Wolverine, Taskmaster, Hawkeye, Dante, Tron, Chun-Li and Wesker are the ones that come to mind immediately.
so I’m completely convinced we can find an assist that gives storm extra damage and helps in the neutral that isn’t attached to doom, dante, sentinel. I want to use iron man, but he is booty
you could try akuma
I really wanna try Hawkeye’s poison arrow assist or Joe’s bomb loop. I feel both of them could do Storm some justice.
Either way, I’ve resigned myself to putting Storm on the most frustratingly gay team possible; I just need to cement what the gameplan is and I hope one of these assists can make everything come together.
What’s this Joe bomb loop you speak of?
Also, there’s a team theory discussion on the Joe boards, and Joe/Storm/Dante popped up. Storm’s usage in the 2nd slot is pretty self-explanatory (infinite, DHC, assist sniping), but I’m wondering if I could get some thoughts on the Storm/Dante pairing. Fanatiq says Storm + Jam sucks because she already does ass damage, and Jam Session would scale her to oblivion. Does she have better options, or is this just something Storm players have to live with? Can she do similar Magneto + Jam mixups in the corner after a hard knockdown? Any notes are appreciated, thanks.
This. I play Chun on point. And doing ridiculous air combos into team super is amazing. Chun’s super causes a launch too so if i do it with Storm on point i get a free Air S into Elemental Rage. Chun’s leg super is invincible on starups as well so DHC punishes with Storm are guaranteed if you react. Legs lockdown is great too.
She can lol
he’s right, storm can tridash w jL
Fanatiq tried it out for the 1st time w/ her on stream a couple of days ago and he got soooooooo excited.
He was upset w/ himself that he never tried this w/ storm before.
Fanatiq was getting the timing down and playing around w/ some sick mixups and pressure tactics w/ storm.
I might have to go back and adjust my experimentation, then, because I’ve only been able to get an actual combo from it if the j.:l: is counterhit. Maybe I need to be tridashing deeper, but at that point it’s a corner only tactic.
yes- if you check Fanatiq stream on twitch from about a week ago( during the time he got a new CPU), he shows that you have to tridash and get really deep. Fanatiq also was able to have Storm perform a deep crossup tridash L and combo into her cM, cH jump cancel series. He was doing this mid screen and once he got the timing down, did it pretty consistently.
kind of off topic- As good as Fanatiq is w/ Storm(best Storm IMO), it’s AMAZING how little he knows about her in UMVC3. He was looking for better BnBs, and wanted to stop using the her flight combo. He didnt know her most damaging combos,x-factor combos ect. He was getting frustrated trying to increase her damage and doing combos around the range of 350-400,000 damage w/o hail storm. I tried to send him links to combos and let him know storm can get around 700-730,000 solo 1 bar. He declared that Storm sucks but misses her when he switches teams because of how great storm can punish assist w/ hail storm.
someone needs to tell Fanatiq to take a look at the UMvC3 strategy guide. the tri-dash L tech was in there. in other words…since release XD
Yeah. I don’t understand why every Storm players(with the exception of ChrisMatrix) refuse to do Storm’s simple lighting attack and lightning sphere combos. They build nearly the same amount of meter as her regular jump and fly loops, but they do way more damage for the same execution. It just baffles me. Storm doesn’t do great damage by any means, but there’s no point in bitching about Storm doing around 550K with her combos when you can easily get 680-700K with her easy LA combos. Now some of Xero’s posted combos are a little hard for me or seem impractical, but even I can get about 460K meter less before I tack on hailstorm at the end. They really just need to incorporate 3 Lightning attacks and one lightning sphere in a Storm bnb and then they can really make that hard won hit actually worth something. Everytime I see them do a generic fly combo I just sigh at the lost damage opportunity.
After watching Storm’s recent tournament highlights (mostly thanks to Justin and DIOS), I’m wondering if it’s worth building a team FOR her, of if she should just play accessory to an already capable team. She seems to perform just fine in the current environment even though her matchups are pretty poor.
I truly believe that we havent seen what Storm is capable of. Justin and Fanatiq wont/dont use half her moves and Diox IMO doesnt have the skill/technique(no offense). When Justin was fighting Morrigan w/ Storm, he would just keep jumping even when Morrigan didnt have astral on. Storms whirlwind H will clear all of Morrigans soulfist in front of her and give justin time to breathe. Lightning sphere not only will clear the soulfists in its path but when it makes contact either on the ground or a character, it’ll explode. I have punished many point and assist characters at the same time with it. Storm whirlwind H stops zeros buster shot, vipers ex knuckle ect. its slow but its also an option. Storms not morrigan but she not HsienKo either.
IMO Justin hasnt put enough time into her and gets by on his strong fundamental. marvels not his only game and is spread thin. How many times did Justin go for the infinite and drop it?
Fanatiq is different because once he deems something useless he wont try it again. So he has the skills and CAN put the work into it, but will only practice what HE deems good. He now sees that he needs to rethink his stubborness(magnetic Blast) and rework his team.
I think if Justin and Fanatiq stuck to their teams and learn punishes and matchups, it’ll serve them better than “counterpicking”. Justin tried to play frank west and it didnt click. Theres a reason top player all dont pick up morrigan virgil and zero. Justin playing Storm 100% will bring better results than a 50% Frank IMO.
I agree. I remember that I would… pester? Fanatiq about Storm’s infinite all the time in his stream and he would always say that it wasn’t useful because he would kill in one touch or otherwise go for a reset instead. A TAC IS a reset that has a 2/3 chance of succeeding which are pretty good odds compared to the average 50/50. I remember watching him play one time and I was like “You could’ve killed there if you did the infinite. And there. And there. And there.” Plus he has Magneto and Sentinel infinites to solve Storm’s damage problem while Justin’s team does not. His other justification at the time was “How many times has Justin landed that infinite? None! It’s not viable.” then lo and behold he had his first to 10 or 15 or whatever with Justin and he received a handful of Storm infinites fully completed. Plus, he has that easy ass Magneto infinite that he never uses.
Justin just needs to spend more time coming up with setups with Storm instead of Wolverine. Storm’s not great by any stretch of the imagination but she can be played a lot more fully than she is now. I think Justin needs to invest some time into TAC combos from Storm into Akuma and Wolverine first and if they can’t be optimized anymore than they are now then try to start utilizing some moves like lightning sphere more often.
Well, let’s talk about this, then.
Instead of going through the typical “what does Storm bring to the team” discussion, let’s talk about her tools.
- pushback-based projectile screen control
- TAC infinite
- jump/airdash/float cancels
- full combos from raw tags in either direction
- flight
- instant targeted punishes with E.Rage
What this list screams to me is that while Storm excels at moving around in the air, her control aspects are more solid when she’s on the ground and also aiming on a ground level. I firmly believe Storm has the best movement in the game but her aerial control isn’t as strong as her ground control, where she has many more options. A while back I said that Storm controls the air better than Magneto and I don’t think that statement holds water anymore; she can control the skies, but not to the extent that Magneto can even though her movement is better.
Storm seems suited to biding time while waiting for an opportunity to tag the opponent with something that will lead to someone else doing her damage for her; whether you land an airthrow and tag out or TAC out or DHC out, she seems most suited to getting the hit and then leaving. Actually, Storm seems like a character that should constantly be in “rotation” on a team using things like THC/DHC assist punishes, TAC infinites, combos from outgoing raw tags from airthrow, combos from incoming raw tag tipper and crossover counter when she’s under pressure.
Do you guys agree? The more I think about Storm, the more I think she needs to be fluid and “fit in” to not only the team but also her situation and play accordingly as opposed to other characters that have one or two gameplans and need to stick to it. The low damage, but high utility and hitconfirm success rates suggest that she’s less a pillar of a team and more of the adhesive that keeps the pillars from falling apart.
SWEET MERCY
I’m playing Morrigan/Storm/Dante for the first time
and it’s AMAZING
This team sucks ass against Hulk, though.
How are you losing to hulk, Morrigan has a plethora of attacks that hit multiple times? I was thinking about using Joe/Storm/Dante but I don’t know how that would work? any other anchor suggestions?
i agree storm being played fluidly depending on how the battle is going is probably best. You forgot OS Lightning Attack, something none of the other tridash characters have. Also she has the best disjointed normals out of Tridashers. Storm players should be always be safe because her normals are so large. Never airdash in too close, always aim for the center or the tip of her hitbox on her normals. Plus she has the best pressure out of airdashers with her jump cancels.
Jump cancelling s.M is a chore though.
Joe/Storm/Dante, coincidentally, is one of the teams I was experimenting with a while ago. I think it’s good if you’re really going for that terrifyingly lame playstyle that doesn’t ever kill, but just absolutely drives your opponent up a wall. The team specializes in assist snipes, birthdays, fullscreen punishes and pretty decent screen control. Slow is a bonus from Joe, but overrated in the long run, as you could be doing more damage otherwise and the team doesn’t really set up unblockables to take advantage of; great for killing opposing morale, however.
I like that team overall, but I find that it’s hard to come back when you’re behind and the team manages resources like X-Factor and meter quite poorly–if you intend to take advantage of the situations that the team presents, then you’re going to have to spend what you’ve got and make sure it counts. As for other anchors, I actually tossed Hawkeye on the team and switched his spot with Joe. Point Hawkeye makes this team extra fruity. Great for inducing rage.
What do you guys think of Storm / Sent / Doom? Its pretty much point storm, and then when she’s gone I can zone with Sent + missiles.
