Do you honestly think a Wesker buff and a She-Hulk nerfed, or X-Factor matters to CASUAL gamers? No. They probably couldn’t even tell the difference. The HUD looks a lot more stylish, so that’s probably something casuals would like. Casual gamers like flashiness, and the new HUD is definitely that.
The Wesker/She-hulk thing is just an EXAMPLE of some of the questionable balance changes that were made… And I’m sure a causual gamer gets just as salty, if not, more salty when they lose all 3 characters in 10 seconds due to lvl 3 x-factor
And yes, I agree with you on the HUD, it looks much more stylish… **Untill you play the game! **and you realize how horrible it was designed.
Well DMC wasn’t even an IP before DMC1 so I don’t understand the first part, as for Vergil he was popular reoccurring boss fight Nelo Angelo so you can hold dat shit. Are specific characters going to single handedly boost sales, tough to say. Put yourself in the shoes of a casual gamer who hears there are 12 new characters in UMvC3 and you see…some dude named Firebrand and Rocket Raccoon? I don’t care how interesting they are from a gameplay standpoint they have zero name recognition. Especially not over characters like Venom (the most overrated villain in the history of anything not named Sephiroth), Cyclops (leader of the X-Men, the best selling book Marvel has ever produced), Mega Man (face of Capcom), and such. You market a game towards a specific crowd of gamers you don’t get big sales numbers especially in a fall release alongside the most anticipated games of the year. I’d like to think Capcom knew this would happen, but I doubt it they’re a pretty terribly run company these days. The game is fun, but it’s not a very appealing game to the masses.
I’ve been a huge support of all things Marvel for a decade, and REALLY like Ultimate, but I’ve been stuck in #Occupy Skirim.
I bought UMvC3 release day, grabbed the updated New Testament offa Amazon, and have put (checked) 15 hours into training mode, 3 into online matches.
I want to play more of it, but Skyrim has me absolutely hooked. It’s just that good.
BAD release timing (I know it’s that they’re losing the Marvel license) but it’s a brutal time of year. I’m hopeful that when Heroes & Heralds comes out, people will be more interested.
Am I the only one who thinks there are too many games coming out? I feel that they should give some time to let a game breathe and develop competitively before trying to get us all to get another game. How much time does every person have to invest to get medum to high level at a game? Right now as it is, I only have 5-10 hours a week to devote to Marvel along with everything else I need to do to pay bills and invest in my education.
At it’s heart, MVC is a fanservice game. You can’t compare it to a non-Dissidia Final Fantasy because they aren’t fanservice games, they’re meant to have an engaging single player experience. MVC2 had X-Men up the ass and most people knew at least 60% of the cast starting out. I don’t fully disagree with you since I didn’t know Captain Commando and Jin until MVC1 and I loved that game, but it was released in a much different market and in a different technical environment.
Nowadays, with internet being universally accessible, fans are much better equipped to give their input on what they would like in a game. From a business perspective, having Megaman or Venom instead of say, RR and Firebrand (not that I dislike these characters), would be much more profitable.
There’s really no point in buying Ultimate if you already bought vanilla unless you are a “hardcore” gamer or just really like a select few of the new characters. If you are a casual and already spent 60 on vanilla, you’re probably not willing to spend another 40 dollars a mere 9 months later just to have an extension of a game you “kinda” like.
Lol Re-releases never outsell originals, especially for a genre that has become as niche as fighters.
The failure of this game, regardless of high or low sales
-
Lack of single player activities. even color edit mode is fun for a decent amount of people
-
Minimal changes. 3 frames off is major for a tournament player, for a casual fighting game player (yes my opinion is that casual can be related to each genre and the opposite of casual is NOT hardcore) its a few training mode sessions difference or no difference because they were playing in online muck anyway lol frame counting, for johnny new comer, thats the exact same fucking game.
-
Adding so little to what was there. Content sells. adding new ultras in sf4 (which i can’t begin to express how stupidly a lot of posters react to) is un comparable. Adding an un-comboable lamp-post move to she hulk and adding a new way to apply pressure, and approach with your character in a match ( a new ultra) is not even remotely similar.
-
12 new characters, to someone who didn’t even play marvel 2 vergil is the most likely to be known. 8 new stages, 6 of which are recolors?
-
Attempting to appeal to new comers and old schoolers alike but appealing to both as half heartedly as possible. (oh heres some new content, sorta/ and oh, hey guys we added some new characters, and gave the old ones some new tools, sorta)
I know we’re having fun with this game, but how many of you honestly feel like you actually purchased a great game and how many of you feel like you purchased an expansion pack, because i damn sure feel like the latter. I’m not complaining about the product, hell i bought it, theres shit i can say now.
heroes and heralds is why i bought it along with the 40 dollar price tag, but i was on the fence with buyers remorse after the OH SHIT 12 NEW CHARACTERS, thing stopped thrilling me, and that was surprisingly quick.
and geese, whats with mentioning seth killian so much people. That one man, does nothing but what he is paid to do, being a community manager. He doesn’t hob-nob with company execs saying , “hey guys someone on the capcom unity forums called the gem system scrubby,** HOP ON IT BOYS**.”
and Marvels liscensing excuse. now without going into everyone believing that having a business class or two and knowing everything or everyone siding with whats done already think. Assume you have some say in marvel.
How prominent are comics?
How many gamers read comics?
How unreasonable is it for a company to request a longer contract with you to make more money & make your future products more notable, by raising notoriety?
Think about how many people knew what a rocket raccoon was pre ultimate reveals and check how many do now.
Something tells me getting a contract thing is a “this door is out of order” sort of thing. you believe it and use another door, but in the back of your mind you can’t make sense of it.
Another thing is the fact that people aren’t exactly into the game play where you can’t do anything unless you have a friend to play against. It’s a lot easier to just pick up a game like a skyrim and play through the campaign, while the only option in umvc3 for most people is online because they refuse to play training mode, and online just gets people upset. People originally saw the trailers and shit for mvc3 and were persuaded by the mindless customer within them and probably didn’t even realize what the game would be like. Now that people have had a taste for the game, most people aren’t too happy that the options for single player are exactly the same as before+the release time. I have plenty of friends who don’t want to buy it because of this issue. Think about it this way. Some players actually think that the main fun of the game is actually supposed to be found in arcade mode, which just will never happen because arcade is nothing like a real human being.
I don’t see what the big deal is. We all love fighting games here right? Its going to be at Evo right? That is what matters to me. The game is mad fun, it isn’t the best fighting game ever, but for me, a fighting game fan, it is amazing. I don’t really care about it getting huge sales, I just want to play it competitively with other people who share my fighting game compassion.
And VG charts has not always been the most accurate, considering I recently saw a chart showing the PS3 version of UMVC3 was #10 top game sells in the USA in the last 2 weeks, and was #21 in UK for Xbox. And Skyrim doesn’t help. I bought Skyrim, and still haven’t played it because of UMVC3. I must be a complete reversal of the average gamer right now lol. And the worst part is that I still need to play Rage and Space Marine!
One would think the most obvious answer is that you had a niche game coming out at the same time as a number of big hitters. This is less about the actual content of the game and more about Skyrim/Skyward Sword/Assassin’s Creed having a much larger fan base.
NO CHARACTERS PEOPLE CARE ABOUT
Marvel and Capcom going for the “obscure/fanboy characters” worked for comic fans, but from the casual fans of the series, and other video game players i talk to, i always heard stuff like
"wheres ken/cable/cyclops?"
one guy even told me it didnt make sense for captain commando to not be in the game since he is capcoms mascot. the fact is, much like SF3, if you take a series that’s had a lot of the same characters the whole time and then put a bunch of new ones in people wont like it. fanboys dont grow up
It can’t be that black and white, tho. Being overwhelmed by the competition wasn’t good for the game, but neither was being another barebones release. I hesitate to call it an expansion because aside from the characters, I think we actually LOST content. Shadow Mode and Event Mode were insulting and underwhelming, respectively, but at least they were THERE.
Also, the big reward for the “loyalty” of buying the original? You get Galactus Mode- laughable, like 5 minutes long, and even if you DIDN’T get the 1st game, you’ll still be able to unlock it. I can really tell that Capcom appreciates my loyalty.
I dunno. Maybe I’m just an entitled asshole, but I think Capcom shot themselves in the foot here.
I don’t remember how VF4:Evo did, but VF4 sold quite well (don’t remember the exact number, but it was over 500k, enough to reach Greatest Hits), as did Tekken Tag, Tekken 4, Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 5, and even Soul Calibur 3 to an extent (Namco was making money during the Capcom drought). Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur 4 sold alright as well (enough to reach Greatest Hits at least); they just shipped way too many copies out so the price dropped fast.
About UMVC3: It was just bad timing, and Capcom (as well as Arcsys, but that’s another story) has no idea how to do logical sequel progression. Adding Super/Ultimate/Hyper/etc. does make a different impression than just adding a new number or year, even if the amount of new/changed content is the same. Also, while an improvement, it still doesn’t feel quite there yet, and the amount of actual content is still laughable (Tekken 3/SFA3/Soul Blade/Tobal 2/etc. had more 1p content than this game and they came out on the freaking PS1).
I’m curious about the implications the sales will have on fighting games trying to be considered a mainstream genre.
No one wants to say it, but sfxt will do exactly that.
From a business perspective, it’s not a matter of how fun it is or whether or not the fighting game community likes it, it’s the matter of how many units the game sells. If it was Capcom’s goal to appease the “hardcore” gaming community, then the game would be considered…sort of successful in that sense. However, Capcom is a major gaming corporation and they didn’t get where they are by only focusing on one market segment, which is why this game can be considered a financial failure.
Capcom’s next great hope is SFxT. I’m wondering when it does come out, what drama will fully ensue?
Frankly I think most of you need to STFU and stop making lists like you know all the details.
9 months later, feels like the same game except with a few new characters that shoulda been in from the start.
I could have told Capcom this shit wasn’t going to sell good. (Capcom, ill work for 15$hr if you read this. I’ll make better choices then the guy you pay100k+)
I hope this game last, but to be honest I already am a little tempted to just say fuck it, and learn ae2012.
Sidenote* SFxT will suck. Way to blow a one time chance so you can make money. What ever happened to pride? I mean Tekken, AND Street fighter in the same game, and you give us this kid bullshit? lolll Good luck matching smash bros. numbers with SFxT… Never Gonna Happen.
This is a message bored where people come to share their opinion. Right, or wrong…
