Characters did get nerfed for justifiable reasons. And then they got nerfed more. And more. And more. Until SF4 tiers were no longer about who’s the best character, but who’s the least mediocre.
Now, is throwing everyone, broken or not, back in the pool the answer? Probably not. And it’s not something that should seriously be pursued for a while because no one would bother exploring the Ultra versions otherwise. But it’s still something that we can actually legitimately research now rather than just wondering.
On top of that, this isn’t the first two years of SF4. There are 6 years of history here right now, 6 years of training, learning the engine and understanding. There are possibly things about older versions of the characters we STILL don’t know about.
You can talk about Stream Monsters getting hype, but they aren’t going to see past Vanilla Sagat/Akuma and AE Twins/Fei and 2012 Cammy.
The ones who will appreciate this the most are those who will actually put down the time to further explore characters with the knowledge of the engine we have now.
Dudley MAYBE in ultra (MAYBE). Vanilla Gouken coming back might be interesting. His combos suck but his zoning game is even better. He did more damage on anti airs and his fireballs do 70 damage instead of 55. Now that people know how he is meant to be played he will be a nightmare for any character he currently plays via zoning. Also his back throw loses the 1pt of damage scaling.
Thawk - fucked
Cody - fucked.
Guy - MAYBE ok in ultra. Otherwise fucked.
Deejay - fucked.
Ultra Guy - Vanilla Gief = probably 2-8 MU.
Ultra Cody - Vanilla Akuma = 1-9 easy. I’m betting he gets sagat style far HK loops on Cody.
Ultra Cody - Vanilla Seth = Literally the only hope for Cody is if Seth drops a combo due to Seth’s 750 health/stun. Otherwise It’s 1-9
Ultra Thawk - Vanilla Sagat = 0-10 unwinnable.
If they are going to go crazy and do this, give us Guilty Gear style gold and shadow modes. +2 on block short Knee Press, that sweet jump Chun Li had a few weeks ago.
Think about something though, Vanilla Akuma is now considered to be pretty much the #1 Character in that version of the game right? but he didn’t have to deal with the twins back then, now he has 2 potential counterpicks. The twins ran rampant in AE because they had no real bad matchups with Gief being one of their possibly even ones, now they have to deal with Vanilla Gief, they may have an actual counterpick and you just made Gief better by making him beat actual relevant characters.
I wouldn’t be too sure on thinking that the game will not balance itself out, tbh.
For once I actually wasn’t going to say anything but since Hyper Fighting is actually a good title on its own merits someone was going to mention it anyway. At least I’m a lot easier to bitch at and hate.
Well it’s between Vanilla Akuma/Sagat/Ryu. Akuma though was only considered to have one bad matchup in Cammy.
The thing is, with all this new knowledge, the Vanilla SF4 matchups could also change…at least slightly. Hard to get around getting destroyed for 500+ because lol Trade TU into Ultra.
Hyper SF4 will be balanced-ish at the top and then horribly imbalanced from then on. The gap between the top tiers and the mid tiers will be VERY large the mid tiers will all be pretty evenly matched IMO and then a HUGE drop for the bottom tiers (Super Cody/Makoto/Thawk/Hakan/Dudley/Guy, Vanilla Dhalsim, Dan (any version), ect ect)
Of course, you can say it falls under the category “Just in case”. I mean they know that if Ultra fails, the customer still keeps their “definite version” which could be USF4 with Edition Select.
And Ultra balancing will still have its place on this mess. Remember these old versions won’t get to have the Ultra mechanics or the ability to double ultra. As a Rose main, Super version won’t render her Ultra version useless. Ultra version has more damage which is necessary in some match ups. Super Version basically gives vortex character’s the middle finger. ( I CAN YOU HEAR YOU FELLOW ROSE PLAYERS MASHING DAT ULTRA 2 ON WAKE UP FROM ACROSS THE PLANET, DON’T LIE).
However, I am in favor of letting the Ultra version only metagame to develop itself before we can even consider crossing this bridge.
Oh, you guys forgot one thing? If this edition select is a console-exclusive feature. Making it a tournament standard can keep japanese players away from our majors. I just thought about this…
Yeah, I think the most interesting thing here is the AE twins going against the top dogs in vanilla. I suspect the best vanilla characters will probably still come out on top with their big damage and health/stun but the twins had some silly tools in AE.
Besides, you can damn sure bet that even if it isn’t the MAIN tournament standard, there will be some ridiculously stacked side tourneys with a lot of money thrown in the pot.
