Ultimate MvC3 potentially an ultimate sales failure - Implications?

Almost all Capcom games that are major releases these days are Fighting games. The only 3 games that aren’t fighting games that are coming out for capcom are Asura’s Wrath and the two RE games. Meahwhile, Mega Man, the one series that made Capcom what it is, is only getting one game, and that game is a Korean only MMO, with no chance of a stateside release. They expect RE, SF, and Marvel to earn them sales due to fanbases alone, which means failure in this current gaming industry.

Capcom wouldn’t be in this mess if Legends 3 wasn’t canceled. Yeah Universe being canceled sucked, but Legends 3 was honestly the final nail in the coffin for most people. It wasn’t because Mega Man wasn’t in MvC3 or UMvC3, it was because Legends got canceled that Mega Man fans got truly upset. I gurantee you if Legends 3 was still on, you wouldn’t be having this whole tirade of Mega Man fans complaining about the X costume, the H&H cards, and the lack of an actual playable Mega Man in UMvC3.

To add on to that, Capcom isn’t a major player in the games industry anymore. MvC3 to UMvC3 made sure of that. Barley anyone is going to buy SFxT because of second edition games that come out a year or 8 months ahead of the original release. Just watch and see. The only way SFxT sells well is if they put Mega Man in SFxT and Capcom is crazy enough to do it.

some of you are super salty holy fuck, its 40 goddamn dollars if you hate it move the fuck on

you guys act like you paid capcom to clean your house, but instead they farted in your food and spread peanut butter inside your computer.

Basing video games sells a month after release using VG Charts is whats failure.

^ The VGCHARTZ numbers are more than likely wrong (it’s not going to sell 22k week 1 in Japan and than do 30k in america) but the fact is that unless it’s a blockbuster game that keeps the numbers rolling in, what you do in month 1 makes up for most of your sales.

So if UMVC3 does 150k this month, don’t expect to get anywhere near 400k period

Shouldn’t we save the kid insults for when 12 year old makes top 48 at next years Evo, and it’s not like Capcom need SFxTK to do smash numbers, they’ll be happy if it doesn’t rank for 1 month and fall the fuck off the face of the charts like MVC3 did.

Mind elaborating on this? VGChartz can definitely have its inaccuracies, but I would argue that they generally serve as a decent leading indicator. As in, it’s entirely possible that their figures can be off as much as 25-50% from the real data, but they at least give a ballpark estimate of where to expect the real figures for the game to come in.

For UMvC3 sales not to be horrible, they would have to be 3.5-4x the amount that VGChartz reported, and even for them that would be completely unprecedented (not to mention that would only bring UMvC3 sales up into mediocore territory, not necessarily good).

Mindless bashing of VGChartz because you want to ignore the implications of its data is really stupid. When you combine the data they came out with, with all of the other factors that have been observed (high competition with other games, stores carrying low amounts/not carrying it at all, lack of new players online), the evidence strongly points to a sales failure.

Totality of evidence in this thread? Let’s see… the number of opinions in this thread account for what… .001% of the actual consumer base? All I’m saying is maybe people should get concrete numbers and actual evidence before going “omg failure” and not going off of what one website (with questionable rep) has to say. I’d also like ot add the top 30 global chart they listed is “ending Nov 19th” which is only 4 days after it’s release. It’s been well over that now and I’m wondering what the sales figures are showing now for it as they dont have it listed, specially with the big holiday shopping weekend just passing.

Even the silentchief website who reported what VGcharts had to say has a small disclaimer “A more accurate sales numbers for UMvsC3 and other tiles will likely be supplied when NPD releases its monthly sales data in December.”

The only reason they have 30k units as a sales figure is because the #30 in the list was only at 32k and UMvC3 wasnt in the chart. Who’s to say they didn’t even receive a sales figure to post to begin with for US sales.

Who knows maybe it really did tank in sales these past few weeks but noone knows until ACTUAL numbers are posted. Until then this thread is nothing but speculation, and the once again megaman pedos crying cuz they didn’t get their character and shouting “see capcom!”

I’m sure including him would have tripled sales… yeah…

Majority of sales in a month are done week 1, majority of sales in a year are done month 1.

VGchartz numbers are not to be trusted. SSFIV(which matches with UMvC3 in series progression) sold about 190k in it’s first US month so something above 150k is what you would need for UMvC3 to look healthy. Sub 100k means Capcom fucked up, but they probably won’t ever tell us that.

Personally… the Marvel side of the new additions is bleh to me aside from Dr.Strange, Ghost Rider and Iron Fist. Also, no one cares about Ken  .

I don’t think we’ll get the numbers… NPD is kinda fucked at the moment with all the information restrictions, you generally have to rely on press releases from companies to figure out numbers… and if UMVC3 did 100k than noway in hell will capcom say so.

Yeah this is what I was wondering. It’s obvious that only people that really like Vanilla SFIV went and picked up SSFIV and same with AE. The majority of just random people who can say they have bought/played/liked SFIV at some point probably didn’t buy the game past Vanilla any way. Should be the same for this game. It’s just I can understand if this game sold a bit slower because of other implications that SSFIV console and AE I don’t think had to go through and just how unforgiving some of the game’s mechanics can be for someone used to SFIV.

With an industry dominated by high-profile, blockbuster type games like Modern Warfare and Skyrim, there’s little room for a fighting game that hardly caters to the casual gamer to thrive. It doesn’t matter to me honestly, I’ll still be playing Ultimate and AE when Call of Duty 20 and Elder Scrolls XVIII come out.

I didn’t have a PS3 when Vanilla SFIV came out and SSFIV was one of the first games I ever got. I also never got vanilla MvC3, so I don’t feel ripped off for either game, lol.

Maybe if they put footage of the MvC3 grand finals in the intro of these commercials instead of two geeks in a weird dance battle like I saw this afternoon, people would be more intrigued, lol. Anyone I’ve ever shown Maximilian’s EVO hype video is impressed by it. Same goes for EVO moment #37. You just have to show people how crazy and fun the game can be.

Or you know, you can hire Jonah Hill to be in your commercial and have a soda company endorse you and maybe that’ll do something for your sales.

I just hope this has taught Capcom not to abuse DLC and to release COMPLETE games.

What they needed was an obnoxious commercial involving a black guy with a white handlebar leaning in to the screen and shouting “WHERE MY CURLY MUSTACHE AT?” followed by a quick transition to “Right here in Mahvel baybe!” and 2 seconds of game footage followed by a picture of Megaman with tits.

That’d probably appeal to the casual gamers.

Only a small portion of people posting in this thread have been the braindead “WAH MEGAMAN” people - I even posted in the OP that anyone claiming that as a reason was dumb.

The much stronger evidence is the following (which supports the VGChart indicator of low sales):

1.) UMvC3 released amongst incredibly tough competition.

2.) Many retailers did not stock many copies of the game, or in some cases like Target did not stock the game at all.

3.) Experiences with online play by a great deal of people on this forum seem to indicate that there’s a distinct lack of week 1 bad players running around. As in, it doesn’t seem as though very many Timmy casuals picked up the game. Lack of Timmy casuals = high probability of poor game sales which backs up the VGChartz indicator.

You can close your eyes and cover your ears and pretend that all the data and info is wrong, but that’s just ignoring reality at this point. The absolute best case scenario for UMvC3 at this point is probably soft/mediocore sales numbers around 100k in the US- the worst case is a total bust of 50-60k (or less).

I quit buying capcom games for over 2 years now. Why you ask?

CUZ CAPCOM MAKES A NEW FUCKING VERSION EVERY SEVERAL MONTHS!!! FUCK THAT LMAO

cool story bro

If you want more people buying your game, don’t release it in November. Meh

That’ll learn ya capcom… lol

Capcom is probably gonna lay low after this and SFXT athey fuckin up bad.
and it is delicious

If this means that I’m not gonna have to pay for mvc arcade edition in the next 6 months then I’m happy

I have 97 friends on PSN 33 own vanilla and do not plan on getting Ultimate, 2 own Ultimate and vanilla and 7 just own Ultimate. The 33 accept for a few pretty much stop playing it so I consider this casual players, now for the 2 that own both these are the fans loyal to vs. series there constantly camping and raping beginners lobby and for the 7 that just own Ultimate there are 3 players that knew capcom was going to put out a second updated version and waited and other 4 are just casuals jumping in now who also stop playing it. That pretty much sums up how well it’s going to do. Cap premature ejaculated them selves on the foot with this. I hope SxT does better maybe not due to gay ass Gem system.
