Well personally I think the game was a failure all together despite it’s somewhat decent tournament turnout. Capcom just seemed to have no idea what they were doing in all respects of this games development. Firstly they pretty much took all the positive lessons learned from MvC2 and threw them out the window, then they ignored the core communitys advice to cater to casual players, then they scared the casual players away by not keeping to their development promises and releasing an almost full price update less than a year later. Now heroes and heralds is too little too late because all the players it was intended for haven’t even bought the game, and all the core players are left with a scrubby mess of a game which more than 50% of the core community still dislike for various yet obvious reasons.
It’s yet another time where it’s evident that developers should listen to core players because casuals simply don’t care either way, the people who have kept the franchise alive do care and are the ones who will continue to keep the franchise alive. If you lose those people you’ve lost and that destroys everything you’ve just tried to build. Instead of making ultimate Capcom should have made heroes and heralds to keep the casuals interested and left the core community to continue exploring the still young vanilla, that way they would have not only secured a larger customer base for ultimate, but had more time to make smarter decisions on balance changes.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the game is dead in a year. I’m a long time community member and a long time Marvel 2 fan and I’m already losing interest, I can’t imagine how other players are felling who have been going longer than I have. It would be quite funny if heroes and heralds ends up more popular than the actual game it’s self, not sure how casuals will get along in that mode either but I can sure see people thinking “fuck it” and just playing it instead because it’s actually interesting.
The timing on the release of UMVC3 will no doubt go down as one of the hugest marketing blunders of all time. I wouldn’t be surprised if the CEO of Capcom and other top executives get fired at the end of this year over this debacle.
They already blundered the massive failure that is Lost Planet 2 and this will be the final straw.
One thing I go by is the lack of European players. I’m on every night and I get “failed to find player” and that’s not because the matchmaking is buggy but because there’s literally no one playing. I’ve encountered maybe 20-30 individual players online throughout the whole of Europe since release, only one or two people play ranked in the evening, maybe a few in player matches, maybe a few more in lobbies, but thats about it. The game is pretty much dead online in Europe, compared to vanilla at least.
I do worry whether UMvC3 can stay relevant even after a year. Because it seems like so many things will be found within the next few months and what happens after that. This also depends on whether Capcom will actually support the game going further and also take an effort in building more community post-release.
I know UltraDavid spoke about Capcom needing to be more aggressive towards post-release buzz and keep things interesting.
And hopefully as xmas hits, more people will get this game if they spent their money on the bigger titles and saved this for their xmas list. And maybe by then people will have played the other big titles for a bit and will look to play something new.
It’s funny, it’s almost like Capcom is learning the opposite lessons from this. Low sales due to all the re-release shenanigans and lack of content? Capcom answers with “No replay on consoles, only on vita! Surely that’ll make you want to buy our next console fighter, yes?”
Is that REALLY what they’re doing?! REALLY?! Ahahaha! Capcom are officially the most backwards Company out there. They do realise the largest player base will be on console and that console is the ONLY platform where people will care about a replay feature? It’s almost as if Capcom are intentionally trying to troll the people who actually care about the MvC franchise while at the same time truly believing that this is what will work. Well, I’m not buying it…
Should have seen it coming. After a few mere months vanilla play online within the euro dropped to damn near non-existant levels, (aside from the hardcores) though I like to believe it mostly had to do with the flawed matchmaking and netcode. Enter Ultimate a few months later, finding a fellow continental player after a few weeks is damn near impossible, even more so in ranked. Shame. If only ultimate could have been vanilla…
It’s strange since there are plenty of people playing AE2012 in Europe, so it’s not like the fg market is dead here. I guess the poor netcode killed most of the interest in vanilla, and the way too early release of Ultimate (plus not making it DLC) killed what remained.
I’m so glad that I didn’t buy this game especially after hearing the announcement that replay mode will be ps vita exclusive only. That’s a necessary mode for consoles. I’m done with Capcom games in general now, they really were a great company in the beginning but now they really lost their minds. I’ll be renting this game for sure though, I will not support Capcom by buying a retail copy of the game. Rent it or buy it used if you must.
Sign of an addict!
"OMG I WON’T EVER TOUCH ANY OF THIS DRUG EVER AGAIN!"
But if I manage to score some once in a while it will be OK, I promise!
I never really understood this argument, if you like their games enough to actually play them then what’s wrong with supporting the company who provide you with the game? If you feel that Capcom has wronged you in some way then not dealing with their games at all is the way to go. Saying that their games aren’t good enough to buy then going ahead and then going ahead and playing the games anyway because they’re fun (or any other reason) just makes your initial argument look weak and overall pointless. Not to mention it makes you look like a hypocrite.
