Thing is, Volnutt plays nothing like Zero. Aside from the charge shots (which don’t even work the same), they’re two different characters entirely. And yeah, if Volnutt’s not a complex TvC character, I don’t know who is.
I should have guessed that once I poked my head in here all I’d see was MegaMan wishlist crap.
I… think it’s trying to communicate with us. Stay back, everyone. I (think I) know this language!
Looks at AceKillah, experimentally asking…
S.T.A.R.S…?
Nina…?
Pika… chu?
Nah, I’m just messing with you. If you’ve got something more to add regarding Gene, feel free.
Actually, most of the Mega Man posters in here have been pretty civil and rational. Plus several other characters of note have been discussed, including Tessa, Nina, Gene, Asura, Psylocke, and I think a few others. Is there someone you’d like to discuss that isn’t Mega Man related and had a strong showing in the poll? Feel free to mention them.
Gene!!???
 But seriously Mr. X seems to have the Gene information covered so I will leave it to him.
Ballbuster should be qcb+S and cause dizzy
Spanking should be his backthorw.
His intro is him struggling to reach the kick me sign on his back.
His win cutscene can be this dance
Its beautiful. cries
I hope Devil May Sly ends up as his theme but when you activate his godhand super broncobuster begins to play.
I’ll admit I’m very surprised to see most of you focusing on the silly aspects of Gene, when Wright caught a lot of flak from some folks when he was first announced… on the basis that he’d be too silly. Oh well, most people seem to have gotten over that and I’m all for Gene being ridiculous. I’ll even add something: He better yell “burn!” a lot, just like he did in those reference videos you guys showed me. …He is yelling ‘burn’, right?
I’m also amused that you have no shortage of ideas how to implement him; that’s a very good sign when dedicated fighting game players can see practical (and/or impractical, in a few cases) ways to get him working in the MvC3 engine. I feel the same way about Nina (any game’s version offers tons of options), and I’d draft up a fan movelist if I thought it’d do much good.
I second the opinion of the man with the god like manicure
dude you are freakin awesome
I think X or Gene should have been in over Phoenix Wright, and Phoenix Wright is the guy who is being requested for DLC’s. Not Megaman-whatever or Gene. I seriously think Phoenix Wright will be all nice at the beginning but will be ignored after 2 months. I think all his supporters in gamefaqs will leave him for other characters, or leave for other games.
I think Phoenix Wright won’t be anything great and the people who are uttering “he maybe Godtier/Top tier” in gamefaqs need to go back to playing SSB. Sorry, i know there are many who are happy about him getting in, and thats great for you… but i really do hope he is not going to be an ignored -hayato slot.
Speaking of Hayato, I wish he’d have made it as DLC. He was a pretty decent character and the plasma series was a neat gimmick.

Denoku: Thank you! I try.
Cisco: That may be true. Who can say? Maybe he will turn out to be competitive and viable, and see regular play. Maybe he won’t, and all his old supporters will go away after a few months. Whichever of those things happens however… Capcom got their sales figures out of it. This is actually one thing they’re handling very intelligently. They’ve announced UMvC3 well ahead of time so the general public can get the anger out of their systems early, and they’ve been pacing their character reveals accordingly.
Here’s how I figure it went: Capcom knew the competitive crowd (that’s us) would be the most accepting of this update, so they announced the game (angering most crowds) and then immediately pleased us by announcing Strider Hiryu’s inclusion at the same time. So now most of us are cool with it, and we were pretty easily won over. Smart move, dealing with the easiest crowd first. Follow it up with some interesting public playtest builds, and many of us were convinced UMvC3 would be worthwhile.
Capcom probably planned to wait a few months for the anger to die down, and then announce the ‘mainstream interest’ character, Phoenix Wright. Of course, their silly mistake in leaving art files lying around on the server foiled this plan very early. They proceeded with the reveal-video schedule as planned though, and Wright will be among the later ones announced (I, like many others, believe TGS in a few days would be a good time to do this). That way, the general non-competitive audience goes from “angry” to “no longer cares”… and can be brought back up to “excited” by revealing Wright. From Capcom’s perspective, this is a good way to generate sales. If those players vanish two months from now… well, that will bring up fascinating questions about what kind of installed userbase and demographics Capcom should target for DLC. If they stick around, Capcom’s way forward becomes much easier to predict.
That said, I don’t think this sort of factionalism (competitive crowd vs. casuals, insofar as character interests go) is a good thing or even universally true. I consider myself a competitive player, and am genuinely eager to see what kind of playstyle Wright will offer. I’m similarly curious about Nova, Rocket Raccoon, what they’re really doing with Frank West (maybe it will be a TvC copy-paste after all? If so, fine with me), Iron Fist, and so on. If Wright turns out to be a great character that helps contribute to long-term interest in UMvC3, I’ll be very happy indeed. If he turns out to be the character that fills out my current ‘theory team’ of Frank West (TvC copy-paste assumption) and Amaterasu, awesome; I’ll put him on the team.
Hayato was the 3rd weakest character in MVC2, lol at you thinking he was decent. He was the character that i thought was bad ass (when i was new to the game) but was completely underworked.
I think they should make a CVS3 and put him and some of the other characters that didn’t make it in here.
@red rick, i catch your drift. There is a possibility i’m wrong, and i hope so too… but a huge part of me feels he will be an ignored slot after a couple of months and one of the weakest or the weakest character in the game. He’s just for laughs. It’s just a prediction of mine that can be wrong in the end though.
Well… some people don’t base their character desires on the assumption that a character’s power in MvC2 is indicative of their power in MvC3. There are some cases where it was true, such as Magneto being an excellent character in both games. Sentinel was too, albeit in different ways in each game. On the other hand, Tron got arguably worse (at least on point; her assist was clearly very good in this game). Wolverine became one of the best characters in MvC3 based on our current understanding of it. Storm became much weaker (not that she’s terrible in MvC3, just nowhere near as dominant as she was in MvC2). With such a wild set of examples to go by, for all we know Hayato in MvC3 would wind up being the best character ever, 10-0 matchups across the board.
Going by past performance probably isn’t the best idea, since you can always ask: “Okay… this character sucked in the last game. Can we do anything to make him not terrible in this one, while keeping generally true to his existing design and play-style?” One need only look at Akuma from MvC2 to MvC3 to see the answer is yes; yes you certainly can. It’s entirely possible to just tweak details, add new properties to existing moves, and so on to wind up with a viable character.
Also, a CvS3 would be awesome. It might be a staggering undertaking at this point however, since Capcom clearly can’t rely on decade old sprites to fill half the cast anymore. I wonder if they would go for it in today’s market, thus. I kind of hope they would; CvS2 was a great game for much of its ‘life’, and I imagine CvS3 would be similarly fun.
I’m worried something cool will be left out with Gene like grovel orhis dodging or hisShaolin Blast
Ideas
Hypers:
-Dragon Kick - Invincible Start Up Hyper for a reversal, very unsafe on block, wall bounce?
-100 Fist - Would act in the same vein as Lunch Rush where the it hits a lot for little damage so it is barely affected by scaling in long combos (except for the last hit).
-Gene Combination - for those that played the game, they would get it. It would be a tribute to his pummel actions, like rapid fire punches, the flurry of kicking then suplex into the stomps. Level 3?
-God Hand Unleashed - Boost Hyper like Berserker Charge. Gene would go easy on you and not go completely invincible and unblockable, just get a lot faster and his special moves would be the level 2 variations (if he had them in game) which just mean hurt a lot more and contain fire.
Specials:
So many to choose from but I would expect
-Ball Buster(shoutouts to not working on females)
-Shockwave would be his projectile
For a taunt or if Gene stands idle for a while I want see this
I have this feeling that Capcom finds Gene TOO gimmicky, he’s one of those characters that seems perfect until you start really working on it (also small actual fanbase).
I bring up Megaman to counter your fanbase argument.
I bring up Hsein Ko and Arthur as characters who probably sounded better on paper than in the game. He would be rushdown so he’s already 10 times better than both of them.
MMX is excluded because he’s look terrible, and they had better ideas for a similar moveset.
Gene is fringe and basically a brawler, of which they have plenty already.
MM is worth bringing up though, because its kind of the same thing, I think. Fans of the character want him in and can bring up really in-depth and often convincing arguments for their inclusion, but the real/basic reason for wanting the character is that you like it.
Which is fine of course… but being liked in game X doesn’t mean it’ll actually work out in Game Y. You can make awesome arguments and a movelist for any possible character really, doesn’t necessarily match the needs and difficulties of the game.
There’s a lot of characters I like from either side (Dudley and Q) but I picked Gene because I think he would fit the crazy fast paced fighting engine of MvC3 and he would be a new face to the MvC series.
What’s wrong with wanting a character you like in this game?
Your point is the entire purpose of the Versus series. You take characters from either franchise you think would work, give them fighting game movesets and watch what happens. You think the dev team didn’t suggest characters they’d like to see in the game?
Gene almost made it in with Megaman. They were both in the last rounds of internal voting so there is some guys on the inside who also think he’d be a good addition.
