Ultimate MvC3 potentially an ultimate sales failure - Implications?

Shuma was top in MSH, I believe. So his history hasn’t always been flawed. I think it’s just a matter of time crunches and low priorities on the list of things to do that landed him where he is now.

Hopefully this teaches Capcom the importance of DLC. I’m surprised they didn’t do that anyway. 6 character packs for 10 bucks would of made them alot of moola. They could have paired a popular character with a less-known one. Throw in a couple stages with each pack, maybe with some extra stages to even it out.

Strider/Rocket Raccoon- Shadowland, Bonne Wonderland
Vergil/Iron Fist- City That Never Sleeps, Avengers Mansion
Frank West/Nova- Days of the Future Past, Willamette Mall
Phoenix Wright/Hawkeye- SHIELD Air Show, Ace Attorney Stage
Doctor Strange/Nemesis- Chaos at Tricell, Asgard: Sea of Space
Ghost Rider/Firebrand- Demon Village Redux, Danger Room

Oh well, I’m extremely happy with Ultimate anyway. I’ve put almost as many hours into Ultimate as I did in all of Vanilla’s life & I’ve had way more fun with Ultimate.

And on Flash Venom, I was there during MUA2 where people went nuts about Mac Venom. Marvel probably remembers that.

The issue comes from the fact that Marvel had some backlash from previous games when appeasing the fans of the 90s.

They wanted all there favorites so they still got yelled at where the comic fans were mad at the DLC not containing many big comic favs such as Hawkeye or Strange or Emma.

A single player storyline would be nice, its kinda sad that i have to play online to have any fun.

Wow, Marvel…Trying to figure out how to properly appease the fans, huh? What is the perfect balance of Marvel characters for a game then these days?

Twenty-five different Wolverines and Deadpools, if I remember correctly.

What people need to understand is that the vs. series is a simple advertising vehicle for Marvel and they choose which characters they want to advertise. For example Marvel wants to advertise Guardians of the Galaxy so they put in RR. Another thing is that 90’s X-Men characters, and Megaman aren’t what most people (casuals) want. It’s what some vocal people on the internet want but not the mainstream. The mainstream want the heroes in the movies (Captain America, Spiderman, etc.) and some **relevant **popular Capcom characters (no Megaman isn’t all that relevant to most people) such as Wesker and Dante. Marvel has 100% authority over what characters make it in and they’re gonna take advantage of this fact as much as possible. All the mainstream popular characters that people care about are there but sales weren’t good. This can only mean it was a simple matter of bad timing (releasing an expansion in November isn’t a good idea). End of story.

That reminds me of a joke when Wizard Magazine was still around and someone said you can have a year’s worth of Wizard covers featuring Wolverine and people will buy it.

Exactly. Marvel has complete 100% say on who they want. They are a much bigger company than they were back in the '90s. It amazes me how some people still hate on them for that.

Yeah, so I think Marvel isn’t going to try to appease the 90s fans anymore.

Here is a list of all chars that the 90s fans got and they still complained(no Cyke, no Kurt, no Eddie Venom, no Rogue(I LOOOOOVVVVVVEEEE her to death), etc.)

Carnage
Psylocke
Cable
Juggs(I know these four were DLC)
Gambit

and the big names that everybody knows and are in this game and MUA2 minus the F4(but they had a story arc to work around so we got Skrull instead) and Daredevil.

The comic fans got Iron Fist, Songbird, Penance and Cage put in due to Bendis’s love of him(not going to lie in MUA2…

Yet in the DLC only Black Panther was the hardcore comic fan char and Marvel ate tons of hate in the long run.

The roster should have some obscure chars that bring something fun and are cult favorites(Rocket, MODOK, Sent and Shuma(for MvC2 players), Taskmaster, Dormmy), the big names(Do I have to name these?), some comic favorites(Iron Fist, Hawkeye, Strange, Nova) and I think 1-2 fan favorites for the 90s(Ghost Rider is a big 90s character).

TBH I would be fine with another 90s character making it if not for the obnoxious fanbase of these characters. Like people were with MMX fans.

But the roster had nothing to do with the sales. The timing did.

I mean Skyrim and the new Zelda? Even CoD can’t compete with them two.

I’m just upset Deadpool made it in a Marvel fighting game after all these years and his nigga Cable ain’t there to back him up. Just not right. NIGGAS WAS SPOSED TO HAVE NIGGAS BACKS FOREVER, BISHOP.

What baffles me the most about UMVC3 is the consistent lack of Mega Man.

Nope, CoD with it’s 9.6 million pre orders couldn’t compete with Skyrim and Skyward Sword. Couldn’t compete at all.

On the Player 1 Podcast, Greg Sewart related a story when he was working on a Robotech game a few years ago. They were in heavy crunch to release the title during the holiday, which even Greg admitted would not be able to compete with your typical holiday blockbuster. So he asked his manager, why release this game during the massive holiday rush? Why not hold back the title for early next year when there is much less competition?

The manager replied, “I would much rather have a game be the 50th best selling game in December than the 5th best selling in February.”

clicks thread see’s that umvc3 ( ultimate tatsunoko vs capcom ) didn’t sell well, not surprised…

mvc3/umvc3 for the most part is about phishing for 1 poke into a combo WITHOUT RESETS that should basically kill that character (I wont even bring up x factor, lol)

the game has turned more into a combo video rather than an actual fighting game with strategy. - WATCH THE MATCHES IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME ITS REALLY BORING!

(I really like to use god tier teams also but) low-tier/mid-tier/high-tier mvc2 is where its at, you have to actually think about what your doing with resets and clever use of your projectiles and strategy. ( btw beating god tier teams with low tier in mvc2 feels amazing  unlike in mvc3/umvc3 where once again it feels like every character plays the same due to the tatsunoko/mvc3/umvc3 shitty game system/engines :frowning: ) that is only some of the things that imho made umvc3 fail the way it has.

rant is over…

  • goes back to playing mvc2 :coffee:

The main problem with Ultimate’s release time is that it wasn’t released after Black Friday. If they had delayed the game’s release a week, it would have at least been in the Christmas shopping season.

I guess typing about a game you hate is more exciting than playing a game you like.

True dat. God, I can’t wait for Skullgirls. I especially like how they’re trying to differentiate the characters; for example, Painwheel’s the only one with a flight mode, Parasoul is the only charge-heavy character, Ms. Fortune looks just plain crazy, etc. The graphical style is great too; one of the things that I love about MvC3 is the gorgeous graphics (The only recent fighter that looks as good is KoFXIII in my opinion), but Skullgirls’ hand-drawn animation looks really characterful and lovely, and I would totally vouch for it looking th

If there’s anything I’m hoping, it’s that the community hype for Skullgirls turns into sales. UMvC3 was directed as the community, and it apparently didn’t sell well, but UMvC3 also alienated many with its release bullshit.

Spoiler

Also, if you were trying to troll me, you should have used a game I wasn’t super excited for. :wgrin: Painwheel is by far the character I want to try out the most.

seriously , The backclash from the fiasco of meaman legend 3 has some severe consequences and we can see the result right now. For the heavy hardcore fighting community or even the people that don’t give a fuck about Megaman. The way capcom threath their fans about mml3 fiasco don’t affect them at all. For people that love this serie, they have , in majority , a very bad image of capcom . That piss a lot of people and this is a wound take will take a lot of time to recover. The two canned projects of megaman have a bigger impact over the lack of X or the bluebomber in umvsc3 . That is sure

some people mentioned here, but a lot of people fell being rip off by this game even if the price is 40$ only. It’s not the price the problem , it’s the fact this sequel was release the same years as vanilla and by the way complete obselute the first version. Vanilla was suppose to be heavily patch and to have a lot of dlc, something barely done at best . This also lead to another problem that is being constinually lies and fake promise by capcom . Some people can live with it but it’s completly annoy other people .

The online mode ( netcode ) is far to be decent at best , that is something heavily complains in vanilla .For these reasons , I’m one of the people that haven’t buy the game and i will never . Some people can dislike this comment but i prefer to support revengelabs instead of capcom . I really like capcom , specially around 1995- 2000 ( best fighting games were made at this time by them ) but this compagny turn out in something i really dislike . I will give a chance to the group that put passion and heart in their game .

Yes, those are good sales but Skyrim and Zelda will sale more than it by the end days. Skyrim so many people love it. And Zelda, Wii owners>shooter players.

Just simple knowledge. Wii games sell the most and Skyrim is selling like crazy.

What? MW3 is the single most valuable entertainment property in history. Take every game, movie, song, or record ever released and MW3 is worth more than any of them. Juggernaut television shows like The Simpsons total to more value over the series run, but no single episode (and I would highly doubt even a single entire season) comes close.

For me X-Factor is one of the greatest ironies in this game, this mechanic was in theory a comeback mechanic in order to get more equal matches in a casual envirionment, the problem is when casual players gets destroyed with lvl 3 XF in just seconds when they’re winning, by perception it doesn’t make any sense to them, maybe some players like us can deal with it in certain ways but in a casual perspective is really annoying and scares a lot of players, a mechanic that completely backfired capcom imo, XF is the real problem behind the balance of this game (off topic just for example) i see a lot of people asking for wesker nerfs when xfactor with certain characters is the real problem, problems with wesker? just let the game evolve and people will find more ways to deal with him although this would be easier without XF.

A lot of my casual friends who bought vanilla are not interested in ultimate anymore i sold my vanilla copy to a friend and only played the game 1 week and he told me that the game was easy to pick up and play but he gets frustrated by others when they use XF LV3 and gets destroyed by old vanilla players he admits also that XF is there to use by him but he doesn’t like they way it works, same happens with 3 of my others friends that went to buy Skirim, COD or even KOF XIII (this is a personal experience, don’t generalize please) because of this and other things (fan favorite characters are one of the reasons), they feel frustrated and remember that casuals plays against other casuals don’t bring the “tournament” or the “online scrub” arguments here, this game should be played only in a casual scene imo because it has a lot of problems but people takes this game to seriously (because it’s capcom duDE!!!), i respect that but this is just my point of view.
