You know, this kinda reminds me (at least a little bit) of when Wong won the side-tourney at Evo a few years back for XvSF. Dogface, someone who pretty much kept (keeps?) that scene alive, made this GIGANTIC positive post about how Wong won with straight-up spacing and footsies and fundamentals in a game he wasn’t THAT familiar with. No bullshit. No infinites (a trademark of that game). Just basics. Dogface went on to say that he and many others just flat out didn’t know how to play against it. They had to think outside the box to deal with it and couldn’t do anything about it before Justin won. Can’t win a game with infinites if you can’t hit someone or if they keep you pressured and spaced safely (i.e. armor/assists).
Many players just don’t know how to deal with that. We saw it at Evo with Noah getting top 50 (“you mean I CAN’T just hit buttons against Sentinel or Hulk?”), Viscant winning Evo (“You mean I CAN’T just hit buttons against Haggar’s assist?”), and Unknown OCVing many high-profile teams tonight (“You mean I CAN’T just hit buttons against Nemesis?”) because of this.
If you want to blame that on randomness or unfamiliarity, I’d like to point out that these are normals and specials. Not complicated setups. Not unknown tech. And when you have a sponsor sending you to a tournament on their dime, those excuses are moot.

I think Doom/Strider is an awesome pair. Both have assist to help each other out greatly.
Viscant isn’t doing optimal combos, which is hurting him. He’s not even doing the Doom loop. Once he learns the painful combos for Doom so he can capitalize on Vajira assist, he’ll be good (hoping he has the ability to do them). He’s opening people up but just dropping combos or going for the easy magic series stuff.
Posting simple answers > Beat everything, once Unknown got figured out he got free. He got a different tech that gave him simple wins and some or most, lucky wins, then he was figured and he was done…

The think with Viscant is he not an execution type of player, he’s a thinking mans player, who like to analyze stuff, and make you play his game.
