Updated SSF4 Akuma Matchup Thread (2011)

Slides: Each character will behave differently after slides. You can somewhat compare Rose’s slide to Dhalsim’s. If you have meter, against 99% of the opponent you can go for a Hp Srk if he slides too close. Most characters will try to grab you after a slide and this will make them stop. You can see tokido doing this in a whole lot of matches, sometimes it even punishes the slide for real, like Ibuki`s. But, even when it doesn’t, if you have meter go for it.

Now, if you’re not doing this, you’ll have to go for a late tech. I guess almost all of your other options, specially normals, will be thrown by their throw attempt, so don’t try to counter it without a invulnerable special that can be canceled, like the srk, or just tech it.

Blanka is another story. AE will change this as far as i’m concerned, but the major problem is that you have to either block a ball (or guess if he’s going for a stop/throw setup) or you have to block a slide. I usually stay inside the range of the slide and then i walk backwards to get out of it. Also, you can throw some fast focuses and backdash to make the Blanka player see that you’re aware of this play. Be careful because all of this aren’t go to strategies, they have to be used according to the situation you’re playing.

Against Blanka, SPECIALLY ONLINE, you have to play safe almost all of the time. Punish his jump-ins mostly with c.hp, be aware of his hop shenanigans, they are usually unblockable online against most of the connections. Blanka is one of the, if not THE, worst characters to face online.

my blanka opponent do not use ball at all… and ae blanka is buffed not nerfed. its nerfed for the scrubs who spams heavy ball only.

he only tries to play footsie with c.mp,s.hp,c.hk,slp, couple of hops in between get a slide. then start attacking with crossup lp, electricity+hop shenanigans.

the slide is very hard to punish in ae btw…very hard…

Does anyone know what the general consensus is in Japan on what the Akuma vs Yun and Yang match ups are?

Are we looking at having to counter pick here, or is it manageable like SSF4 Akuma vs Cammy?

Oyajy, i wasn’t implying any buffs or nerfs for Blanka on Ae. I’m just saying that the Slide/ball game will be a little easier to deal with due to the Ball recovery.

A while ago, Gamogo reported having a lot of problems with this matchup and i remember tokido saying the same thing. But that was a while back, maybe they’ve found out new stuff now. But yun and yang in general are very strong characters, and i think they only have a hard time with grapplers.

no its harder to deal with…only easier to deal against scrubs.

From what I have gathered they are at the advantage but it can managed.

Seeing how much tokido was complaining about Yun I think it might be worse than cammy (her slower wake up time opens her up for a lot of setups and her dp is mad unsafe on block/whiff while yun will often end unpunished or at least not punished as bad as cammy). Yang seems more manageable tho (since he does less damage)

i was wondering at superlollo and shinakuma204 sounds like you guys doesn’t frequent arcade much? or u guys just play console?

No arcades with SF4/SSF4/AE in Italy. Yeah it sucks. The few arcades we have here got old shit like House of the Dead, Sega Rally and Dayton USA. No wonder they’re a a dead business

Plus the fact that you cant tatsu sweep the twins.

There are only two places in Canada with AE, and I’m not close to either.

Tokido has developed many setups that don’t require tatsu/sweep. You can still pressure without it.

Ok guys,

i’m really matchup dependant. I can’t play a generally solid gameplay against characters that i don’t know. Recently i’ve been practicing the Fei matchup because i’m being able to face some decent fei longs here in Brazil.

Against Fei Long, Tokido uses a lot of straight and backward jumps. He mixes them up with falling straight mk’s and late air fireballs. If the Fei Long player knows you’re going for a fb, he can instant rekka and it will punish you if he does it correctly. But, if he guesses wrong and throws out a rekka when you are coming down with a mk, should the mk hit the random rekka and punish him, should it trade, or is fei long able to block?

you should hit him with mk and do c.mp xx lk tatsu or c.mk xx hk tatsu depending on the distance

You serious? Cause I get THawk/Adon DPed (I jump in less on Adon than THawk) on their wake-ups like 98% of the time regardless of how quickly I try to demon flip etc. Weird.

Ok, thanks for the info regardless.

There is more that goes into a safe jump than just the reversal speed. Wake up speed goes a long ways.

For T-Hawk I never had a problem, but Adon will always wake up faster than you can safe palm.

The worst offenders imho, matches, are Rose, Sim, Guy, and Ibuki - in that order. Their throws off the slide is just ridiculous - seems to have priority over everything except tech. I get thrown like 90% of the time by these chars. The other slide chars like Blanka - unless I’ve been fighting some really crappy ones - can be more safely anticipated, blocked, and punished.

And against Seth, I am still trying to figure out this matchup (it’s probably one of my worst along with Balrog and Bison though I am getting better at these), especially against running, jumping, and teleporting ones. I cannot seem to close in without getting DPed, grabbed, or comboed somehow.

Akuma has better walkspeed then seth, just walk forward at his face,Sure u will eat a far hp once or twice but this is the trick, bait a hp and then jump hk stand hk combo for huge damage this will stop the far hp spam, seth has no answer for akumas far hk besides neutral jump,i beleive this is the type of match in which a knock down is really crucial teleports can be punishable by walk forward sweep or far hk,Akuma’s teleport are also punishable by os teleport of seth,Seth has to take risk alot,Spd,Sonic booms,Tandem Engines and far hp is a risk too at less then full screen range imo.Learn to bait the ultra and punish it hard,u can hold up forward or teleport through the wave to punish it.Take a life lead and let him come to you,Getting a knock down is very important as both can stun very quickly, seth has insane mixups but all of them are risky.

Ibuki? Her slide is one of the worst in the game. It can be like -5 on hit and -10 on block. It is extremely hard to make it safe to the point where most players just use it to get under fireballs.

It doesnt sound to me like you guys have been playing much AE. Let me tell you the Yun match up is VERY difficult. Im up here in seattle where we have some good players and 8 cabs throughout 2 arcades. First of all, forget the vortex lol. You cannot DF grab them… they are too small, (Its not impossible but timing is extremely difficult and if they do anything it whiffs), you cannot DF kick loses to reversal at EVERY angle(if you are angled and it whiffs its a free escape for the Yun), you cannot teleport(Rush punch and ultra both easily punish teleport). Zoning Yun is very difficult since he has an Ultra that punishes fireballs at a reasonable range and also has divekicks and a free safe get in. Think of the Yun matchup as facing a Rufus which is 1/2 the size, has a reversal that beats all your vortex options (Except safe jumps of course), has a free SAFE get in(EX rush punch), and has A FUCKEN COMMAND GRAB. I would say 6.5/3.5 in yuns favor maybe a 6/4 at best.
