UMvC3 DLC Poll Results Discussion [aka Wishlist Thread]

From everything I’ve seen the answer appears to be “Has an assist that leads to terrifying combos in MVC2” and “has an enormous, heaving rack that would cripple a real person.”

DefaultCamera hit some of the more cynical points. I’d like to expand on them, however.

Some people feel that if her assist was great in MvC2, it’d be great in MvC3 for said combos. This strikes me as silly; we’ve seen that returning MvC2 cast are all over the place in terms of performance in MvC3. For all we know, the assist could be terrible in this game.

Others legitimately liked her overall move-list and feel it contributes something good to the game. Excellent! This is what people should be doing, and it should be one of their top priorities in considering DLC.

A few people have outright admitted the ‘heaving breasts’ thing did it for them. This disappoints me, but at least they are being honest.

Some are genuine fans of the comic character and her current storylines. This is also very good, as it provides an immediate personal attachment for them. I felt the same way about Frank West, liking both his story in Dead Rising 1 and his movelist in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Thus, I win all around; I feel good playing a character whose story and general motif I genuinely like, and I have fun with his fighting game interpretation. Amaterasu pleased me on similar grounds, and I’m hoping that DLC will let us add Nina to that list some day.

breast

She got the tig-o-bitties. :o…

But people say she’s not the same as she was in comics (COTA/MVC2 gamewise). Meaning she’ll have entirely moveset.

So… if she’s not the same as she was before, what can she do now that makes her different before? :o

She used to blow now she just sucks.

Hahahaha! I laughed out loud.

…yeah i could see as much…but what about morrigan, phoenix, and storm. Don’t they have breasts? 0_o

Yeah but no butt floss

Don’t say Felicia, too creepy

If there is any truth to this, that is just plain laziness on your part Capcom. I enjoyed my Megaman in MvC 1&2. To see X all polished and new in 3d would be a dream.

Walsru: Like you have any room to talk regarding ‘creepy’, when your avatar text (not the image, the member-status text) appears to be some weird hybrid of Kirby and Kyubey. Which is an awesome idea, mind you! …It’s just still creepy.

Hello?: Buster Cannon and Magnet Man offered some fairly in-depth thoughts on this earlier. One of the more plausible theories that came up was that the devs might not actually be all that familiar with X, and possibly only passingly played one or two of them. If that is true, then this would suggest they’re just ignorant of the character and how easily different he could be made from regular Mega Man. For that matter, how different he’d be from Arthur. …Then again, you can make regular Mega Man quite different from Arthur too. It’s not hard; even if you completely leave out all the enemy-absorption weapons (and Mega Man did have these in MvC1 and 2, which you probably know all too well), that still has you looking at tons of choices just based on his movement modes, chargeable gun (Zero has this too, I grant), partners and their gear (Why not give him Proto Man’s shield? Or find ways to work in Beat, Rush, Roll, Dr. Light, etc.?). We’ve been over it at length in the thread, and interestingly enough? I don’t think any of this matters.

Honestly, my personal opinion is that Capcom is playing the fool right now. I have no evidence to back that up, but I think that one or two months after UMvC3 ships… Capcom will ‘suddenly’ have a ‘change of heart’ and announce they’ll develop X as DLC. There will be plenty of quick statements saying that the dedication and sincerity of the fans caused them to reconsider this and they’ll give us what we’ve demanded, power to the consumers and thanks for your devoted loyalty to the Mega Man brand etc. etc. It’d be a slick victory to make up for all their recent stumbles, and definitely a smart move both to smooth over PR blunders and wringing plenty of extra cash out of the game.

I am convinced X is ‘in’, they’re just waiting for a smart time to release him. He’ll probably be off-disc DLC as Capcom would want this story to be as convincing as possible, and having unlock keys or trace assets lying around on the disc wouldn’t help. You’ll recall that people found partially functional Jill and Shuma on the regular MvC3 disc, and despite the people making those discoveries going out of their way to make very clear that the characters were clearly not finished (Shuma was very, very close, however)… readers on all sorts of websites began crying that this was ‘on-disc DLC.’ I imagine this time around Capcom will be much smarter about hiding X DLC.

At this point, I’ve kind of had my fill of X talk. Once I’m more alert/conscious and not running on three hours sleep a day, I may try my hand at an example Nina movelist to show people what I’m envisioning with her. I doubt Capcom themselves will use it, and that’s fine; this is something I’m hoping to show all of you and hope you’ll see why there has been a growing demand for her in polls. Not a huge demand yet, but she has gone from “…Who?” to “Consistently placing in the polls. At lower ends, but consistently there.” That’s pretty good progress, and I’m hoping to build upon it.

I personally would love to see Date Masamune in UMvC3. I heard he placed highly in the MvC3 DLC Polls in Japan(If that is incorrect however, I can accept that.)

He had a pretty solid move set in the Sengoku Basara X fighter, and the beat 'em up games probably have him doing a lot more crazy stuff. I know a lot of people say there’s enough Sword users in the game, but Date uses both sword techniques and lightning like techniques, which I think could possibly bring something new to the game.

This is just me though, if others disagree that’s fine.

I think they’re avoiding Basara characters because they’re historical figures.

Date Masamune placed #1 in the Pixiv poll’s Capcom side, I believe. By a commanding margin, too. Several other Sengoku-era personalities, esp. those featured in the Sengoku Basara games, also showed up.I’m pretty sure Date Masamune also placed in at least one US poll too.

However, xesaie brings up the same thing I’ve heard at various times. If it’s true, I suspect all this support may amount to nothing. This is of course an ‘if’ and I don’t know the truth of the matter, but the sheer amount of calls for Sengoku-era people to be in MvC3, with Capcom games like Sengoku Basara as the basis… combined with no such characters showing up, suggests to me this could be as hopeless as calls for Eddie Brock version Venom.

As far as “another sword user” goes, I’m conflicted on this. On one hand, I do agree that swords are over-represented… not just in MvC3, but in fictional works in general. It ties into the ‘sword as symbol of heroism’ thing most cultures in the world have to some degree or another, though. Heroes use swords. In a way, it’s a pity; I’d love to see other weapons get some representation, such as the European halberd and various ‘pollaxe’/‘poleaxe’ weapons.

On the other, I have no room to talk. I support Ryu (Breath of Fire) in UMvC3 and he’s basically one in a long line of 90s RPG Heroes With Swords, right over there in the same crowd as Chrono/Crono, Cecil, Cloud, and so on. My hypocrisy is obvious: “Yeah, yeah, the hell with swords. We’ve got too many of them. Except for my guy. He’s cool, let him in.” It’s part of why I don’t throw too much of a fit about others wanting sword-wielding characters in the game, because I know if I’m any more outspoken in my thoughts on this I’ll just be a jackass.

Not only that, but ‘sword’ does not imply ‘plays like the others using this same class of weapon’ anyway. Historical examples are obvious: The western rapier has only a few similarities to the Japanese katana in real-world sword use. Going into video games, the distinction becomes even more clear when you look at UMvC3’s sword-wielding roster. It includes:

Amaterasu
Arthur (Throws multiple sword-like objects)
Chris (Definitely stretching the definition of ‘sword’; he has a knife)
Dante
Deadpool
Possibly Frank West (Uses swords in Dead Rising. Unsure if he’s keeping his TvC moveset or not in UMvC3, thus listing)
Sorta-kinda in a generous way, Haggar (The sword and pipe were basically the same weapon in Final Fight. I admit this is a stretch)
Hsien-ko (Uses some sword-like objects)
Strider Hiryu
Taskmaster
Trish (She’s using some sort of weird Klingon sword, but it counts)
Vergil
Zero

Even if you remove the ones where I’m clearly stretching the definition or we’re not certain they’ll have a sword, the fact is that most of these characters play extremely differently from one another. The only ones I would say that have major similarities are Zero and Hiryu, and I’m willing to let that go because they’re certainly more different from one another than Ryu and Akuma were in regular MvC3 or previous iterations in the Vs series. Even if you don’t forgive that, nearly every other sword user plays in a unique way compared to one another.

“Has a sword” should only have a little bearing upon whether a character gets in or not. Especially since if you want to get silly about it, I can throw it back at anyone by saying: “Another person who attacks using their fists and feet? How many of those do we need in UMvC3?” This is of course stupid, and the obvious counter is “Yeah, but they all play very differently”, but that just helps illustrate the point.

Why exactly would that make a difference? I heard that somewhere else, but I’m not sure what Capcom’s reasoning is.

I really hope it isn’t because of that. I was pretty sure the historical figures they’re based on are open domain anyways. As in, they are characters anyone can take and make something with them to make money, like Frankenstein or Dracula here in America. Although, I remember them saying they couldn’t use a few of the Onimusha characters since some of the family members of some of the historical characters in that game are still around and have to be payed when using said character.

As for the sword thing, I now realize me wanting date in and expecting he won’t get in since he’s a sword wielder is a bit silly. From all the ones you posted, I can safely say he’s different enough, the only one he’s close to being Trish. But Trish uses her electricity type specials as traps or to keep away, also she carries a huge sword. Meanwhile, from what I recall of the SBX fighter, Date could use his electric specials to pressure opponents or to keep away, and everything else were more melee-ish in nature. Also, instead of one big sword, he uses six different swords at the same time. This could bring a lot of ideas into the way he fights.

But again, this is just me. I like Date, think he’s cool, and I think he should be in UMvC3.

I am on my way to bed, but after watching Iron Fist’s videos… I wanted to raise a discussion topic and will be eager to see what you have to say when I return later today. Gene fans, as a matter of honest inquiry, I ask:

Does Iron Fist satisfy what you were hoping for from Gene? If not, what is missing? This topic is of great interest to me, since it may influence which characters I support for DLC in the future (not that I’m anyone special, mind you; this shouldn’t imply that I’m able to pull strings at Capcom or so on… I can’t. All I can do is write letters, cast votes, etc.; same as you). I actually suspect you’re not accepting the whole “Iron Fist = Gene substitute” thing and may have some good points to bring up, so I’d love to hear them.

While I remain interested in the Gene question, I wanted to post a quick update… apparently Capcom-Unity’s poll has been tallied. Whoever did it utterly ignored the weighted voting system, but whatever: http://www.capcom-unity.com/marvelvscapcom/go/thread/view/102977/28270731/UMvC3_DLC_survey_results

I’ll offer some comments on these. This is just “what immediately comes to mind”, so if I miss something, it doesn’t mean I’m trying to snub that particular character/series/entity. Feel free to bring them up.

Marvel Side:

Eddie Brock’s Venom: If you’re hearing a voice going “unnnhghhhnn! bluuuuhhh!” right now, that’s me; I’m vomiting over how 500+ people voted for a character/entity that doesn’t exist in current Marvel storylines, when everything Marvel has done lately shows their focus is solely on current products for reasons I’ve outlined previously. This is one of the rare cases where I will outright call something a wasted vote because there is basically a 0% chance Marvel will heed this request because it runs completely contrary to good business sense.

Ms. Marvel: Cool. She has consistent support in multiple polls. Hopefully we’ll see something come of this.

Squirrel Girl: I got a good laugh out of this. It’s basically the equivalent of voting for Dan, and I am legitimately pleased to see roughly 170 people had a sense of humor strong enough to want a character like that on the roster. It’s not something I would have voted for, but you’ll never see me look down on it. ‘Trolling’ characters like these are good, fun things to have in a roster so long as it’s limited to just one or two.

Songbird: Very interesting. I only recently heard of her and have only a vague overview of who she is, but what I heard sounds neat. I’m glad to see she placed this well.

Nightcrawler: Don’t we already have him in the game? He changed his name to Wesker and took the liberty of grabbing a gun on his way to the fight, but it seems like ‘teleport-heavy melee showboat character’ is already covered well. What are these voters seeing that I’m not?

Capcom:

Mega Man Franchise Votes: Seven of the twenty slots are from this franchise; X, Classic Mega Man, Mega Man .Exe, Sigma, Bass.Exe, Roll, and Volnutt/Trigger. That’s about one third of the poll results for one franchise. If Capcom doesn’t listen to that kind of overwhelming fan demand, I will be genuinely shocked. I continue to subscribe to the belief that we’ll see them have that pre-planned ‘sudden change of heart’ a few months after UMvC3 releases, and they’ll say they’re working on X as DLC. For now they’ll continue to play the fool.

Gene: I’d like to hear input on him since we now have the Iron Fist trailer. My ‘mental prototype Gene’ doesn’t play quite like Iron Fist does, but I assembled that prototype in my head over the span of about half an hour while watching reference/research videos several of you pointed me to. In other words, I’m only marginally aware of the character. Those of you who are real fans of Gene, I ask: Does Iron Fist satisfy what you wanted out of him, or are you set on getting Gene added too? If you aren’t happy with what Iron Fist offered, why? What does Gene need to offer that he doesn’t? This is a legitimate inquiry, I’m not trying to be hostile; I truly wish to know how you feel.

Jon Talbain: Something of an oddity. I think he has placed in one other poll (perhaps GameFAQs?), but not this high. At the very least, I don’t recall him being popular outside of C-U. Can someone check me on that? I remember getting a mean laugh out of it when a Jon Talbain supporter began mocking the NeoGAF and SRK polls, trying to make it seem like his voting bloc was far larger and more meaningful than it really is. Placing this high in a poll is significant, but nowhere near as big as he was trying to act like.

Dictator: This one baffles me. People wanted a Street Fighter villain, I know. Here’s the thing; Dictator has been in several prior Versus games and I honestly cannot recall the last time I saw a human player use him. I’m willing to call his overall design ‘unsuited for the series’ at this point. It’s one thing for a character to be unpopular in one entry in the series (such as happened with Frank West because his moves need serious tweaking to work; he sucks in TvC; here’s to hoping he gets those tweaks in UMvC3!), but another for them to be consistently unpopular. If people really want a SF villain, there are tons of choices we could try. Juri, Gill, arguably Urien, Seth, and I’m sure plenty of others would have stood out as good characters to try. It honestly seems to me like many of these voters went “Yeah, we need a SF villain! …But who? The only one immediately coming to mind is Dictator.”

Juri: Good call. Fills the SF Villain need, and has a very diverse play-style. She is a fantastic choice and I kind of hope she makes it in as DLC.

Ryu from Breath of Fire: Cool result. Ryu was also placing in the previous MvC3 poll, if I recall, but he seems to have placed a little higher this time. Sadly, I cannot find the old C-U poll, it seems to have been deleted since it’s no longer directly relevant. Still, I am encouraged to see he has gained some popularity.

Nina: I am very happy with this. She went from “who the hell is Nina?” to “consistently placing in polls.” Sure, she placed in the lower end most of the time, but that’s not bad for someone who started out so unknown. Between her and Ryu, I’m hoping Breath of Fire will become more prominent in Capcom’s plans going forward.

Tessa: A visually cool design, but I’m not entirely convinced and did some research. I watched a Red Earth single-player run of her, and I have a question. Even a fairly leveled-up Tessa (for those unaware, players must use Tessa extensively and gain levels, like in a RPG, to unlock her full movelist) seemed fairly Shoto-like. Fireballs and uppercuts seemed to form the bulk of her moves, with a divekick mixed in. I must be missing something; what did you see that I wasn’t shown in Youtube videos?

Cammy: I remain baffled by this. X-23 handles most of her play-style well.

Ken: Placed 21st by one vote, so I’m including him in my commentary. Simply put: Why. We already have two direct Shotos and at least one or two more who come close enough to count (primarily, Captain America. And I say that as someone who has Cap on one of my teams in MvC3). It disappoints me that some people can be so hungry for minor variations of the same play-style, favoring that over genuinely new experiences. That Ken managed to place over Batsu is kind of a let-down.

Chuck Greene: Is a fascinating study in the rise and fall of a character’s popularity. He went from placing in the last poll, to being 46th (bordering on ‘beneath notice’), in the span of just several months. I wonder why this is? He likely would have played very differently from Frank West, focusing on improvised weapons rather than zombie summons. I kind of like Chuck so I’m a bit disappointed by this result, but oh well. It’s still really interesting to see just how far he fell.

On the issue of Nightcrawler, just off the top of my head I can think of several tactics that make him deadlier than Wesker.

One reason I don’t think he’s in the game is because of that Teleporting ability. It would be the central focus of his offense (like Wesker,) but it could also work as an attack as his 'ports leave brimstone smoke behind, which could work as a jab stun. Plus, it would automatically make him the best mobile fighter on Marvel’s side, seeing that Deadpool’s Teleport works 2/3, Dormammu’s too slow to use his effectively, and Jean’s can be downright predictable (and punishable) at times.

Also, Kurt Wagner has frequently used swords in his fights, and adding another swordsman on top of Dante, Vergil, Zero, Taskmaster, Deadpool and Trish could be considered overkill. Shame too, because he’s one of the few X-Men that deserves to have more press and time in the spotlight.

Why does nobody vote for Loki, he would be awesome and has a great chance of getting in due to Thor and the Avengers movies.

Also Cable is coming back to life soon, so maybe he will be considered again

You do know that nightcrawler is dead in the comics right?
