UMvC3 General Discussion: You can't control it

I remember when I bought my first gaming magazine. It was PSM2 and the cover game was DMC (Amusingly they were billing it with ‘the new scariest game ever’. Probably due to its origins as a Resident Evil sequel.). It came with a DVD of the trailer and it fucking blew my mind. Went to school the next day and was like “Holy shit, you seen Devil May Cry!? There’s this guy with a sword, but he’s like… not a guy, he’s a fricken demon-guy and he has this sword and two guns and he’s all like pew pew pew pew and then there’s this lava spider, but he doesn’t give a fuck and stabs him a bazillion times in the face and then he shot this other guy in the air and he shot the guy so many times he made him levitate with bullets and then…”

Yeah, it was the coolest thing my eleven year old eyes had ever seen.

Do not fuck with those who wieldthe scarf of ass kicking.

If you would have told me this before the clusterfucks of Dantes stormed online, I would probably have liked DMC.

Holy crap, our DMC origin stories are eerily similar. Elevenish, game magazine preview… are we… the same person? Places hand on computer screen

Slight salt post.

I’m ass.
But damn i don’t feel good fighting the common guys (dante, vergil, ghost rider, zero,WESKER).
Even against others who are assier then me they still manage to get in.

I do enjoy when i win though. I just wish it were more frequent.

I know that feeling bro. I’d trade my soul to Mephisto for the ability to be GOOD at these fighters I invest so much time and effort into. I dunno, maybe I’m cursed.

Lets see… I play Spencer, Zero, Taskmaster, Vergil, Frank, Nova, Strange, and Hawkeye. (Note their all high tierish. I’m not a tier whore, people i play tend to get buffs.)

Spencer: I like his damage and ease of use, invincible hyper and his general personality. Never played Bionic commando but i’d heard of it. Spencer’s fighting style just works for me.
Zero, Big megaman x fan (One of the first games i ever played when i was a kid was MM-X5/6) and with X not in the game i went to Zero. I’m not very good with him, no big “I’ma OHCO you!” combos and i don’t use buster (I get distracted and i rely on my :l: too much). Still has the tools to get the job done though. Plus GENMU 0 is made of Win.
Taskmaster: Before MVC3 i’d never heard of him, when i unlocked him i liked his easy damage and ranged attacks. Plus i like how he’s such a douche. I sorta wanna read his comics now…
Vergil: I’m 16, i like swords and animelooking dudes in trenchcoats. I played DMC3 and wanted to play as vergil because he worse blue. And he looked cooler than dante. But yeah, that’s basically it.
Frank: Played the hell out of Dead rising (Demo Version) still don’t know much about what he’s like in the games though. In this he reminds me of Taskmaster. Disjointed attacks, a decent projectile, simple combos.
Nova: Again, never read the comics but once i saw his artwork i was like “He must have a Beam assist! YESH!” then i saw his gameplay and it reminded me of Skrull and Capfalcon had a flaming baby. Was disappointed by lack of beam assist but the easy damage pulled me in. Plus i saw Novaforce talk about what he’s done and i got all hyped.
Strange: He had a beam assist and the Read a Book. That’s basically it.
Hawkeye: I dunno. Like how he plays but the 2 hit combo system for him keeps messing with me. Oh, and he’s a ass too.

So in the end there’s three things you need to have for me to play you. 1: Good damage. 2: Ease of use. 3: Be a typical asshole/bass character.

Sorry for the wall.

We have origin stories? AND THUS GAMER-MAN WAS BORN. Armed only with super human thumbs and a growing disinterest in the outside world, he wages his never ending war on boredom!

Dude, are you on PSN? We should get some matches in together and take refuge in our mutual suckiness.

Mephisto? Hell I’d let modok have mine, and god knows what he’d do with it. something silly i bet.

I want to play other bad people so we can suck together.

oh and robo, im fairly certain you don’t suck.

I don’t really have any idea where to put this, so I’m just going to put it here.

I’m willing to pay one of the pros at this game for lessons (whether that ends up being through online games, skype chats, or whatever doesn’t matter). I feel like I’m just on the edge of being at a tournament-winning level but I’ve been stuck on this edge for far too long and I’m really inconsistent. So if any of you have a good idea of where to post this, or you can pass this to a pro that you happen to know (or if you are a pro in the case of those of you who actually read this board like Viscant) please let me know. This plateau is more infuriating than anything I have experienced.

I hate it whenever people who say they suck badly at something are actually really good. :c

People compare themselves to the best players and feel they fall up short, when in reality they are pretty good.

It’s not really that they have a personality that matches my own - for the most part, I just play as characters who make me smile. This can be for several reasons.

I’ve played as Felicia since I first saw a Darkstalkers cab in grade school. I like cats and I like girls, why wouldn’t I like cat girls? Plus, gameplay wise, I’ve always liked two things especially - high speed mix-up characters, and grapplers. Felicia is both of those things.

Devil May Cry was one of my favorite PS2 games. Never actually played any of the other DMC games, but my love of the first was enough to cement Dante being a character I would use - even if I feel like a bit of a tool now that everyone is using him.

Taskmaster is one of those cocky, level-headed, lampshade hanging action heroes that I loved back in the day. I mean, I never knew who he was until now, but he reminds me of characters like Gambit and Spider-Man, who were favorites of mine as a kid.

I used Arthur and Haggar for a while because of fond memories playing Ghosts 'n Goblins as well as Final Fight in the arcades. Those memories, plus the memories of playing Darkstalkers, was the entire basis of my initial team of Haggar/Arthur/Felicia.

Phoenix Wright and Frank West are the two new characters I found the most enjoyable to play as. I prefer complex characters with a lot of depth to them - unfortunately, I’m finding that the more simple a character is (characters like Wesker, Wolverine, Vergil, etc.), the more likely they are to be OP - with the reverse being that complex characters get completely murdered. They might be capable of being incredible characters, but the work you have to put in to make them incredible characters relies on your opponent making multiple mistakes in a match - if you are fighting an opponent who won’t make mistakes, you can’t even begin to do anything.

So yeah, for the most part, the characters I choose are due to nostalgia. If this were KOF, though, I’d let you know exactly why I choose characters:
A) They are cute: Kula, Yuri, Athena, Blue Mary.
B) They are walls of steel with hearts of gold: Clark, Maxima.
C) They remind me of other characters: K’ (Spike Spielgel), Chris (Soujirou Seta), Oswald (Gambit).
D) My favorite… they are dripping from head to toe of psychosis: Iori & Yamazaki. Those laughs are so OP.

I hate it when I get owned by a Hsien-ko player and then come on here and see that she’s the worst character:(

Dante is just awesome, he’s my favorite video game character too and honestly if he wasnt in MvC3, I probably wouldnt be as interested as I am now. He’s def. not the only character I like in the game, but he just makes the game sooo much more fun.

Even the DMC3 intro was good

includes a table flip :open_mouth:

This just reminded me, isnt there an HD collection coming out?

EDIT: And why the hell isnt shirtless Dante his alt?

(ill keep it down to my main groups with a couple of cameos or i will end up going on forever about how i love everyone, still be lengthy though)

Firebrand- Is it weird i find him adorable, in the same way the killer gremlin from that simpsons episode was (ahh its trying to claw my eyes out) I like the fact that he was a villain memorable enough to get his own games, and i love his gameplay. There is a lot of unquantifiable stuff i like about him, and its telling he is one of the few capcom characters i wanted most, i was just happy when the others showed up.

Ghost Rider- Like the character from the comics. He is a bad@SS layed out so unapologetically that i cant help but like him. I may knock some characters for being given those obvious bad@$$ qualities, but that is usually because it has already been done. Vergil for example, i dont dislike him, im just not as big of a fan of his as my friend is because that type of character had been done before. Ghost Rider came before characters of his type,so he gets the grandfather clause. Also like the keepaway.

Dormammu- Big fan of mystical comics, and the mythos established in them (like thor for that reason) Dormammu was the first dimension lord in comics(unless im missing someone) so he gets a lot of the same things ghostrider has going for him. And im a sucker for the boastful villain, especially the ones that are actually capable of being a threat if the opponent doesnt keep up their guard. You know what from this point on ill cut it short, all on the list, i like the gameplay of.

Iron Fist- I love kung fu movies. So he automatically had that going. Add to that the fact he has also gained his own mystical mythos in recent years,im sold.

Hawkeye- Always liked him as a character, the personality gets him over, and he stopped a uberpowerful threat by cheating in a bet. And thats awesome.

Shuma-Gorath- Along with blackheart ive backed him since MSH. I’m a fan of the lovecraft style creatures, and when they added him into doctor strange he fit perfectly. Until just recently you could guarantee all his appearences would be epic.

Modok- When he was first rumored after his arm appeared in x23s trailer, i was one of the few people who kept a positive attitude about him at first. Having to defend something builds attachment for it. That and i love the fact that he can seamlessly be threatening or comical depending on what the writer wants. Also he defeated a raccoon, SCIENCE.

Doctor Strange- I love most of the spell caster characters in comics, but his mythos became among the richest, and honestly as much as i love doctor fate, strange does have a lot more personality, which gives even his most out there stories a human element.

Deadpool- Its deadpool.

Super Skrull- Love cosmic stories as much as the mystic ones. He has a similar good guy/bad guy thing going on depending on your view, and i love his evolution as a character.

Rocket Raccoon- Aside from the obvious elements, he is just a likable character, being the comic relief the team needs, while still being a serious character when needed.

Nova- He is like the cosmic spiderman, and he has gotten to be quite the bad@$$ lately.

Spiderman- He is spiderman, the mid fight quips(which the movies did sorely lack) the relatability, the interesting villains, there is a reason he is so well known.

Doctor Doom- It’s Doctor Doom.

Arthur- Love the chipper attitude, plus he fought the devil in his underpants and won.

Taskmaster- Always loved the fact he wasnt a regular villain. He doesnt take things personally, because that would cost him money. He will train both hero or villain, and he is likable, if he wasnt payed to fight you you could probably could hang out.

So I was at the mall today and I decided to goto GameStop and pick up the UMvC3 strategy guide. My mall has 2 GameStops. Went to the first one was a lil busy so I went to the other one and I asked the guy working if they had it, so he went to check the inventory on the computer and his coworker next to him gave me a dirty look and said “they don’t make a strategy guide for ultimate”. I gave him a look likes he’s stupid and told him “yeah they do” and he told me again no they don’t, I told him again they do. Right after that the guy doing the job right and looking it up tells him there is one. That douche pissed me off so bad and they didn’t have it in stock.

So I went back to the first GameStop I was at, asked about the guide and they found it in no time. Not only that they were cool people they were asking who I use and telling me about their teams. We talked about it long enough to annoy my wife lol.

Holy XFactor, Gamerman! Wesker’s robbed the Buff Bank and left Hsienko and Spiderman with nothing!

Yes sir, I’m JollyOcelot on PSN. We can pop open that tub of internet ice cream and weep gently while I drop a Wesker combo for the umpteenth time.

DMC3 was a rollercoaster of stylish hack n slash awesomeness. Seriously one of my top 3 fav games of all time. The first cutscene… aww man. It’s literally saying “You thought that was cool? Lol, this is only the FIRST LEVEL, bitch!”

But I think the DMC HD collection is set for early next year. That, Mass Effect 3 and Anarchy Reigns are taking it as most epic first quarter ever.

Maybe MODOK would use the power of science to make you the greatest fightin’ game player of all time. MODOF.

That sort o happened to me. Went to my local GS during the midnight release the day of release and asked for it. After arguing with the guy about whether there was a guide or not he checked the CPU and told me that its not there yet and should be in tmw. I go the next day and another guy tells me they just got a shipment but he hasnt had time to unpack it (but he said the guide did come on that shipment). He told me to come back later in the afternoon (it was busy so I didnt complain). I go back and wait in line and the two guys that I talked to are the only ones working there. When I finally get to the front, the asshole tells me they dont have it before I even ask. Why the fuck did u let me stand in line that whole time then? -_-

Also just remembered this guy at Target called it Marvel vs Comcast 3. I wanted to lol so badly but I didnt want to be “that” guy who always corrects mistakes. Hell I usually say “axe” instead of “ask”

Is your gamertag supposed to make me think Metal Gear?

I know running/turtling is a legit tactic in this game, but i gotta admit its funny as hell to see some people run from me. Wesker and Dark Phoenix being the main ones. Why do you have a character thats good at rushdown and does good dmg yet you’re running away? And no I didnt have XF activated either time and Im not talking about zoning, Im talking about seriously jump blocking into a corner. My team isnt even that scary and its very predictable (overheads and cross-ups all day bc low attacks are for pussies, jk). Except for when Im playing around and I do Stalker Flare XFC Stalker Flare and just watch what you do in fright (or as my little sis says, “whatcha gonna do with two big balls coming at your face? Run. RUN!”)

Yup definitely need to friend you on PSN. See what I assume your Nova is all about.
