Unpopular gaming opinions SECOND IMPACT

I’m in disc 2 of FFIX right now, and though it’s been rather predictable, for some reason I am really enjoying this game, an RPG.

What could it be that I like about it? right now I have no idea but it’s kept me interested far longer than other FFs.

Maybe It’s the fact that it’s simple, yet not horribly stale (see: dragonquest/warrior games) and there’s no retarded plot like in FF8 or any “…whatever” pretty boy protagonists, the cast and world is really diverse. It’s kind of slow paced but I feel like I’ve gotten to know these characters pretty well, so no problems with the pacing for me. Will never be a fan of FF/Uematsu music, but FFIX has some nice tunes. No shitty metal so far, heh.

atm I’d say FFIX is a better game than 10/x-2 and of course XI.

Though nothing can beat X-2’s battle system, it was too good.

… Incidentally the gameplay aspect was the only thing I enjoyed about X-2. It had some really badass dungeons/bosses.

Simple, I played that one a lot, plus that game introduced a lot of new characters that I liked. Tho 98 and 2002 are better, that’s obvious.

FFIX I enjoy for the humor and little things and of course, Vivi.

Vivi & RE4 Merchant > EVERY GAME CHARACTER EVAR!

Oh yes, how could I forget the humor. Steiner is awesome. And Quina, I always dig the Quina active time events.

I actually found Steiner to be mildly annoying. I was just sitting there waiting until Zidane headbutted his ass or something because of Steiner blaming him for fuckin’ EVERYTHING. :annoy:

I wish his platoon would have gotten more development. At the very beginning when shit was going down to kidnap Garnet I was laughing pretty hard at some of the knight’s dialog.

Are you sure this is an unpopular opinion? I thought this would be common sense by now.

Except to the kids whose first exposure to sonic was the horrible 3D ones of course.

Sakaguchi as far as I know doesn’t actually do much. Masashi Hamazu owns Uematsu really hard. I dunno who Daisuke Fukugawa is. Sakimoto is okay, Matsuno is insane and needs someone to keep him in check, I dunno Watanabe either.

You’re being waaay too vague on FFX so I’ll leave it at that. Interestingly enough, your assumptions about FFX-2 seem more to do with the character designs than anything else, as if you’d paid attention you’d have realised that Yuna was the opposite of a whore (saving herself for a dead person) and the pop singing only occured twice, and that one time wasn’t even her singing.

I also like how you assume that the points I’m defending about the games stem around the character designs, plot design, or environment design.

Speaking of stories, FFIV’s story blows, FFV’s is forgettable, FFVI and VII are okay, FFVIII’s woefully underdeveloped, and FFIX’s simple but very well written. Of course, FFIX as far as I’m concerned took many steps back in the gameplay department…

EDIT:

Ferdinandz: FFIX as I just said has really good writing. FFXII took it a step further, and has good gameplay to boot, so if you haven’t had a go at it, do give it a try.

I mean, you like FFX-2 for the reason I like it, and you like FFIX for the reason I like it, I figure this is a pretty safe recommendation. Just be wary of FFXII’s long stretches of savelessness.

I was really put off by XII’s battle system, I can’t stand the “MMO-like” combat system. I also heard it was a pretty easy game, those two things together are already big cons for me. I’ve also been spoiled of quite a few things. I’m still drawn by all the content I’ve heard the game has, no random encounters, and the skill/ability system. Maybe once I’m done with FFIX I’ll mess around with it.

Dude… X-2 was fuckin dress-up… might has well have stolen your sisters dolls and played house

VII was the only FF I truly enjoyed/had an impact on me.

You see, I don’t get this…

When FF V does it, it’s cool/innovative, but when FF X-2 does it, it’s dull/fanservice, even though, IT’S THE SAME FUCKIN’ CONCEPT! :wtf: :annoy:

Ferdinandz: FFXII doesn’t actually play much like an MMO, at least not the few I’ve played. It’s basically ATB - random encounters + macros (which lets you set up and focus on your gameplan rather than constantly going through the same tedious commands over and over again). Still, if that doesn’t appeal to you, I suggest you skip it, as you’ll see a lot of it.

I wouldn’t really call the game easy, though it has the potential to be so. All depends on skills and equips really. And I guess if you really want to, you could always grind, but I personally hate grinding so I don’t know how much of an effect that has on the difficulty.

Luciano: Dress up or no, it’s by far the best version of ATB that’s been put out. Need to mix that in with Grandia’s version somehow.

Lantis: Yeah, it’s basically FFV’s system on crack. Mid battle class changes, timing based combo attacks, etc.

If only you could control positioning somehow…

the grid system was done in other games???

im outi

Roberth

FFXII sucked balls. Shit story, shit camera, and shit battle system.

9 > 10 > 12.

Unlike RE4, they managed to screw up the entire game with those changes. Or should I say franchise seeing as that’s how 13 is shaping up too…

Fuck the haters. FFx-2 was the shit. Best FF battle system. Yeah I said it, nigga.

Oh we in ff territory now okay let me break it down for yall:

6 and 9>7>8>4>the rest.

FFT is the only good FF. Although some of the other FFs (6 and 9 mainly) have nice stories and characters, they all (except 12, I haven’t played it yet) are terrible games.

Translation:

Those are RPGs, the only thing that counts is the plot! Considering that, FF6 and FFT are my personal favorites, in epicness value, but all of them have issues in the gameplay side that make them fciles. (Or are you telling me that FFT hasn’t dirty/OP techniques/skills, starting from Hamedo and then going upwards…)

Thinking coldly, I guess that yes, FFX-2 has the best battle system of all classic FFs (non sRPG FF).

…And that is pricisely why I hate RPGs. If FMV games had featured better plots and acting, I think the genre would have flourished. Poor Tom Zito.

Everytime somebody says this I want to slap a child.

Sorry, but you’re dead wrong, and so is everybody else who makes this claim. RPGs are still games, and like any other games, RPGs can and WILL be measured against various criteria. An RPG must still possess solid gameplay, a decent presentation, and inspiring music to be worth a damn, no less than any other game.

And plenty of RPGs have combined good stories with excellent gameplay. Many have combined poor (or non-existent/inconsequential) stories with stellar gameplay. But any RPG with an incredible story and piss-poor everything else is a piece of shit.

Since we’re talking FF, here’s what I think:

FF9>FF12>FF8>FF6>the rest.

FF11 has a great story and probably the most in depth in the series, but it’s hidden in a game that’s just unplayable by today’s standards. I don’t get why people get all wet about FF7 at all, to be honest, which is probably not a unpopular opinion around here seeing how many people don’t like games just because they are popular.
