And Sentinel and She-Hulk and Felicia and Haggar and Tron and Spencer and Hsien-Ko and Morrigan. In fact the only character who has a slower command throw than Hulk is Super-Skrull.
I really hope Hsien-Ko changes. I saw here in Vampire Savior and she kicks some serious tail. At the very least I hope she gets a speed improvement, at least then I would have a better chance of rushdown with here. I also want her super armor animation to change to her Dark Force one in Vampire Savior.
I think Seth Killian is fine for SF commentary since SFIV is boring any ways and he brings up good points for newer players and what not. It’s just for Marvel he don’t really cut it. I like Skisonic blowing it up 90 WPM and James Chen running his mouth about a joke that only a 5 year old would laugh at. More in tune with the breakneck pace of Marvel. Seth’s commentary with Marvel makes you feel more like you’re at a golf tournament.
Like Skisonic and James Chen commentating the DR Ray v Mike Ross Deadpool Fail match would have been way better than S Kill and Ryan Hunter.
Here’s the thing: A game that has 6 top tier characters out of a roster of 38 that take turns dropping steamers on the chests of the rest of the roster isn’t fucking fun, period. The only way it could be considered fun would be if you were actually playing those 6 characters and took sadistic pleasure in destroying players that dared to make picks outside the top tier box. And even if you were having fun, you should still realize that the idea of 6 characters being so overwhelmingly dominant in the roles they play makes picking anyone else to fill those roles pointless, and actually place you at a disadvantage when facing off against a team composed of their superior counterparts. Basically, in vanilla MvC3 why would you choose Felicia, Ryu or Iron Man when Wolverine, Akuma and Magneto are right fucking there?
When there is an obvious gulf between characters and their abilities, the choice between the two becomes one of extreme personal preference. There is literally nothing that the lesser character can do that the greater character can’t do better; with the exception of perhaps a clever gimmick that isn’t worthwhile enough in the long run to warrant them a team slot. To pick Felicia now over Wolverine probably means you are just a Felicia fan (like me) and are willing to pick her despite the fact that Wolverine is the obviously better fighting game character in his present form.
Granted it’s not Dante’s fault that he is so dominant in nearly every aspect, nor is it Hsien-Ko’s fault for being so piss poor in every aspect. It’s Capcom’s fault. What I think you, and players like you need to realize however is that Capcom probably doesn’t want players to keep ignoring a good chunk of the roster. While it is easy to say, ‘Oh they should buff character X and not touch character Y’ odds are that they would have to give those characters something extremely broken in order to even get people to consider tearing themselves away from the current Lords of the Sandbox. I keep using Wolverine as my go-to example - Berserker Slash being an invincible cross-up teleport attack is just* so fucking good* of a tool that it would require Capcom to design moves that were equally amazing (remember - broken!) for all the other rushdown characters in order to make Wolverine shine less.
I don’t expect Capcom to redesign 12+ characters in order for them to begin to compete with Wolverine. That isn’t realistic. It would take far too much time to internally test. What I expect them to do is just nerf Wolverine. Even after Berserker Slash gets changed, he’ll still be really good, just maybe not really fucking good, and that might get people to start venturing out of their boxes when it comes to character picks. The same goes for all of the other top tier characters that are being nerfed, with the possible exception of Phoenix who is getting beat with the nerf bat like a red-headed stepchild. They’ll still be amazing, but they just won’t outshine everyone else as much. That is much better for the game in the long run, and the game will still be fun.
People worrying that UMvC3 will somehow turn out like SSF4 because of the slight shift towards overall balance between the cast need to pick their heads up out of the sand - that will never happen, and the most glaringly obvious reason for this is because Marvel is about a thousand times faster paced of a game than Street Fighter. Quit being stupid and paranoid, it’s embarrassing.
(Far chance of that happen considering it puts another sprite on screen.)
Speaking of–oh, right. I have to stop that.
With regards to Super Skrull, I’m actually looking forward to Super Skrull’s changes so far even though I’ve only heard about a couple. However, between just aerial Meteor Smash and the general air X-Factor change, he seems like he’s twice as threatening, at least in X-Factor 3, where he’s arguably already pretty dumb.
I’m late, but yes. As the two others pointed out, it relates to Secret Invasion, even though he was hardly a part of that storyline as far as I’m aware.
Not the super that I’m talking about, but I’m pretty sure you know which one I was talking about.
Actually, no. Hulk hardly gets used except online, where I pretty always blow him up with Chris.
IWhen I say I find Zero, Tron, Magneto and the like “boring”, it’s because they’re pretty much capable of pretty only one “optimal” combo and that’s all they ever have to do. At least Wesker and Phoenix can vary up how they hit you. If you get by Zero, you know you’re getting killed due to tasting the rainbow; Magneto, the Master of Magnetism, kills you with gravity; Tron hits you for 20 seconds and kills you with legos. They’re boring because you know what’s going to happen every time they hit someone (and because all their supers are boring to watch).
I actually don’t think most people use Hulk anywhere near his potential like DevilJin said, but I have little interest in playing him, so it’s not like I’m going to try to “solve” that problem.
You probably mean UltraDavid–who gets to search for himself again, yay! As for Seth’s commentary, meh, he’s usually better than that term-wise, but it’s not like I watched EVO or anything, so…
That said, DevilJin is probably correct, though I’ve never been a fan of “hype” in most instances, so…
I’d honestly he not have it at all considering how easy it is to end up spending 3 Levels on the worst (Level 3) super in the game. I mean, Spencer only has two and he’s not really missing out because he doesn’t have a Level 3. Storm has 3 level 1 supers and they’re all amazing. A Level 3 isn’t necessary, especially if it’s crappy.
At this point in the game’s life cycle there are no unplayable characters, there are ones that are far less scary, but there are none which can never do anything against the upper characters yet. That said, what I’d consider the ‘if you’re designing a team with none of these characters on it you’re attempting to lose’ is actually pretty large at the moment. This is exactly why I want Viper nerfed however, I feel that as time passes a lot of seemingly viable characters will disintegrate away against the top few.
As of now I feel that these characters are all more than viable:
Viper
Dante
Magneto
Zero
Phoenix/Dark Phoenix
Wesker
Amaterasu
Dormammu
Wolverine
Trish
Taskmaster
Doctor Doom
There are plenty of other good characters, but I feel those are the ones who are really up there 12 really dominant characters in a cast of 38 would be amazing if it stayed that way or grew as new technology is discovered for lower characters.
I don’t think any character in this game bothered me as much as Zero and his jump C. I just jump back and lame it out as much as possible.
Felicia’s command grab is 1-5 frames of start-up, depending on the strength used. You won’t be comboing with it unless you have very specific set-ups. (If they’re blocking, Rolling Buckler into Rolling Slide into a very well timed Hell Cat works well for me… so long as they don’t push block.)
This post also proves that characters that are fun for some aren’t fun for others. Felicia is one of the few characters I was hyped for that I stuck with for the entire duration of this game. (Others being Haggar and Arthur, although they didn’t end up being as viable as I hoped they would be…)
Haha, I tried Viper today… Day 1 what the fuck all around.
ALL. THE. INVINCIBILITY. ITS LIKE PLAYING HULK/SENTINEL/DERP-SLASHER ON ROCKET PROPELLED ROLLER-SKATES USING CRACK COCAINE AS FUEL.
That and Thunder Knuckle EX is just hilariously cruel. It lets anyone turn a hit confirm into like… any combo they want.
But I’m in complete agreement with Chrisis. With just a little tweaking the lower tiers could seriously hope to match-up to these 12 top listed here. And while sooner or later nerfs have to be implemented to really tie the package together, that should be kept to the absolute minimum. The game will just be more fun the more tools are added or improved rather than taken away. At least for the tools that absolutely can get away without tweak.
@ Ranadiel, have faith in Capcom not to turn every fighter they have control over into Street Fighter variants? BLASPHEMY!
I’ll take that drink now, AceKillah.
Edit: I was ninja’d, read this like it was just behind Chrisis.
(I’ll try to leave this thread alone until the NYC thing is over on Thursday. I feel like I’m spamming it.)
Haha, Chris’s specials look so much faster in UMvC3. He’ll still get owned by Trish and some other people, but at least I can actually play a zoning game without being a psychic or having to trade half of the time now.
Uh…I don’t think that’s what Chrisis said at all. In fact, the only person that’s really talked about that on this page is Ranadiel right above him, who pretty much said the exact opposite in that things are easier to nerf and some things need to be nerfed, otherwise everyone becomes extremely stupid to point where everyone’s the same. The problem of “balance”, but in the other direction.
Good to know.
That’s pretty obvious, though, to the point where I shouldn’t have even had to point it out. Finding something boring or entertaining is pretty never objective.
For the record, I don’t mind her gameplay in this game. In fact, I wouldn’t mind trying it out. It’s just…I can’t stand the character. She’s so damn cheery, especially with the voice has in this game, and I’ve never really liked cat-girls, so…yeah. That’s already two massive strikes against her.
Yeah I went and re-read in a more stable state of mind. I just plain twisted that earlier. That is my bad. Sorry. Still I stick to that point.
Phoenix, wolverine, lvl3 XF, and DHC needed to be nerfed if you need an explanation why you don’t have decent comp in your area and/or are an idiot.
As long as those nerfs stay in place I really don’t care if the rest of vanilla’s bullshit gets into mvc3. Two things people need to keep in mind though:XF wasn’t nerfed as much as you might want it to be and exchange meter drain goes both ways, sure now phoenix teams will get DP a lot less often but a phoenix team will have an easy time building meter while they take away that bar you worked hard to build for snap back.
As a general rule I prefer fighting games to be high damage so the best change UMVC3 implemented IMO is the almost universal health nerf now if vanilla didn’t teach you to block UMVC3 will or leave you with salt in your vagina.
I can respect that. It’s actually the exact same reason I main her: Personality.
I love upbeat, positive, cheery characters…which is a shame, because it’s seeming like upbeat characters are getting phased out. Even Captain America, who I loved in MSH and MvC1, isn’t his same self in this game. He used to give his fallen opponents a thumbs up, and tell 'em “Good Work, Soldier!” I liked that. Charisma. Now, he’s all business. So boring.
@The Damned: Sorry man, I have a pretty bad memory and spend a lot of time spewing Hulk-this’s and Hulk-that’s in multiple topics, so it’s hard for me to keep track.
@AceKillah: I’m not a drinker, but thanks for the appreciation.
@ Mustache Man: While the boulder Chris punches in RE5 may be the same size as the one in MvC3… it’s not what Chris did in MvC3 that we’re comparing. It’s Chris’s :qcb::l://:h: v. Hulk’s :qcb::atk::atk:. I’m sorry man, but if we were playing RE6 and Hulk was in it and for some reason or another (and RE games have little rhyme or reason behind what happens in them) then yes, Chris could BP Hulk’s Space Boulder.
I really wish that Hulk would yell out “Space Boulder” when he did Gamma Crush…
Edit: Nemesis gameplay footage!
He’s got Wesker and Akuma left, and all I need to do is ToD Wesker and I’ve got this in the bag. Tools available to me are lvl3 x-factor, 5 bars, and Chris Redfield… Ah shit.
Wait what? I hit Wesker? I need to quit thinking about it and connect that combo! 2H 6H S HHS… Sweet, now after I relaunch from a gun special, I’ll take his ass out with a lvl3 and juke Akuma into x-factoring early so I can x-factor his random supers. Okay, the 2H connected, and if my lvl3 is anything like Magneto’s or Wesker’s, this should land a killing blow.
Super Awesome Long Startup Super that Requires Hard Knock Down to Combo Off Of Animation
FML.
P.S. Devil is right about Seth Killian. James Chen’s jokes combined with Skisonic’s rapid fire mouth are perfect for the silliness and quick pace of MvC3.
Nerf Dr. Strange. Before its too late.
Just because something is faster doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible to have it balanced into boring oblivion. It’s not likely but it’s certainly possible and speaking on this topic with a level of certainty reserved for imaginary sky deities is pretty stupid too.
Teleports. Why does everyone have to have a teleport? Oh, and tracking projectiles, that’s gonna be fun to play against…
SALT ALREADY! strange owns before even being playable!
-dime
Now we just need Dr. Octopus, or have Dormammu get his Ph.D. Team Doctor!
