The glitch here is not that the ultras are unblockable, but that blocking doesn’t work during the single frame when they stand up (this is why jump-in dive-kicks often get me on recovery even though I was holding down-back). The person who said it was hitstun that allowed the ultra to penetrate was correct. They stand up right inside the hitbox of the plasma and can’t escape it. It should be called unblockable missile glitch.
Yea, but the title said “Ultra Unblockable,” so I just went with it even though it’s the projectile that’s not being properly blocked.
I know Guile can’t backdash if you time the boom correctly, the same probably goes for Sagat. You probably did the SB too late, so that it didn’t hit as deep. If you do that, they will just dash right through the SB instead of getting hit by it mid-air.
The way I understand it is that it has nothing to do with waking up. It has to do with the game not recognizing inputs during Ultra/Super freeze under certain conditions. The reason it was only discovered now was because the only way to require someone to block on the same frame as the Ultra freeze is to have them recover into a meaty projectile. Theoretically, this should apply to resets as well but I’m not sure if such a setup exists yet.
The effect that you’re referring to actually seems to be more of a hitbox/ambiguous crossup issue. That’s how Chun Li’s unblockable df.hk setup works in the corner against Ken/Ryu.
I don’t know, I haven’t tried it for the others yet, worked on this for a whole day and was exausted. for Sagat’s unblockable it worked with Chun and Rose, they have incredible gdlk back dashes. You also have to kind of mash the FA buttons really fast to increase your chances, once you see the flash and the blue ring you can just mash the back dash to escape. I would assume you can do it with everyone except Seth, I have to see the Seth video again, Maybe not Ryu either since he is throwing a Metsu Hadoken full screen.
It’s just Sagats freakin Knee in the Ultra is so Godlike that other characters can’t back dash from it fast enough. If you see part 2 on the video how Sagat can counter Sagats unblockable, he Ultra’d him from half screen and still all the hits connected in time. When I did that I just shook my head.
i wounder if the arcade release is going to see these unblockables?
Was watching the NSB stream last night and it was Eita (Ken) vs. Hisshou (Sagat) and Eita attempted the unblockable but missed it and then Hisshou threw him and did the unblockable on him lol.
where can i see a recording of that?!
i need to see!!!
If it was part of the tourney it’ll be here:
This confirms that there are several different timings for the UB… even on the same characters. I’d like to mention that yesterday while I was setting up Rose’s UB, that there’s a timing/recording that works on a good portion of the cast (Ryu, Ken, Chun, Guile etc) but doesn’t work on Sakura. HOWEVER there’s ALSO a timing that works on Sakura AND the portion of the cast I was talking about earlier. Weird.
Anyway, Doopliss: I just got those timings you’re talking about and may have found something interesting (at least with Sagat).
Okay for Guile in that situation, you can do st. jab (I didn’t mash it… just tried to do it on the first frame after wakeup). That will avoid the SB and allow you to block the Ultra.
Now for SAGAT… I actually found that you can focus absorb the SB and backdash to dodge the Ultra. Timing is VERY strict, but it works.
I didn’t try this with Guile or the other characters yet but if it’s possible with Sagat’s backdash after focus then it may be possible for a lot more characters. I’m going to go and try it with Sakura now.
Edit: Yup, Sakura can dodge it too using focus absorb on the SB and backdashing to dodge the Ultra… double edit: so can Guile.
Triple Edit: Okay here’s a list of the characters confirmed to be able to Focus and backdash Seth’s Ultra Unblockable setup:
Can use:
Sagat
Guile
Ryu
Ken
Sakura
Rufus
Fuerte
Abel*
Bison (Dictator)
Honda
Zangief
Akuma
Gouken
Blanka
Chun Li (Really strict timing)
Cannot use:
Viper (1)
Rose (1)
Balrog (Boxer) (1)
Gen (Both stances) (2)
Vega* (Claw) (3)
Seth (4)
Dhalsim (4)
Fei Long (1)
Dan (5)
Cammy (1)
Alternative for the Characters that can’t use focus backdash:
- Do a normal backdash and eat the SB while airborne instead.
- Use EX Oga instead
- Do a PPP backflip instead
- Teleport instead
- Koryuken instead
- Abel and Vega don’t actually absorb the Sonic boom but they still go into focus stance (if they were to try and block, they would still be caught in the unblockable though). Abel can still backdash out of his focus stance to avoid the Ultra, but I don’t think Vega can.
… that should help take some of the guess work out of this situation for some characters. At least everyone has a way out now… except for Random Select… he’s fucked.
It wasn’t part of the NSB tourney, it was just casual play after the Nationals. Checked the archives and nothing is there, so I’m not sure if it will eventually be uploaded or lost forever.
Cool, so another person (along with uraizen) who verified that doing a standing attack on wakeup can work against some setups/timings?
Glad, I wasn’t just imagining things. How was the fireball positioned when the standing jab worked with Guile? Probably close to his back?
And, I’m assuming that for all the setups you described above, leaving the joystick neutral then blocking post-flash wouldn’t have worked?
Yeah the SB was close to Guile’s back. Just close enough to trap him with the UB, but not enough that he could backdash to get hit by the boom. I was going for what Doopliss described. When I did the setup on Sagat, I was also able to dodge the SB with a cr. Fierce, but he wouldn’t recover quick enough to not eat the Ultra, so I had to try something else.
The post-flash blocking method didn’t work for me when I tried.
anybody has any in game video of these UB being used???
Does anyone know if Dudley can FADC his rose toss? Could he possibly also have an unblockable setup?
Did anyone figure out why this unblockable works? It’s not like the other unblockables because they take the hit AFTER the dark screen. Looks like a different kind of unblockable, maybe due to side confusion like in 3S.
I think I read somewhere that Dudley can’t cancel the rose.
Why hasn’t anybody mentioned Dhalsim’s easiest unblockable set up?
Forward throw, lp fireball as fast as possible FADC Ultra… I can pull it of nearly 100% in training mode, but it seems hard to land in matches, but that might just be me sucking:P
So anyone seen these techniques used successfully at tournaments? How about casual play?
