UMVC3 SRK Tier List/Theory Discussion. (NEW THREAD NOW AVAILABLE)

It’s really hard to make a tier list atm. Its just to early. And I don’t understand why people are denying zero is the best character in the game lol.

Level 3 Frank hyper has a lot of invincibility from what I hear so especially if you started her weapon x super first he probably would have been able to beat it.

Okay I might be flamed for this but I honestly don’t see Viper being the best in the game. Don’t get me wrong, I think she is great character, possibly top 5 material but she seems to lack range and priority normals unlike characters such as Wesker, Zero or Dante who seem to have amazing normals.

His damage is pretty low.

Here’s my list once again. If anyone has a problem, say so.
The tiers are S,A,B,C. Plain and simple, just like it used to be.

[details=Spoiler]
S Tier = C.Viper, Dante, Doom, Strider, Wesker, Zero

A Tier = Dorm, Firebrand, Magneto, Deadpool, Vergil, Akuma, Jill, Ammy, Felicia, Hawkeye, Nova, Phoenix, Spencer, Taskmaster, Trish, Wolverine, X-23.

B Tier = Captain America, Chris, Dr.Strange, Frank West, Hulk, MODOK, Morrigan, Shuma, Nemesis, Rocket Raccoon, Ryu, Sentinel, Spider Man, Storm, Super Skrull, Thor, V.Joe,

C Tier = Arthur, Chun Li, Ghost Rider, Haggar, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Phoenix Wright, She Hulk, Hisen-ko.

*The S-Tier - The general consensus is that these characters are amazing and accel on point, nearly self sufficient, and require little team-building around them, and have a useful assist or two to boot. *Zero is the only odd one out, but then again he’s Zero.

The A-Tier - These characters accel at what they are supposed to be but are held back by one minor flaw which is usually corrected by a wide variety of assists.

The B-Tier - These characters accel but they often require specific set-ups, and certain assists to be “A Tier quality”. But the B-Tier can hold their own.

The C-Tier - These characters often require heavy assistance and specific set-ups to accel but if the team is built solely around them, then they can shine. [/details]

Weapon X Prime has 5 frames before invincibility kicks in, being invincible from frames 6-64.

However, Survival Techniques under level 3 is immediately invincible for frames 1-17 or something.

So yeah THERE GOES THAT MYSTERY

Grr! Damn iPhone clicking post before I’m even done!

list

[details=Spoiler]A+ - Zero, Dormammu, Dante, Hawkeye, Wesker, Doctor Doom
A - C. Viper, Vergil, Trish, Magneto, Strider, Firebrand, Morrigan, Nova, Spencer, Taskmaster
B - Wolverine, Amaterasu, Storm, Felecia, Frank West, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Akuma, Sentinel, Phoenix, Jill
C - Ryu, Viewtiful Joe, Spider Man, X-23, MODOK, Deadpool, Thor, Chris, Haggar, Super Skrull, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Nemesis, Hulk, Ghost Rider, Iron Fist
D - She Hulk, Chun-Li, Hsien-Ko, Phoenix Wright, Arthur, Shuma Gorath[/details]

So here’s another revision of my list. I’ve tried to follow the format on the front page with five tiers, although I excluded S because I don’t think there is any S in this game, at least not at this rate. How did I come to the tier placings in this list? This tier list is mostly matchup based, I do it like this because it actually tells us something about the character other than he’s good or she’s good. I essentially broke down the characters into five different matchup based character types, keepaway/zoning/rushdown, zoning/rushdown, keepaway/rushdown, rushdown and keepaway. Current gameplay practice has shown that in general the more options the character has the better they perform and the better matchups they have in relation to the rest of cast. It has been observed that keepaway/zoning/rushdown characters tend to perform better than rushdown or keepaway characters because they have the necessary tools to space them out and/or outplay them at their own game. They generally have the best matchups in the game and only struggle against other characters of their type, unlike rushdown characters who do well in general but have bad matchups against more varied and more dominant character types.

I’ve tried to create a balance between matchups, strengths and weaknesses. Strengths/weaknesses include things like health, punishability, predictability, difficulty of use, etc. Matchups form the base for the list and strengths/weaknesses are considered, but over ruled if matchups dictate a particular issue wih that characters inclusion in that tier. On the contrary, matchups are considered but over ruled if a particular strength or weakness dictates issues with that characters inclusion in that tier. The result is that some characters are lower because their bad matchups and/or weaknesses outweigh their good tournament results, and vice versa. Characters with more options and good matchups are more towards the top of the list, characters which compete but have bad matchups are in the middle of the list, and characters who struggle to compete and have bad matchups all around are at the bottom of the list, with some exceptions.

For example, this is why I place Wolverine in upper mid, because he does well in tournaments but had bad matchups against almost all of the characters we can agree are top tier. He shares more in common with the characters within his own tier than he does with characters who are above him, regardless of his tournament success. Unlike a character like Dormammu or Wesker, who has good tournament success and shares the tools which make them a powerful threat against all character types, including their own.

Again criticism welcome if anyone wants something explained I’ll explain it. Here’s my classification of character types if you’re interested, feel welcome to discuss. It’s interesting to note more agreed top tiers are in the first two groups as opposed to the last three groups.

I gotta say, I like Demon’s current list a lot.

Yeah, you may get flamed, it happened to me too. Nothing to worry about tho, for every Viper lover there seems to be a Viper hater as well.

I’m not a hater, but I question her a lot.

Well at this early in the stage it’s hard to really get a point across that Zero, Dante or Wesker are number one without getting pushed into a corner of counter arguments also so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Just know if you’re going to use the words “best” or “number one” to describe a character here… you’re basically climbing Mount Everest.

Counter arguing the number 1 character is pretty rough also.

Viper is indisputably the best character in the game.

inb4 insane flaming everywhere

Firebrand is far from one dimensional. He is one of the best characters in the air and the best on the ground. His mixups are literally impossible to block when done correctly. The fact that he can instant overhead almost the entire cast when they are crouching is ridiculous. The sheer fact that when he is up close he has access to a low and overhead at anytime is amazing.

As far as screen switching cross ups yea he cant teleport… but his command dashes in the air are amazing and he can go from to corner to the next in no time.

Basically when Firebrand is in the air you can press buttons and when he is on the ground you cant press buttons

Well the game is still in early phases, but I think we’re overhyping firebrand a bit. Only time will tell though.

Why do people use “literally” in inappropriate places? (Unless you mean his level 3)

It literally makes me want to kill myself.

It works the other way around too you could be under hyping him

No one is using Firebrand to his true capabilites at the moment. People are still just derping around the screen with him and not really utilizing all his tools yet. They are just spitting fireballs in the air and landing and mashing cr. A (Not to say it isnt a good tactic, but people need to be more creative with his mix ups up close) Not to mention a lot of people arent running teams where Firebrand can get his good damage off a raw tag after a bon voyage.

Hopefully Chrisis can eventually show everyone how stupid Firebrand is (assuming he is still playing him)

He’s a far from one dimensional character, and able to play most ways that he would like. I play Firebrand so I do know how his tools work. His best left right isn’t from Demon missile M, his normals aren’t short ranged, standing A has more range than some characters 2Bs. That’s not how instant overheads work, you don’t swoop into them they’re as you immediately leave the ground so it’s essentially an 8 frame overhead. Firebrand can do lots of cross up set ups with a combination of A xx 214B and air series with swoops. I haven’t seen any strong defensive zoning that’s a severe problem for him yet.

Is he that hard to block though? I’ve faced what I would call good Firebrands, and all though he’s a tad bit of a whirling dervish, at the end of the day, it’s basic high low stuff, and it’s not really as fast as something like Magneto/Drones, which I would classify as almost impossible to block. I agree that his rare tendency to dominate the air completely with air Bon Voyage and a unique air based offense can be annoying, but I’ve never fought one and felt like, damn, this is OP and I need to fear this.

Here. You guys can make all these "he lost his power, he has bad match ups with tops…) but Majors show differently. Zero never even came close to the placement that Wolverine gets consistently. Majors are what separates the theory from the actual, and from the actual Wolverine is capable of remaining deadly against his own bad matches.

There is no way in hell all firebrand has is basic high low stuff. The character is ridiculous. I actually really like playing firebrand, but I somewhat dislike the fact that he doesn’t have that much combo potential because I like to “style.”

The correct one is faster than Magneto with drones and yes, when played right he is near impossible to block.
