The unfortunate truth behind this statement though is that there’s a good majority of people that feel if something isn’t slapping them in the face then it’s poor game design on their part. Sometimes I wonder if games like Megaman X were made today and it was completely fresh…what exactly would happen? Do you know how many people would get stuck probably be stuck in that hole for an hour or so not realizing that X can wall jump? Kinda reminds me of when Super Metroid got released on Wii U VC and all those people posted on miiverse about not knowing how to get though the crawl space…
Devs only have themselves to blame, spent so long holding everyones hands and slappin em in the face with the directions that the generation the hobby gets passed onto dont know how to think critically within the game sphere. SRK is just as bad we spill the beans on all the fighting game shit soon as its found no one learns how to actually play the game, they only know how to play the way other people tell them to play.
I can agree. I like the gameplay and how WRPG style has that customization and are choice-based so you literally are role playing in a sense. But its that worn out setting. I know this aint the best game but Drakengard has the Medieval shit going but it was interesting how they made all those odd ass characters.
I’m gonna just assume the only jrpg you’ve played is Kingdom Hearts, solely since you mentioned Disney.
I think in general JRPG heroes in the last few years have become so pretty that they could be men or women if you put their heads on a male or female frame. Some of them are so pretty that unless they wear some very masculine clothes there is no way to tell which they are. Example: FFXII.
That just how some of J-Culture is I guess. I’ve gotten used to it, since I’m aware that “girly men” is a thing over there. I mean you have people like Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, and then the who JoJo’s thing. I have FFXIII but haven’t started it lol. So I can’t comment, but I do know how Snow looks, so I see your point. I guess U.S. prefers Nathan Drakes, and Japan prefers Tidus lookin type dudes. Shit idk. I’m aware of the cultural difference so it doesn’t bug me. But I do see that they are becoming over the top “pretty”
Diablo 2 is also one of the best RPG’s of all time. Actually, it’s one of the best games of all time, regardless of its genre.
I just got done beating Dragon’s Dogma: DA and the Souls games are some of my favorite games from this entire generation.
Nier was also a wonderful JRPG, absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience for me. Some of the most memorable characters of all time.
My favorite JRPG’s from this gen aren’t your traditional turn-based JRPG’s. They also have pretty unique aesthetics, ones I find much more appealing than your typical anime inspired JRPG. @J-ride should play these games since they are all ARPG’s, dude would enjoy them because he likes the Diablo series.
Im very interested in checking out Dragon’s Dogma, and I have Demon’s Souls, but don’t play it(came from ps plus) due to my backlog. But yeah not all have to be anime inspired, those will catch my eye quicker since I’m a fan of anime. Also rpgs are solid or hybrid gameplay like Valkyria Chroncles. But yeah its not the gameplay, just the setting at times. Legend of the Dragoon is medieval-ish but its one of my fav rpgs. But I will def check out Dragon’s Dogma once my backlog shortens up.
diablo 2 was ok the 1st time you beat it, then seeing nightmare mode, and all its other modes its still the same game with a harder difficulty’s. Diablo 2 is one of the most repetitive games ever. Not saying its bad or good, but when you are spending hours and hours doing nothing but clicking does that make it good? People have spent hours clicking away trying to find the best gear just to pvp. Im not sure if that makes it one of the best RPGS ever. I could name a lot of “Jrpgs” that are less repetitive then D2.
What made the game good for people were the endless options in terms of character customization be it mere skill builds (you could have 10 Barbarians and none would play like the other and all of them could be viable on the hardest difficulty) and/or item builds.
Usually item and skill builds went hand in hand in Diablo 2.
The loot system was so deep and filled with great items and runewords, that you could play the game for 20 years and still wouldn’t have seen every single item in the game.
Diablo 2 is not really a RPG, for lots of people it’s more like an economics simulator, for others it’s the PvP aspect that keeps them rolling, then there’s people that just love to collect rare items, there’s theorycrafters that love the mechanics of the game and want to build the most powerful character possible, some people wanted to see how long they could survive with only one life, and then you got the everyday casual gamer that just enjoys killing monsters in this apocalyptic fantasy world full of horrors.
Diablo 3 really didn’t get anything right except for the slaying monsters part which is immensely fun in that game.
They failed at construction a deep and interesting item system, they failed at giving the player room to theory craft and customize their characters skills, they failed to provide interesting PvP, they failed in creating a world that is dark and gloomy and they failed in giving the game a great social interface.
Diablo 3 was so many steps back from Diablo 2, that it should’ve been called Diablo 1.5
im talking about the gameplay, the gameplay is pretty much just hours and hours of clicking. Looking for items? How do you do that? By spending hours and hours of clicking. How do you PvP? Spending hours of clicking. Sure you can play nightmare or hell, but its still the same game just harder
Most rgps have side quest and mini games, since it adds more to the game. And also gives you rewards, and prizes and gives you something else to do besides level grind.
diablo 2’s only side quest are
cow level which is ok, but it still has the same gameplay
secret tristram-reward hellfire torch. Yet this side quest still has the same gameplay but gives you a reward of a random hellfire torch to a random class.
Both side quest are ok but still have the same gameplay. Other rpgs like I said give you rewards for doing side quest, also they add other stuff like solving puzzles while doing the side quest. Diablo 2 isnt a bad game or a great game compared to other rpgs, its pretty average
What game doesn’t get repetitive over time? Your arguments are flawed. You didn’t even bother to bind your skills from the sound of things(only scrubs click all day instead of binding their skills to hotkeys. Gameplay becomes much faster and more fluid this way.) Or take the time to try the obscene amount of different builds in D2. D2 offers so much depth and replayability combined with amazing gameplay. It’s timeless.
Same way I felt about Phantasy Star. In the beginning you had to get 300 pesas just to continue with the story as soon as you start the game. While fighting 2 types of enemies that only give you a maximum of 8 pesas a piece. So at least about 15-20 battles before you can even progress with the game. The grinding in RPGs are so damn frustrating but so damn rewarding when you can pwn almost anything and everything.
