I understand the sentiment that a distinct lack of fan favorite characters hurt sales overall. The roster as a whole is kind of full of “huh?” character choices. But I think it’s important to remember that for the most part those characters we’re talking about like Megaman and Gambit have had more than their chance to shine in video games. And the lesser known characters that always get ignored have fans too. I respect Capcom for the character roster they chose. When MvC4 comes out with nearly an identical cast to MvC2 I won’t be surprised, but I will think fondly of what we got this time around.
^Don’t pay any mind to the above post. It’s that troll going around impersonating people again.
Dont pay attention to the 2 post above. They are Skullgirls fan and thus cannot be coherent.
/troll.
Really? I followed MUA2 EXTREMELY close & I don’t remember that much hate towards Gargan. There was a couple babies complaining that it wasn’t Brock, but most people didn’t care. Because:
1.) It fit the story
2.) He looked & played like how Venom should
If we ever do get more characters, I actually sorta want Thompson Venom more than Brock. They can even have the monster design in a hyper or something.
People are really underselling the game’s long term potential.
MvC2 sold for years and years in the casual and shopper mom community.
Oh shit man it’s got Wolverine and Dante, let’s fire this baby up.
Here ya go sweetie, it’s got Captain American and those guys from the Avengers movie you liked so much.
Even if there is some unjustified backlash over MML3 hurting Capcom’s current image, even if there is some older fans that wish characters from their generation were used, none of that will matter in the long term sales.
The game will have a long shelf life supported largely by people who don’t even know a damn thing about the game. They just want to pick Resident Evil characters and fight against Iron Man. Used games will only hurt it so much since this market resides largely at major shopping centers like Walmart.
MvC2 DIDN’T sell for years. It had a limited production run, hence the Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox prices being pretty high & the demand for it to be re-released on XBLA/PSN before it finally happened.
Though, I do agree with you on the fact that super casuals will pick it up. Capcom just has to get all the Vanilla copies off shelves & replace them with Ultimate copies.
I think the big question is, will capcom ever learn from this?
I’m not sure if I agree. They could have lowered the price of Jill and Shuma in general (I know it’s a whole character, but 5 dollars IS too much for DLC), but given an extra alternate skin, besides the one currently out there, for those who bought them in Vanilla time. The difference in cost adjustment would make it fairer to the public.
Yeah, for Jill they could have just bundled her into Ultimate and given anyone who already bought her a free S.T.A.R.S. skin or something (or make the RE3 skin the exclusive one and the STARS one the normal one). Would have mollified Jill owners while also making Capcom look a lot better.
I highly doubt no Mega Man alone hurt them that bad. But missing 90’s characters as a whole is a different story. That and trying to compete with Skyrim and such. That’s not gonna happen. Christmas and DLC of multiple characters people want might boost sales though.
So has there actually been any confirmation that the games sales were significantly lower than what Capcom anticipated, or is this still all complete speculation?
Possibly. It’s a difficult situation to be honest, even your proposed solution of a lower entry point for newcomers with extra content for early adopters would make a portion of people upset. “Fairer” in this regards is relative to the individual.
Some early adopters would be okay with the price of DLC going down as long as they received the extra costumes.
Others would be upset that they spent X dollars on DLC while others get it cheaper, regardless of their extra bonus.
New DLC purchasers would appreciate the cheaper DLC, but many would likely be upset that they don’t get the extra alternate costumes that early adopters received.
And then more questions are raised.
What do you discount the DLC to? $4 each? Anything too low and you risk upsetting early adopters, regardless of alt costumes.
What happens when new purchasers become upset that they don’t get the new alternate costume? Do you end up selling it?
How much do you sell the costumes for? $1 each? So now it’s the same price as the original DLC anyways.
Now a portion of purchasers are upset that they have to pay for costumes that other people got for free (regardless of the price being equal amongst early adopters in this example. People love to bitch).
So why not just sell the DLC at the original price, everyone gets the same costumes regardless of when they purchased them and everyone is on the same page, reducing the amount of opportunities people have to complain?
It ends up becoming a solution that includes too many steps and variables with too many chances to upset people.
While I’m not arguing that it’s not as equally as effective of a solution as “just leave them as $5 DLC”, I do think there’s more opportunity for Capcom to fuck it up and leave people miffed (because a lot of people are idiots and love to find the smallest details to complain about).
Is leaving them as $5 DLC the best solution? Debatable, but out of all of the options I feel it leaves the least amount of room for people to complain.
Well, the NPD was released. A huge month for November and UMvC3 is nowhere in sight in the top 10. Other games mentioned as having extremely good sales but not in the top 10 were Mario Land 3D and the Halo remake.
I guess vgchartz wasn’t completely wrong, but it shouldn’t be too surprising.
UMVC3 bombing is a victory for gamers everywhere.
Don’t charge $60 for a unfinished piece of shit and come back 6-7 months later to charge $40 for the same unbalanced crap. Good job gamers.
Is it really a question, though?
looks at signature I was going to make a point about how it could fuck over MvC3 players, but you seem like a troll so nevermind.
This game is absolutely worthless for new players/casuals. Most of them realised this with vanilla and weren’t overly keen on spending more money 8 months later to make the same mistake.
Seriously, what is a newcommer supposed to do in MvC3? Finish arcade mode a few times, have a bit of a laugh mashing buttons against friends. What next? Go online and get bounced off every wall by experienced SF/MvC players by unblockables/ambiguous assist mixups/crossups/a bunch of other shit they couldn’t even describe to someone, let alone understand what happened? This isn’t Call of Duty where the humongous playerbase can swallow up the diverse skill gap and always find you novice players even later in the game’s lifecycle. Jump into UMvC3 as a complete beginner and you’ll find at best, experienced SFIV players.
People bang on about a bit of input leniency and comeback mechanics to try and make Marvel seem beginner friendly, in reality, the input leniency hinders experienced players a little and X-Factor gets beginners deaded in seconds instead of minutes. I know the usual SRK response is just going to be ‘players should just suck it up’ blah blah blah but tbh, it’s irrelevant. 99% of gamers aren’t going to put themselves through months and months of demoralizing ‘play’ and grinding in something like UMvC3 before they get some success/reward.
More and more I feel if you didn’t get in the scene before/at SFIV launch, you’re screwed
I’m a troll for having an opinion?
Then again, this is coming from a dude with a Deadpool avatar.
MVC3 was the first game where i ventured online and played people differents than my usual circle of friends (who are absolute noobs at fighting game).
my first 30 games where 27 victories and 3 defeat, with a 14 and 10 win streak. my team was a god-awful Hulk-x23-Deadpool at the time (2 otgs for hulk because i couldnt do a simple gamma wave => gamma crush in the corner, and because those 3 i had fun playing (especially x23).
i love mvc3 (and umvc3) but it’s easy to be decent at this game.
Step 1) learn 3BnBs (one per character) even simple one who are just magic serie -OTG- super (the execution barrier for it is simply doing a fireball or shoryuken motion).
Step 2) Learn to block i you know that you can punish launcher you can get a LOT of victories.
Unfortunately there arent that many “good” online player who can do…dare i say it…setups?
i hit 6th lord in vanilla (and stopped ranked at this point) before knowing what Option Select meant.
After that i paused MvC3 and went to blazblue CS2, and became a decent lambda (somewhat low-execution character) player, not stellar, but decent.
It doesnt take months to get decent in mvc3 :/.
the VG Chartz say that umvc3 sold 30k copies in week 1, while KOF XIII sold 70k. Now, I love KOF XIII, but I find VG Chartz hard to believe.
