I will have to disagree with you on the SF4 part normally the player with the better footsies will win majority of the time and a lot of characters can lead into big damage from there footsies and good reads.
I believe that is false. I can count on dozens of hands that I have seen someone play extraordinary footies** (Dieminion, F Champ, Daigo, etc.)**** but will lose to some guy divekicking and shit. The only instances I have seen footsies leading to good damage is if they have super stocked up, if Abel lands a step kick, if Rog has EX meter and if a character can do normal link into ultra (Blanka, Balrog).**
Otherwise, I see throw, mixup, get the hit, big damage (again, for SF4). IE, Seth, Viper, Cammy, Akuma and Adon, whom are among the best in the game. Coincidence? There are other characters that fit this as well, and they are no lower than mid tier (or at least SHOULDN’T be lower than midtier) in this game like Ibuki, El Fuerte, Rufus, etc.
I’ll give you good reads, but lets be real, thats in all competitive games, not just fighting games, but competitive games. What makes SF4 so special over Marvel 3, SFxT, or Chess or Battleship? Nonetheless, I’ll give you that.
A lot of characters can combo into there ultra for example Guy, Sakura, Ryu, Ken, Gouken, and much more and meter isn’t just used for EX either a lot of players use meter for set up, safe jumps, OS etc.
**With Guy, you have to do a target combo, and in the corner for average damage. Sakura you have to do Shouken into ultra or EX Tatsu into ultra, which isn’t worth it unless you are killing a character. With Ryu, you have to FADC. Ken you have to FADC. Gouken you have to grab or FADC in certain cases. Every instance for ultra, minus Balrog and Blanka, you need meter or a gimmick/certain positioning and they don’t lead to the damage that I am accustomed to for a Street Fighter game. **
cr. Forward, cr. Forward xxx Horizontal ball for Blanka did like 50% in ST. EVO moment #37 did 50% in 3S. Now in SF4 to do 40%, I need to burn 2 EX meters and then spend my ultra? Its not worth it no more unless you KNOW you about to kill. Granted, ST did take way too much damage, but 3S was perfect IMO.
**You can combo into ultra, but you can’t CANCEL into it. Your main source of damage gets scaled to shit with all the extra stuff you do with comboing the ultra by means of FADC or linking it. By canceling it, you bypass the stupid shit and you get right to the meat of it. Why do you think some supers do so much? Its not that they don’t scale, its just that you go RIGHT into the meat of it. **
I also would like to know how is EX used for safe jumps. Im actually interested.
