Unpopular gaming opinions SECOND IMPACT

He’s talking about Training mode, and (I think) he’s referring to the original TO, where you absolutely have to train. The differences between a LV. 1 soldier and a LV. 4 soldier is huge. They fixed that in Knight of Lodis.

I think I used training a grand total of 2 times and only in the first time I played TO. Whereas I remember doing ghetto training mode in FFT a lot of times to get skills, throwing stones and shit. One of the battles was that ambush where Denim is far from the rest of your team and in the range of the enemy’s archers. If you aren’t at the same level than your enemies you WILL die in that battle.

It’s definitely not mandatory to train in TO if you know what you are doing. The only thing that really bothered me about TO is that the hit percentage is pretty bullshit. I missed several 99% hits in a row.

Well, I’m going to say it. Here it is. Ready?

I don’t like Super Mario games. I think they’re boring.

I never found any appeal to them, nothing enjoyable. I am by no means saying they’re bad. They’re obviously quite good as millions upon millions of people love them. I just can’t stand them in the least.

Really? Cause I remember level 5 archers raping my level 4 guys in two hits or so. Stuff like that, where one level made a huuuuge difference. Hence the training.

I hate games where single level differences play such a huge role.

I went through Knight of Lodis with lots of pretty creative stuff though. Finished the game about 15 levels under the average level.

I actually loved the RE Controls. And any RE after like Code Veronica blew. Re Zero, RE 4, RE5 , all terrible. RE 3 > 1 > 2 [really they’re all amazing, but i have a soft spot for the nemisis and 3] > CV. 4 and 4 are awful, not even RE games.

got to love opinions, there like assholes everyone has one. Im the only person who likes dragon quest series more then the FF series, well at least in the U.S. Japan has a law not to sell dragon quest games on release dates on weekends, cause Dragon Quest is god in japan, along with pokemon and mario

The JRPG is dead.

There don’t seem to be any studios out there capable of doing anything innovative with this genre. What do you do with a story-driven genre when you’ve completely run out of story ideas? The innovation of the 1980s-1990s in Japanese culture has faded away into a general malaise of stagnant moe BS, this includes JRPGs without a doubt.

I would have sold my first-born child to get ahold of a copy of FFX early, but now even when I know Japanese, I think to myself “meh, I’ll wait until the US release rolls around…I guess…”

(The one exception I would offer is Front Mission 5, which breaks the mold in a lot of ways)

Luckily, the WRPG is having a bit of a renaissance thanks to Bioware. I hope some other companies try to do some new and interesting things with it before we all get sick of the Bioware formula, no matter how polished it is.

so jrpgs are dead because you said so? Thats cool, cause Wrpgs to me are all the same, no stories no plot, same game play for every game, and no background story for their characters. Same click a guy give me a bunch of useless quest that have nothing to do with anything, click a quest board and do more random quest that are a waste of time, talk to a bunch of people who act like you care about their problems, and so they make you do more side quest. Come to think of it Wrpgs are nothing but side quest, which makes you feel your getting nothing done.

thats my opinion

This makes no fucking sense. He’s not acting as if his opinion has the power to make or break the genre, he’s just explaining what he feels is symptomatic of their general decline.

if thats his opinion thats fine, but it sounded like he was trying to prove Jrpgs are dead, lol. You want a fact, Japan loves Dragon Quest series more then any other series, and pokemon so jrpgs are going to die any time soon

How old are you? Just curious and stuff.

If I said I was in the army would you feel better? Fucking jackass, I bet you’ve only been on srk like for 1 or 2 years, welcome to the club, you dont like people quoting you then fucking deal with it.

Armored Core 2 is great.

I think he’s asking because you’re acting like your 8 years old.

nice come back that took you like 3 sec to think of. If I say it sounded like he was trying to make a fact, then if you dont like it kill your self. Your just jumping on the “Hey lets all hate jrpg bandwagon like a bunch of cock suckers.” Why not just the name of the thread to Jrpgs haters thread.

Actually I think Mistwalker did a pretty damn good job with Lost Odyssey. I never had a game make me feel the same way FF7 or FF8 did until Lost Odyssey came out. But I’m more of a settings and music person, if the world is boring to me I really can’t get into it.

The main thing I’ve always disliked about JRPGs is that they concentrate so much on a story which never has a single ounce of footing in reality. I know, I know, the obvious counter to this is “You expect reality in a game where you can throw fireballs?!” but that’s not really a legit point, imo. No matter what Final Fantasy you’re playing, the story is almost ALWAYS something so far-fetched (and oddly formulaic) that you, the player, could never even remotely identify with it. You try identifying with someone who has had his body replaced, or someone who is only a dream, or someone who has a predetermined shut-off date. Every idea is so completely far-fetched that the parts of the story I actually DO care about always involve something much more ‘mundane’ than the overall picture that the game is trying to provide.

Contrast this with games that give you reasons to care. For instance, take Oblivion. If you kill someone because you feel an evil streak coming on you are then faced with the decision the very next morning if you want to join a secret brotherhood and take on assassination as a career. While I’ve never been a paid killer I can at least imagine what that’s like, and on top of it every decision I got to make up until that point was MINE. It wasn’t simply “Hey, whatever the game WANTS you to do next is what you should be doing”

The other thing I find unanimous to every final fantasy is the absurd ‘reverse funnel’ effect. You start out the game going through the narrow end with very little in the way of choices. You keep going, and going, and going, until before you know it you’ve explored 98% of the gameworld. Then, once there’s only about 2% of the game left to explore, you get a fucking airship. WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT. The point is always this: The airship is an arbitrary way to get to the last area of the game, AND it’s basically the start of when you can go and get all the top-tier equipment/magic/summons.

And what do you have to do once you’ve decided you want all the best shit in the game? Nothing that has any kind of sensical reason. If you want to get Tidus’ best reason you have to for some reason win a race in less than zero second. If you want Knights of the Round you have to for some reason breed a gold chocobo.

Contrast this again with games that will give you amazing things for stuff that actually makes sense. For instance, winning a great set of armor because you did extremely well in an arena.

I’ve beaten every Final Fantasy up to 10. I stopped playing 12 about half-way through and never touched 10-2. This includes the original and all of the ones that were only released in Japan (I think I beat FF2, but I might have just gotten to the end). At one point, they were a great vision of gaming, and they had video gamers eating out of their palm. These days, they just become another muddled system of numbers, barely interesting characters, and the worst sense of style ever considered by anyone, ever.

As for the other genres in JRPGs? Well, even if they’re amazing they’ll probably never outsell FF in the states, and I think there’s a reason why I haven’t heard of 95% of them (even the ones that are released in America).

Chrono Cross>Chrono Trigger.

The Legend of Dragoon is dope.

HDR is the best fighting game ever.

Gears of War2>most multiplayer shooters.

TMNT (360) is surprisingly not a terrible game.

God of War>DMC.

SMB3>SMW.

Turtles in Time HD while not as good as original is still pretty good.

KOTOR1>Dragon Age (though DA still shits on most rpg’s especially jrpg’s lol.)

Why can’t japanese developers look to BioWare for inspiration on how to create an interesting twist on the typical save the world story and compelling characters instead of doing their usual “spiky haired kid has dormant special powers that are awakened in time of need and meets archetypal characters to help him on his journey”.

The thread itself is about OPINIONS. It sounds like people are posting things as fact because it’s already understood that what we’re posting is our opinions.

Everybody chill out on the trolling/flaming shit and just enjoy the thread for what it is.

On topic though: I hate rare items in games. Like Megalixirs. I will never use a megalixir ever. I’m the kind of guy that goes “Oh, I’ll save this for a rainy day”, and then I beat the game without using any of them. Not because I’m any good at said games, but simply because I worry if I use them at the wrong time I’ll screw myself.

-Oni (PC and PS2) was a really really good game. The hate for it seems really poorly justified. I’ll maybe write a longer rant/suggest people to play this in another post.

-The langrisser series is the best strategy rpg series I’ve ever played. It’s amazing.

-R-type is possibly the greatest shoot em up I’ve ever seen/played, whatevs.

-I loved MGS1 and 2 but I didn’t much care for 3. I’d love to watch someone play it, but I got too frustrated playing it myself.

-Rhythym Tengoku is one of the best rhythym games ever and it’s a shame it’s not more popular. It’s only available in Japanese but you don’t need to know much if any to play the game.

I agree with this.

in b4 massive butthurt.

imo.
