I say this with no hint of irony or sarcasm. 3S is not a good competitive fighting game. People complain about wakeup Ultras/reversals but then act as if parries are some awesome skilled shit… If you hate reversals you haven’t dealt with parries.
Put it this way. Parries have no whiff animation but > can lead to 50%. So fun. Such good design.
That when someone is guessing parry, you throw them. When they os parry plus throw, you bait the throw and punish. When they crouch tech, you have several good ways to punish it.
IOW they are not comparable to wakeup sf4 reversals because the risk-reward is really bad for guessing parry. When you watch top players in 3s, you see they guess parry very rarely because it’s not worth it. You really only see it as part of option selects or buffered before normals. Which changes the nature of footsies a bit but that’s it really.
And while they don’t have a whiff animation, they aren’t really safe to attempt. You must return to neutral for parry, you can’t roll to block or parry won’t come out. And then you can’t attempt parry again for a set amount of time. You say they don’t have a whiff animation like that somehow makes them safe. They’re just not punished the same way you punish normals.
It’s very situational and not as useful or overbearing as people think. Any high move beats it. Jumping out beats it. Any invincible move beats it. Or you can just tech it.
It usually sees mileage as anti divekick tech or to blow up crouch tech. Very situational and risky besides that.
Here’s stuff that beats just guess wakeup parry:
-throw
-meaty the direction you didn’t guess
delayed normal that hits after parry window
-parried normal into buffered special. So like ken close strong gets parried, he immediately cancels into DP.
Compare that the only one way you can be right with guess parry, and it really doesn’t make sense to be parrying on your wakeup. So everyone blocks or guard jumps or whatever.
I’m talking reversal DP universally, not just SF4. I didn’t say 3S is a bad fighting game relative to SF4, I said 3S is a bad fighting game full stop.
And again. There’s nothing preventing the parrying player from just blocking/teching appropriately. There is nothing stopping them from immediately blocking/teching following an attempt. There’s no recovery, no whiff.
Yeah only scrubs parry, doesn’t take any skill and isn’t risky, especially when they make the right reads and are on point with the timing or read whether they should parry high or low. It’s so annoying how I lose in 3s just for being outplayed. Wakeup mash dp fadc is where the pros at
Missing the point entirely. Emphasis is where the issue lies with 3S. Game is more about “making reads” (read: guessing) than enacting a sound strategy. That’s why it’s shit. Remove parrying and Remy becomes top tier, perfect demonstration of how flawed the mechanic is.
