Unpopular gaming opinions SECOND IMPACT

I like Dragon Quest games more then the FF series, because for one thing im not given a bunch of useless information, no emo characters, Dragon Quest 4 started adding back-round stories to all their characters, other thing is the characters in dragon quest games are everyday people, there not some oh look at me im a bad ass emo dude whos going to cry over some dumb bitch. Other thing is Dragon Quest 4>>>>>>FF4. Dragon Quest 5 story was amazing it was a million times better then FF5. Dragon Quest 6 never played, but was about 100.00 in japan still made the top selling charts. Dragon Quest 7 was a long as hell, characters were all deep, had a nice story, took about 150 hours to beat. Dragon Quest 8 was very well done moving into the 3D type rpgs, every game review gave it 9 out of 10. So your theory about dragon quest fans fails, if you dont like jrpgs and cant make failed points, just cause you think there boring, you dont know anything about rpgs.

And you think level grinding is bad in dragon quest games, play any MMORPG its like 10 times worse

imo

I have a problem with Dragon Quest VIII. On the one hand it’s one of the most visually stunning games I’ve played. However the gameplay seems to really not want to stray from the hardcore DQ roots.

Here is my issue. The game fails on a fundamental level of fun. How am I quantifying fun? Let me tell you. There is NOTHING. You get nothing for doing anything. The fundamental reward cycle for ā€œdo shit, get shitā€ is broken. You can play for hours and not get a new item, story bit, ability, stat point, level, etc.

Say you DO get a level. You may not even necessarily get a point to allocate. If you do, it might not even do anything, since certain stats need X amount of points before they improve or give you anything. Money is dispersed at a fairly low rate. So in order to buy new shit, you have to grind for hours.

I’m not saying everyone has to agree or putting this out there as fact. This was just my experience with the game. I’ve played a lot of other DQ games so please don’t try to sell me the ā€œoh well 8 is like that, the rest are godlikeā€ shenanigans.

as a classic gamer I have a big problem with emulation. bottom line is there is just zero fun in booting up a rom on your computer and playing with save anywhere. having any game at your fingertips with no work at all is totally soulless and takes away from the classic gaming experience. Pop in an old game, admire the box, study the instruction manual to figure out what to do…all lost in the emulator experience.

plus I’m on my computer all the damn time anyway…why the hell do I want to be chained to it some more when I want to relax and play some classic games?

I work hard to amass my game collection, my classic systems, my mods to those systems (sound fixes, region switches, s-video additions, etc), crazy peripherals, keep a CRT television around for the best experience for certain systems…that’s what it’s all about. Not some internet loser downloading roms like a bitch.

Do you just mean illegal piracy type emulation or legally downloadable games too? (like xbl/psn/steam/etc)

I agree though, there’s nothing like getting a new game and flipping through the manual. Anyone who’s ever owned a blizzard game before things got all cheap knows what I’m talking about. The manuals were enormous and had amazing works of art as well as short stories in them. I still have my original Diablo/Starcraft ones.

Heh, yeah I pretty much only care about the game (i.e. the data) itself these days. All the cases & such just take up space. I’ve given up on Collector’s/Limited Editions unless they come with some kind of exclusive in-game content. All the other knicknacks get put away, never to be touched/looked at again :stuck_out_tongue:

Interesting…even beyond my usual hatred for the turn-based style I associate with ā€œtraditionalā€ RPGs…this sounds unappealing to me in every possible way…like they set out to make a game that would be absolutely repulsive to me…with ā€œwrong turnsā€ on each and every damn point of the game’s design. Even if this were a regular action game…it still sounds like something I wouldn’t care to play unless someone paid me to do so.

-ā€œOneā€ and ā€œApocalypseā€ were 2 playstation era games that I would love to see remade with today’s systems. They’ve both faded away into obscurity now, which is a damn shame.

-I had more fun with Powerstone than most other 3d fighting games. It’s unfortunate that they dropped the ball on part 2…it was still ā€œalrightā€, but obviously a step down from the quality that was in the first game.

-SC4 is actually my favorite Soul Calibur. This is most likely blasphemy to the average fighting game fan. For me, there’s 2 admittedly shallow things going on here…1) it’s a current-generation Soul Calibur. Naturally, it’s ā€œprettierā€ than the previous ones. 2.) Custom Character mode has returned…and that’s always a winner for me, no matter what the game is. Basically, they already had me at ā€˜hello’ just based on those 2 things. SRK folks and the other hardcore fighter fans out there are concerned primarily with balance issues and gameplay mechanics…I really don’t care at all. They could have 1 character on the roster that instantly KOs the other guy right on the select screen, or immediately when the round starts…all that matters to me is that it was a new SC with decent/satisfying custom character mode for me to play around with. When a non-MUGEN game on console has the capacity for you to make the original Green Power Ranger fight General Zod, Nappa from DBZ, Billy Mays, Mr. Clean, that red devil guy from Legend, Super Mario etc…well, I don’t see how you can deny the greatness. I only hate that they have some clothing/armor/accessory options in the game that cannot be used on custom characters.(e.g.–the skull head, or Algol’s glowing hands effect, light-sabers)

Strat RPG’s are boring and tedious (Yes, FFT included)

Fallout and Oblivion and Morrowind are NOT as good as everyone claimed/claims them to be. They’re more boring than JRPG’s honestly. Oh and tabletop RPGs >>>>>>>> all that shit.

And most RPGs in general.

Bioware >>>>> Bethesda

I find out that 99% of video games make you do pointless things on hours on end. Though I find mixing items with the pot, sages stone, and the other stone that gives tension to all characters, and having 2 of them is broken. If you want good items you have to look for them in side quest, not the main quest. Also looking for medals to turn in for items also rewards you, and if you want more stuff goto the casino, the whole time I played dragon quest 8 and did leveling grinding was on dhoulmagus, and the last guy.

Looking for monsters to add to my party was fun, and getting 2 monster parties is bad ass. So if you think nothing is rewarding in Dragon Quest 8 you must be doing something wrong.

Million im a little surprised that you would believe what everyone says before even playing the game.

Is that a serious question? How about any game where your character isn’t randomly bumping into walls and not being bound by insanely stupid limitations (ie. not being able to walk while firing a gun)?

I have tried multiple Dragon quest games and they have always been flat and boring for the first 5 hours.

When the series means nothing to you, you kind of expect somthing to pull you in at some point. I have never heard of someone trying a Dragon Quest game out and enjoying it (DS games not included). Everyone I know who likes the games, loved them from the beginning.

Final Fantasy is 85% emo but fuck, at least somthing always happens early on to push the story forward. FFV was the last one I can remember that did not.

I hated everything about XII, though.

sounds more like a personal problem then a fact. A lot of people dont have problems with the controls. If your randomly bumping into walls you must really suck at RE games

As for FF stories, they give a bunch of information thats useless most of the time, or try to make the story more complex then it has to be, like FF7. I love FF7 fanboy’s, they try so hard to act like FF7 has a deep story.

Aw man the talk of emulation made me miss the days when we got real manuels not these flimsy little pamphlets with a few controls that you get these days but the manuals which used to get everywhere in the game (talking about unit types in strategy games ect.) and include elements of the game’s story.

I’m an FF7 fanboy :arazz: but I don’t think the story is deep at all. It’s like Avatar if the N’avi had Sephiroth on their side. Not much to it, oil mongers vs tree huggers with one super powerful one that went crazy and wanted ā€œThe Final Solutionā€ to include all humans.

I still love the game. Like I loved Avatar. But that’s because of the worlds and environments. If there was a real Golden Saucer I’m willing to bet EVO would be held Bi-Annually with SBO there and more majors on top of arcades not being dead and casinos living along side them. Oh and 6 Flags.

I’m speechless.

The Megaman Zero games for GBA are vastly superior to the X series and original Megaman series in every regard.

Everything from combat to exploration and collecting is simply more fun and enjoyable in those games.

Zero is also not as boring of a protagonist and actually has a story to him.

It’s because they kept to it’s roots it’s like that. I knew well ahead of time that if I play a Dragon Quest game what to expect. But if you’re playing for hours and nothing happened that’s on YOU. The game doesn’t force the story to advance, the player does. And yeah you usually have to farm for EXP and items in DQ. If you want piss easy leveling up go play FFX. It’s a cake walk. Every game has you do something you don’t care for. Even if it gets you something. I can see why you don’t like DQ.

Zero>X I’ve always felt that way.

Most games should stay to there roots, other wise look what happened with Sonic, everyone bitched and complained. Same thing with warcraft 3, a lot of people didnt like the hero characters. Silent Hill games got worse with after number 3

Depends on the game series of course.

SF1 sucks. I don’t know if that’s an unpopular opinion or not.

When games do stick to their roots people cry foul and demand about some form of evolution. It’s a double edged sword.

That’s common knowledge…I’d love it if Capcom did a remake for it, though.

People like to talk about how awesome FFT’s story is, but it’s got nothing on Tactics Ogre.
