UPDATED "I don't even need my sword for such an easy fight" - UMvC3 Zero Matchup Thread

I am FREE to Taskmaster now. I used to get blown up but win every once in a while by airdashing —> command dash m/h —>j.H, but my friend just blew that up about a billion times with arrows now that you can’t block during airdash. Any ideas people?

ZERO IS A GOD!

This match-up is really difficult against a patient Taskmaster player.

  • Stay above Taskmaster, but don’t air dash. He can’t compete with your air mobility
  • Do everything you can to bait stupid Legion Arrow supers.
    • If you 3 stocks throw Busters and Hadangekis on the ground, if he tries to blow through them, reaction punish with Genmu Zero.
    • w/ a fully charged buster, don’t be afraid to do a few random Sentsuizan when you’re above him. Now in UMvC3 if he tries to punish with certain moves or his
counter super just cancel your descent with a buster. Voila, wasted meter.
  • Respect his normals, they’re just as good as yours. Don’t push block any crouching light. It’s probably a frame trap and he’ll probably blow your ass up.
  • If you score a combo. Kill him. 3 meters, 4 meters, whatever. Get rid of him.

Thanks a lot for the advice!

Strider Y should be abusable since Tasky can’t Up arrow when in the air. Arrow super may be too slow to punish except on prediction.

I usually just try to buster frustrate and setup ground mixups. Zero cannot challenge tasky normals in the air, though the dive buster trick may change that.

Don’t neglect tagging out if you feel its a bad matchup. I often tag team Zero/Doom on tasky.

Taskmaster isn’t a good match for Zero IMO, shield skills and legion arrows rips the shreds out of zero. If you can avoid it, i would recommend switching to a different character.

Also, i haven’t had the chance to pick up Ultimate yet, so does anyone have any idea how Zero fares against Ghost Rider or Hawkeye?

Ghost Rider is pretty free IMO. He loses to Buster at full screen and has no answer for Zero rushdown. Only way he stands a chance is if you get cornered and he gets to midscreen. Don’t let that happen and you’re good.

EDIT: One other thing, be careful of his chain spin hyper. I’ve been caught teleporting behind him with it. Other than that, he’s still pretty free to Zero. If he wants to fullscreen zone you, just charge lvl3 Buster and shoot at will - his chains do not reach that far, he will have to come in a bit. When he does you can take it from there. Getting in on him is surprisingly easy.

Some new matchup info.

Lv.4 X Factor Wesker

  • Even though I got bodied tons of time by him, it was pretty funny and fun to try to escape him xD.

Taskmaster

  • IMO, not blocking during air-dash is going to make this one hell of hard match-up. My friend I was playing with didn’t took as much of an advantage of this than I thought he would, but Taskmaster really block this option with his supers and regular arrows (and s.:h:). Did not lose much to Taskmaster at all, just noticed some things Taskmaster players could abuse.

Hawkeye

  • This character is very good. Supers own air-dashes, whiffed Raikouzens, and command dashes. Hawkeye just has to stay back and own Zero free with meter. Arrows are not bad either to zone him out. XF arrows hurt tons because of Zero’s low health. Once you get in, like most matchups, it becomes easier, but Hawkeye can zone you ouy pretty nicely.

Hulk

  • Not much has changed. Just be careful of his new move because he can fake s.:h: or s.:m: and for a command grab.

Captain America

  • Cap actually does pretty nicely against Zero. His j. qcf.:l: zones him from Zero pretty nicely protecting his forward space in the air. He makes Zero take the alternate routes instead to get in. Zero’s normals obviously outclass Cap’s, but that’s the same for much of the cast. Cap also has answers to your own zoning with his supers and qcb.:h:s. If I had to put numbers on the matchup, it would be around 5.5/4.5 in favor of Cap, but not going to 6/4 I think.

Nemesis

  • War of the j.:h:s lol. Both great jump ins that both players had to be aware of. Nemesis has some nasty command grab setups in between his blockstrings, so try to keep him away from you so you don’t have to guess. You can’t zone him with purely Hadangekis, but going into the air is risky because of his j.:s: and his anti-air command grabs. I think you can instant overhead Nemesis the same way you can do so with Sentinel. Watch out also for his j.3:h: range, especially if he has an assist that he can hit confirm with. Fun match.

How do you guys handle Trish with hidden missles assist? I held a tournament a couple weeks ago and I got 0-6’ed in grand finals by my friend’s Trish/Doom/Sent team (mostly Trish) after sending him to loser’s 3-0. I mean I feel like I defeated myself with my impatience but I just can’t figure out a clear-cut way to fight really strong keepaway.

For my dignity, anyone who is giving me advice should not watch beyond the first match ;D (Along with your sanity because it gets really boring and I stopped caring partway through my matches).

Let me start with this, you weren’t rushing nearly enough as zero after watching just that first match, from my experience, the best way to get rid of trishes is to rush them with an assist like drones or missiles to back you up (which i noticed you were only using Zero/ryu/wesker, i would recommend swapping out ryu with a char that has a better assist ala jam session or Plasma beam), and use your buster a good bit as well. Maybe try using a lightening H cancel to buster to mix up some.

I know this is unrelated, but what platform do you play on? Yeah, i’m always looking for new peeps to play.

Character loyalty man :frowning: I mean I’m play to win as much as the next guy but I just enjoy playing Ryu a lot. Zero and Wesker were both day 1 for me. I think I will consider counter picking. I very much enjoy Zero/Dante on the same team so I may try that out. I usually run team Japan if I use Dante.

I’ll pm you my info.

Yeah, Ryu’s Tatsu is a decent assist if you really want to play ryu, but against a character like that, i would recommend a counterpick or an assist that would help in the matchup.

now I’m no pro zero player, but I have quite some experience playing against trish players (one of my region’s top players runs a team DMC team). from watching your first two matches, I noticed that you would back away from trish at the beginning of the match, which lets her automatically get a full screen length away from you and allows her to safely setup her keep away (with traps, hidden missile, yada yada). In my personal opinion, I would start out by trying to get as close to trish as possible, ESPECIALLY at the beginning of the match since zero can now start charging to lvl 3 buster before the match starts and you have the option to throw out H lightning/buster cancel to whatever to open her up as fast as possible. You also have better position to hit doom out of his missile assist when the player calls it out.

Also, don’t be afraid to BLOCK her traps. That’s the number one problem I see most zero’s have when they try to hone in on Trish; they blindly dash/command dash in with a strong hope that something random will hit that bitch out the sky. There’s nothing more mentally frustrating than getting hit by Trish’s traps and projectiles left and right. Remember, blocking her traps also gets rid of them for a brief period of time, so don’t be afraid to block her trap in the air and then calling an assist immediately to cover you on your recovery back down.

I honestly think Trish has the advantage in match up over Zero, especially since Zero can’t stay in the air with his lvl 1 buster spam anymore (buster nerf in ultimate). But if played right and patiently, I think Zero can find his way in on her. H lightning/ buster cancel is also a key tool against her! It also helps to have a screen cover assist, such as hidden missiles, jam session, plasma beam, etc. but honestly I think your team as it is can get the job done… as long as you just play patient and smart. Hell, I would even start ryu and just spam hadoukens in the air all day lol…

anyways i hope my insight helped a little bit. gluck!

I TOLD YOU ZERO MAINS THE TRISH MATCHUP IS NOW IN ZERO FAVOR, USE LIGHTNING MEDIUM CANCEL INTO LEVEL 3 BUSTER. it works like full screen. I’m going to have to post vids on this shit

Hawkeye backed up by Eye of Agamotto, I’ve absolutely no clue how to get on this fucker at all it’s about as bad as Magneto running away constantly with Plasma beam or Jam Session was in vanilla x_x Maybe worse.

Versus a good trish this won’t save you at all. Matchup is still retardedly hard for Zero no matter how you look at it.

how do u deal with Spencer? just run away from him and shoot?

Pretty much, I just stay high up and far away, when spencer’s in there it’s annoying as hell

If he’s swinging a lot, just get behind him as he lands and hit S as hes coming down. Spencers are usually hitting S on the way down. Dont super jump and wish for alvl 3 buster to hit cuz it usually interrupts u

How do you fight Haggar? My friend just picked him up and I’m getting the shit beat outta me.
