Street Fighter IV is a gimmicky piece of fucking dog shit. I don’t care if the Ultra system isn’t “overpowered” or “game-breaking.” Hell, I don’t care even if it is. It’s a mechanic that rewards you for losing. That is the antithesis of competition, and Street Fighter IV is the cancer that is killing competitive fighting games.

Here’s my unpopular opinion: Street Fighter IV is the best Street Fighter game since Alpha 2. Regardless of having quite a bit of stupid shit (jump arcs, crossups, toned down characters, throws being shit) it’s still a solid game and an excellent first try when you consider garbage like WW, A1 or NG.
While I wouldn’t go that far, I think the Ultra system blows ass. I’d much prefer if it was like Third Strike with a super meter only. Y’know, the meter that you earn by kicking ass, not that you receive by being raped.
I’d have to disagree with that “killing competitive fighting games” part. If anything SF4 brought fighting games back into the limelight.
As for the Ultra System, it would be better if it rewarded you for defending well (like using Focus Attacks correctly and blocking) instead of giving you meter for getting hit. But of course they should improve offense (throws not being garbage for instance) to balance that.
Still, getting rewarded for getting hit is not such a bad thing imo and it’s been done right before (like in Real Bout 2 and many SNK games).
Maybe for hardcore and casual Street Fighter fans in the US, everyone else in the world wised up and went to play great games like GGXX#R/Slash/AC, VF4/5, Melty Blood, KOF 2002/XI, NGBC, Tekken 5/DR/6, SS Tenka, and Arcana Heart during that 10 year hiatus between 3S and SFIV, if anything Street Fighter taking a back seat for once helped the general fighting game community grow (at least in America) because people realized there were other FG’s to play besides Street Fighter, it always makes me laugh when people or reviewers say stupid shit like “Fighting games were dead” during year 200X :lol:
I believe he meant mainstream, which fighting games were certainly not in the decade since 3s. There were a lot of releases we enjoyed, but that didn’t make it mainstream. The journalists were mostly right.
Mortal Kombat 1, Mythologies and Deadly alliance are all the best games in the series.

I feel that people need to grow up about Ultra’s, they make the game mad fun. it’s because of the ultra’s the game is entertaining to watch, I initially felt that having one ultra per character would make the game stale swiftly but it didn’t, bravo new capcom bravo
as for the focus attack it always seems like a cheep gimick that feels slightly out of place visually, it’s needed for the system to feel nice and rounded but it really does look like a pile of shit. I do think if they perfect it visually it wont feel so unprofessional design wise though
edit: come to think of it I take that back, the normals and turtle friendly gameplay welcome it. sf4 is a good game, and an excellent first edition, but there are better games out there

lol Gamecube had nothing but multiplayer games. PS2 was the best system for 1 player games during that time, then again Id rather play N64 then Gamecube
Yes, I was referring to this side of the water. The rest of the world was smart and continued to enjoy great fighting games while the people around here sat around and let the genre wither.
