficult to do if you are trying to intentionally grab before he performs a wake-up slide.

Additionally, Sim can perform wake-up EX upflame to really ruin your day. Go for other options (cross-over palm whiff is really good VS Sim) or at least mix your approach up enough so that you can snatch a flip grab on his wake-up every blue moon. That is, train him to be wary about sliding or performing anything on wake-up so that you can land the odd flip grab for free.

  • Second hit of fs.hk whiffs on E. Ryu just like on regular Ryu on block
  • lk tatsu > sweep doesn’t appear possible

Here are some more nuggets of info from other character threads (I didn’t find much of interest in the Chun Li thread, that matchup seems to boil down to fundamentals and knowing when Chun has down charge for EX SBK)
Cody
-Cody is at frame disadvantage [-3] on hit when his overhead attacks connects on a crouching opponent - if Cody is close enough, this should leave time for a st. LP or cr. LP into sweep/combo.
-Teleport is a good defensive wakeup option until Cody has U2 loaded
-EX Criminal Upper is throw invincible

Dan
-Dan’s LK Knee can cross up Akuma at close range, if Akuma is crouching
-AA Demon only works if Dan has already thrown out a move in the air - otherwise he can change his direction with LK Knee
-Dan’s knees are not really punishable - MK/HK are only -2 on block, and LK actually gives him frame advantage, depending on where it hits.

Man, this sucks. Out of 4 characters, we cannot neither Tatsu, sweep nor safely st.HK 3 of them.

And we don’t know about Oni yet… Hopefully he’s like Gouken…

How can you punish a -2 move with a 3 frame startup jab?

codys overhead is -3 on hit vs croucher

From Tokido’s blog:

Sounds scary… Do you think Yun might be that bad of a matchup?

Without a FADC’able Reversal it didn’t look that bad to me, but no Tatsu into Sweep, st.HK, huge damage potential and ways to punish teleports sure make things harder.

Fighting sim makes me want to throw something at the screen. Such a lame ass character wow.

Patience grasshoper. Patience.

Patience keeps me at one end of the screen and him at the other, exactly where he wants to be and where i dont :frowning:

What’s up? you got access to those characters in Sydney?

He probably does, i’ve seen quite a few videos from australian players on youtube and they were playing oni and e.ryu

Yep.

Any impressions on the Evil Ryu match-up? Obviously it will be similar to the Ryu match but with some major differences.

They have the same life for one thing. Vortex will be a little more weird with him having great Shoryus (including jab) and a teleport to deal with.

Any idea of what his Shaku is like compared to Akumas? start-up, damage, recovery?

If it’s not too sick, EX Flip should see Akuma have a good control of the fireball game. I’d guess Akuma would have an upper hand in footsies too. Is E.Ryu low forward difficult at all to deal with?

Considering Akuma cannot tatsu~sweep E.Ryu, I’d hope E.Ryu can’t tatsu~sweep Akuma.

i think it will just be similar to an akuma mirror, except with a ryu ultra lol.
