It’s the time they released it in which was a very bad decision with big games like Gears of War 3, Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Halo Anniversary, Assassins Creed Revelations, Saints Row 3 and many more all released around the same time as UMvC3.
The supposed VGchartz numbers are likely much closer to the true numbers than not.
What’s Svensson going to say as an employee of Capcom: “The numbers aren’t 100% accurate, but yes our game bombed?”
The absence of info from Capcom on sales should be all the information you need that they haven’t gone well. Normally Capcom would have released a statement by now noting that UMvC3 had a great launch week, and they they sold over XXX copies. The lack of that statement says a lot - and when you combine that fact with the fact that major retailers aren’t carrying the game or ordered low amounts, and how online play has a distinct lack of new players… well, it supports rather than detracts from the vgchartz numbers.
Even if the US numbers were double the vgchartz numbers (which is unlikely), it would still mean UMvC3 was a gigantic sales failure. You should really look at the totality of the evidence (most of which in this thread) before going “LOL BUT SVENSSON SAID!” in response.
maybe some people bought MvC3 and didn’t like it enough to buy a sequel.
i bought it, decided i still don’t like using a team in my fighting games, and went back to Weaponlord. definitely not picking up the sequel to a game i didn’t enjoy.
Megaman IS popular within the gaming community. Remember the casual community are simply gamers. The issue is that Megaman hasn’t been marketed (successfully) to a newer generation of players. While people who are older (32) will know about Megaman since I was actually alive and well in the 80s, the casual market is 18-35. But the people buying games release date are probably between 18-25 (this is anecdotal of course). Guys like Chris, Wesker, Nemesis, etc are probably more marketable to the modern casual gamer. This is why Devil May Cry and Resident evil are over represented here, and not other series like Ace Attourney, Megaman X, or Okami.
Honestly with a new upgrade, higher sales shouldn’t be expected much anyway. It has little to do with a great single player, because SSFIV single player certainly is lacking. Online is probably the source problem though. I’d imagine the online community will probably grow for this game instead of shrink.
I dont think much logic is being applied in this thread, its all sensationalist nonsense
Mega-man would of helped a little. I mean honestly, only because someone likes mega-man doesn’t
mean they’re are going to like this game/fighting games. I have a couple of friends who like mega-man but
aren’t going to buy this game only cause he’s in it. If this game sold poorly it’s probably because of bad timing
amongst other things. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if people are waiting on UMVC3 Arcade edition. >_>
Svensson is the same dipstick that said we’re not getting the update of Sengoku Basara 3 because no one bought the original…despite the fact it sold decent considering they didn’t even advertise the damn thing.
I wouldnt say “noone is going to get it”, a lower price tag is definitely appealing to people shopping for xmas presents.
And lets be real - megaman would have made little difference if any for buying the game or not. If you are a fan of MvC or fighters you already planned on buying the game. If you were to buy a game you are not even interested in JUST BECAUSE of Megaman… you would not have really played anyway… Megaman isnt going to make people pay for something they would not pay for in the first place.
That’s like saying “I’m not interested in fighting games, and I don’t buy them, but I’m getting soul calibur because Ezio is in it”.
Well, if we don’t get another update, we’ll have to do with what we have. It’s a good thing that I prefer Ultimate to vanilla (Mainly due to the changed meter gain and the removal of that unholy abomination known as the DHC glitch).
Also, kiddies don’t really care about Mega Man; most of them barely even know him, or remember him as the guy from those RPG games. It’s the older teens/young adults who remember and like him.
Lol if umvsc3 could have a project justice story mode , put ( venom , megaman x and gambit ) , decent online mode and release it next year. It’s clear umvsc3 will have better sell .
Some people at capcom japan wanted for this game to be release as soon as possible
Ya dont say ? Even when a certain “vga” has not even posted North American or EU sales figures for the title in question ? BALSPHEMY !(!)!
Though I am, once again, enjoying the MegaMan tears !
pew , pew , pew
I know Capcom has a packed february/march with Asura’s Wrath, Dragons Dogma, Resident Evil Raccoon City and SFxTK all coming out. And maybe they have a gentleman deal with Namco and won’t release a fighter too close to SoulCalibur V (out on late january). This is probably the most convenient time for the release, when I think about that. But in the end, it feels like both versions of MvC3 had the release rushed.
There’s actually at least 2 guys in my area who are getting SCV specifically because Ezio is in it. Hell, I’m getting it just because of character creation. I got the Gamecube version of SC2 specifically because I preferred Link over Spawn and Heihachi. We all have our motivations.
I do personally feel that Mega Man being in wouldn’t make a huge difference - but that’s not to say it wouldn’t make any difference at all. Especially if they put him on the front cover.
As for the lower price tag appealing to impulse shoppers - that’d make a difference IF it were available. It isn’t. It’s not available anywhere outside of online retailers, and as they say “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.”
Even though I love UMvC3, I can say it is pretty piss-poor as a game. Anyone who wasn’t already going to get it (a.k.a. hardcore Marvel 3 fans) flat-out isn’t going to get it. There’s no content for offline, and the online experience is still pretty flawed (much improved over vanilla, but still not good enough).
Should have saved it to come out alongside The Avengers.
From a sales/marketing perspective, this game was just not designed well for the general audience. I’m probably going to get alot of shit for saying this, but the inclusion of popular household names like Cyclops, Megaman, and the like would have contributed a good amount to their sales. But what did we get for the 12 characters? Maybe 2-4 characters that were quite popular and the rest are obscure characters that the majority of the general audience is unfamiliar with/don’t give a fuck about. Casuals want to play as their favorite popular character, not as fucking Rocket Raccoon.
That or they tried it out at a store and got pissed that XF3 still rapes your entire team after winning 80% of the match.
I don’t think casuals are the type to play consistently enough to be winning 80% of a match, personally.
Seth said its a licensing issue with Marvel, they gave Capcom two time frames for potential release, one maybe a bit earlier than they wanted, and one way later than they wanted. So they chose the earlier one, and that’s why UMVC3 came out this quarter.
Casuals still play other casuals and will get salty if a game mechanic is that retarded
You know, I’m really doubting these numbers.
Japan had the game in their top 10, and the series isn’t even as popular there. And split between all 50 states, it would mean that an average of only 600 people in each state bought the game. That doesn’t sound believable to me.
Possible reasons for low sales:
-online still sucks
-Wesker buffed and She-hulk nerfed…Why?
-X-factor still retarded
-Tac even more retarded than vanilla
-no fan favorites on marvel side and no megaman
-9 months after the original makes casuals feel like it is an unnecessary update and some people salty about the game
-The HUD is awefull, Beginners that play this for the first time may be discouraged by the fact that it takes a good day of playing to adjust to the counter-intuitive HUD.
Character inclusion does no equal sales either. I mean Final Fantasy has a whole new cast of character every release (with some exceptions like Cid) and those games get over well with casuals. Who was Dante before Devil May Cry 1? Who was Vergil before Devil May Cry 3? Who are ANY of these characters? By the logic of not including characters, one can make this argument across the board. Games sell REGARDLESS of who is in them. Single player mode in today’s market makes no difference either. Again, SSFIV is not the most engaging single player mode, with a pretty shody and non-sensical story, stupid endings, and silly interactions among characters, I wouldn’t call it a great story mode.
Games like VF4 and VFEvo didn’t sell too well either. Both of those games had a shitload of great single player options. Including Kumite/Quest mode (mind you it predates online gaming, but was innovative for it’s time), a really interactive training mode which actually taught you a lot about the game mechanics, a customizable AI on top of a regular arcade mode. Those games didn’t sell shit. One may argue they came around at a time when fighting games in general weren’t very popular, but games like Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance still sold even at that time. Tekken 6 had a pretty loaded single player mode (campaign mode) which allowed you to customize your character, and no only that you can take your customized character online with you. That game missed the mark in terms of sells as well.
People probably weren’t asking for people like Nova, Rocket Racoon, and others. But then again I’m sure in MVC2 people didn’t ask for Son Son, Ruby Heart, Marrow, and Jin. Jin is from Cyberbots a game most casuals would know nothing about. Marrow is about as obscure as they come, and had almost no visibiliy in the popular TV show. Sure they existed amongst characters like Cable and Gambit, but shit Rocket Racoon and Nova exist amonst names like Spiderman, Ryu, Captain America, and Thor.
I’m honestly not buying the character thing. Honestly as the case with MVC2, people generally learn to like the characters. Very few people are not going to get the game just because their character isn’t in it. This game has to have appeal for casual gamers. So this begs the question, was this game ever even intended for casuals in the first place? My guess is probably not. If so, way more features would have been advertised or included, even if they are gimmicky. But none were. To be honest with you, a lot of design decisions in this game came down to balance pretty much, something only hardcore fighting fans care about.
Are VGChart numbers oversensationalized, probably a bit. But I don’t doubt this game didn’t sell as well as it’s predcessor. Very little was done to try to seperate itself from it’s predecessor anyway.
