That is a valid statement and no it is not our job to tell them to advertise to us however this is the secondary point. The main point is that he would be a good addition to the roster and a character a lot of people would actually purchase. What is the point in making content that no one buys? There are a lot of people playing vanilla that never even bothered with shuma or jill because of a lack of interest. Weather it be from not liking character design, game play style or lack of knowledge of the character on their part. “Smart marketing is good money it’s never the other way around.” that is a saying that holds true so even though I despise Megamans inclusion as a character in UMVC3 capcom would be fools to not include something that would generate a guaranteed revenue stream. I do not work for capcom or their Marketing and Sales Division but if I did your DLC content would look as follows.
Megaman: (some version) Why? Simply because at this point in time it would be a bad business move to not do so.
Asura: Why? Right now not doing so is passing up on an easy way to get more publicity for a character outside of the people the game is geared for. In other words its just smart business.
B.B Hood: Why? If you really want to make another Darkstalkers game this is the way to go.
I wont go into the marvel examples because there is no need to, I personally cannot stand B.B hood or Megaman but because of what I do for a living I can see things from a corporate/Business point of view.
As far as canon power levels not counting this is absolutely true but it is always nice to have someone who at least everyone would agree stands a snowballs chance in hell against everyone on the marvel side canon or not.
I think Carnage is a good fit but cannot see marvel or activision letting it happen. I think the problem with spidey villains is that activision holds the rights to all things (electronic game wise anyways) that is spidey.
Emma frost would be good but I think Marvel is the one who said no more X men reps.
Currently in the Marvel/Disney side of things this is exactly the opposite, Carol is tied to several media (Movie and Cartoon) projects while Psylocke is floating around in middle tier comic book obscurity.
Thanos is also currently tied up in just about all of Marvels current book film and animated projects so I can see this one happening.
Marvels stance has pretty much been all about marketing I know it was said thats not our job but marvel is doing a pretty good job of it themselves.
Ghostrider has a new movie coming out as does dr strange and Rocket who will be in the guardians of the galaxy movie, along with the guardians and nova popping up on the avengers cartoon. They are filming the avengers movie now which has hawkeye in it and have an Iron fist movie slated for release in the next two years. Thats the only reason I feel some of the votes people cast even if they are good characters just wont happen on the marvel side. On capcoms side anything is possible.
That’s only becuase the MvC2 Thanos was complete crap and nowhere near true to the character. He fought nothing like Thanos did. At all. Bubbles!!! Rock slabs? Is that really the best they could come up with for the powers of the Infinity Gauntlet? Come on now… Sadly he would need a complete remake, because as someone said he doesnt have the gauntlet anymore, and honestly the real Thanos fought nothing like that.
But he’s not only been in the comics quite a bit at the moment, but he has probably been the biggest major villain (and at times anti-hero) Marvel has had since the 90’s! He was involved in Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, Infinity Abyss, “Thanos”, Marvel: The End, Annihilation, Thanos Imperative. (and I’m sure I’m missing more) That’s a large majority of all the largest scale storylines Marvel has had, and he’s been relevant as one of the most dangerous and powerful villains in the Marvel universe for over 20 years. I really don’t see any one villain who has been more menacing or consistent than him (and that’s not just my favoritism talking lol)
Not to mention, of the modern MvC3/UMvC3 specific characters (that were not in MvC2) that have been included because they have been more relevant as of late (such as Super Skrull, Nova, Rocket Raccoon, Strange, Thor) Thanos is the one villain that has had direct encounters with all of them (including EVERY character who was in both MvC2 and MvC3). It just makes sense for the relevancy of the character to the other characters - unlike someone like Venom who is primarily a villain to Spiderman, Thanos is a villain to almost everyone. They have enough history that he could potentially have a different opening quote before the fight facing every Marvel character lol. Not to mention Dormammu vs Thanos has been one of the most requested encounters among Marvel fans.
I agree to the marketing idea, but to be honest i think they added the characters as well because they Are the most well known B characters (By B i mean characters that are AWESOME! but arnt wolverine or spidey, or they are too powerful to be used much to be an A character) in Marvel atm, and all of them add something to the game which i like alot :D!
Asura probably would be a good character. I could make a decent movelist for him and I think I’ve only casually glanced at one screenshot and one promotional video of him. The folks at Capcom, with access to much better reference materials on him, could no doubt do a much better job. If Asura shows up, I will sigh at how silly it is that we asked Capcom to ‘adver-character’ us, then I’ll get over it and probably accept him as a valid addition to the roster. My resistance to this is more philosophical (“We shouldn’t be doing Capcom Marketing’s job for them, and they’ll probably propose Asura anyway!”) than anything I’m going to seriously dig my heels in and fight people over. If Asura shows up, cool! I just think there’s a good chance of it happening anyway and suggest spending votes on other things you want to see in the game, things that Capcom Sales & Marketing won’t go to bat for you on so you’ll have to stand up and do it yourself. …Of course, it is entirely possible that Asura voters have already covered all their other priorities with their vote slots and tossed Asura in to make sure Capcom got the point on that front. It will be interesting to see if that carries over to Capcom-Unity’s run-off poll.
As far as gods go… we already have a few that can arguably take on super-beings as is, and I think a few of them have been mentioned before. Amaterasu is the obvious one, you can make a decent case for Dante and/or Trish, and Wesker has a fair shot of it too. I could even make a case for Zero, Firebrand, Arthur, Vergil, and Morrigan. It’s not like Capcom’s side is bereft of extremely powerful beings. Now, if you want one more, cool; that’s fair enough. I’m just saying that Capcom’s side of the roster already has people who can plausibly, when confronted with ‘notably above human, notably above even the average superhuman’ entities, can plausibly say “Pffft… I got this.”
On the matter of Marvel doing a good job of marketing as is… of course. And they should be. They absolutely should be treating Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as an advertising vessel, a chance to grow their brand and tap into a whole new market; people who haven’t paid attention to their products since the 90s, but might be drawn back in once we see the new stuff. Marvel is doing the right thing as a business by showing us their ‘new hotness’ rather than honoring 90s-oriented voting, votes for characters who no longer exist in their current form, and so on. Sure, the Jubilee fan in me is shedding tears over that… but I have basically come to accept that Marvel is being smart, and ignoring my 90s memories which aren’t making any revenue for them in 2011 is the way to go.
Cygnus281: As far as nostalgia voting goes, I strongly suspect a lot of us here on SRK simply do not follow current comics. I know I don’t. It stands to reason that when asked for mandatory votes on Marvel roster, they will reference their last known set of information (“the 90s Marvel products” and “MvC2” in this case) and work from there. I strongly believe that some sort of primer on current Marvel would do voters a lot of good. As it is, I keep having to ask comic-following friends for info. Every time there has been a Marvel character video, I wind up asking them, “Who the hell is (name here) and why should I care?”, then they explain and I go “Oh. Cool! Yeah, they’re a neat addition to the roster, then.”
It’s easy to say such nostalgia votes are dumb. It is, and I agree; Marvel has made it very clear they are flat-out ignoring our pleasant memories of the 90s because they can’t time-travel to make additional money off of our 90s-era selves. We can shout for 90s-era versions of characters, characters who were relevant in the 90s but aren’t now, etc. nonstop and Marvel is not going to listen to us. Reading current information will be the key to us casting more intelligent votes in regard to UMvC3’s Marvel roster. We have made our voice heard; Marvel is saying “…No. We’re not doing that. We’re here to make money and raise brand awareness. Come along with us or be left behind,” and my goal from here on is to steer Marvel’s current behavior in directions that are sensible for them and also please me.
I am currently in my final year of studying Business Marketing and think Asura would be a win-win for everyone but the guys who think product placement and in game advertising is “dumb” despite Marvel doing this with their characters, Strange being one who was highly voted for and rumored to have a movie soon. Gameplay comes first and Asura seems like he could be a unique addition.
Capcom would generate more interest in a game they have on the way and people are interested in him and think he would bring something to the game. There’s nothing wrong with listening to suggestions, the Asura team liked the thought of Asura in MvC3 and support it, seems like if you can convince MvC3 team to add him, it could be reality. Nothing wrong with playing favorable odds and it’s way better than voting for characters on the “Can’t use” list Capcom said they got from Marvel.
Fixed it a little bit.
Other than that, agreed.
What people don’t seem to understand is that Psylocke has changed in her powerset.
Most people want COTA Psylocke and COTA Psylocke is no more in the comics. Marvel is on top of this game unlike before (still don’t understand Wolverine’s Fatal Claw)
Psylocke may return but there is a VERY HIGH probability she won’t be the same gameplaywise.
If you don’t care about that and still want her fan service, then is all good.
If she would have a new moveset, I’d be even more interested. New characters ftw!
I only want Poison and Invisible Woman at this point.
Invisible Woman a little more than Poison.
Less telephaty moves but still there, adding telekinesis moves and flight along her ninja style.
I wished Gamora or Elektra were voted over Psylocke for the ninja chick (especially Gamora) but I guess lack of knowledge of Marvel and past games nostalgia prevailed.
Meh!
Gamora/Elektra >>> Psylocke.
Just give me Psylocke. I want a ninja lady to go with my lady wolverine.
On a serious note, though, think about it. T. Rex could be a giant character, (And also, due to being a dinosaur, he could make the ancient ones trio of ammy/shuma/rex possible. That’s epic, if nothing else.), who has limited mobility and is just a pile of command normals with a special or two. Before you guys say “NEMESIS GODAMNIT!”, remember that his hitbox would easily dwarf Nemesis, and he could focus on being a heavy duty rushdown character instead of messing around with this rocket launcher nonsense. If he needs an OTG, he can stomp on them. Also, this:
Nemesis: "WOAROARGH!"
T. Rex: "ROARR!"
Nemesis: “Holy Shit!”
So…why do people want Sigma again? I’m just curious. I don’t see him adding anything new to the game, but maybe I’m just not on the same page as the rest of the Sigma fans. A character whose gimmick in every game he’s ever been in (aside from X8 I suppose) has been “I blow up then I come back fuckhuge and pissed off?” Sounds a little too similar to someone, doesn’t it? And traditionally aren’t all of his ultimate forms completely stationary? I just don’t see what other people see in him. He’s got a Sword user form, a Wolverine with projectiles and real teleports form, a Cap/Task form, his X4 form with scythe control, and a bunch of fairly bland forms after that aside from X5 and X6 final forms (which can’t move anywhere).
“Gene: It is interesting that he maintained such strong support even after we heard about Iron Fist. I am not familiar with Gene and so am unqualified to comment on him in any real depth, but it will be interesting to see if this support persists once people have time to try Iron Fist out. Are they as similar as others have speculated? Does Gene offer meaningful differences? I would love to hear more from Gene supporters on this!”
Cmon man, a cursory glance at God Hand would be enough to tell you that any comparison to Iron Fist is silly. They have nothing in common outside of being martial arts based. It’s like saying there’s no need for Dante because Taskmaster also has a sword.
Baseball bats, balls, frying pans, giant buddha palms, ball bustin’, pummelin’, meditation and blasting energy from his fire breathing fists. I defy you to find a character that can do more than Gene.
Congrats and hope you do well with future endeavors as far as your schooling is concerned. As for the bolded part I was the one who asked the CC2 team about it on the stream. I was happy they thought it was as good an idea as I did.
Gene vs Ironfist would be bad as all hell. I actually voted for Gene but think I may have wasted my vote seeing as he was a Lock.
I don’t get why Bayonetta didn’t receive that many votes. One would think she fits a lot of the prerequisites for a great character.
- In the game she has moves out the yin/yang. Lots to choose from.
- She’d be throwing out a lot of quotes to all the women and to Dante and Trish
- Bayonetta 2 is coming out pretty soon
Anyway, Cyclops should be a no-brainer on the Marvel side. I have no problem with him being a Marvel shoto. His character is more important with his ties to all the X-Men (especially Jean).
I also really would like just to either beef up the AAs we have or add new ones that are good. But I don’t need Psylocke for that. I just liked how fun she was to use. But the way she is in the comic, she would have to change from what she was in MvC2.
This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:
Is Bayonetta not owned by Capcom or something?
Bayonetta is Platinum/Sega
Take a look at the box. You see the part where it says “SEGA” on it?
