Ultimate MvC3 potentially an ultimate sales failure - Implications?

You know, there was that whole earthquake thing that screwed up the inner workings of Capcom’s office. I think that’s part of the reason.

It would of taken 4 things for UMVC3 to sell well.

  • Include the 90’s cartoon guys. Yeah, as a true marvel fan I generally dislike them but even I was questioning why no Venom, Gambit, etc.
  • Include more modes besides online versus and training. We really needed that awesome story we were promised, co-op would of helped, in addition to some sort of survival.
  • More character customization, yeah pointless I know but it would bring in the casuals if you could put jill in a bikini or some shit like that.
-Heroes and Heralds should of been at Launch.

I still can’t believe you have to fork over 10 dollars for shuma and jill, even if you have ultimate.

Sweet company, bro.

im pretty sure mmx fans will send capcom plenty of hate for years. Im pretty sure venom would be nice with venom web super combos into x-factor into his venom fang super

No matter what direction they decided to take with the DLC characters they would have lost.

On one hand, people purchasing the game without the DLC feel cheated because they have to pay another 10 dollars for the full cast.
On the other hand, people who originally purchased the DLC characters for 10 dollars would have felt cheated since the characters they purchased would come pre-unlocked.

Either path they chose someone was going to be upset. I think they chose the lesser of two evils, personally.

“Shuma and Jill are so underepresented, buff them please!”

“…I ain’t buying that shit! Fuck Capcom, jewing us out of money.”

(Jill was fine in vanilla. upper mid tier character. she might even STILL be good. shuma suffers from a flawed design nothing but the herpest and derpest of buffs could have really fixed. yeah, it sucks, but was he ever good anyway? he’s a fanservice character for people who wanted MVC2 nostalgia. he was ass in the game too.)

Man, some people get really defensive around here when people have a gripe with MvC or Capcom in general. I’d hate to imagine the reactions from some of you guys if you were Skullgirls fans, Arcana Hearts fans or BlazBlue fans lol.

They also said that they didn’t want to do a DLC update because Japan is apprehensive towards DLC(even though Mahvel’s fanbase is 70% American). Also, Marvel’s licensing madness really messed with Capcom’s release schedule. I don’t think Niitsuma and his team wanted the game out there so early at all, but they didn’t have much of a choice.

I wouldn’t trust many corporations besides Valve, select console devs and some PC devs when it comes to this sort of subject. Shit, we never even got a clear answer on spectator mode beyond “we are working on it” from Niitsuma and look how that turned out lol.

In the pre release stage for MvC3 where the character roster was unknown these people would be fans just like you or me. Don’t start tossing the word “fanboy” around just because people are upset that their characters couldn’t make it. That kind of thing comes off as really confrontational and it makes the site less friendly to everyone.

This. Why should people get the characters for free when I had to pay for them?

I find it hard to believe that Capcom has a problem with model morphing characters when they pretty much begged Marvel to have Shuma-Gorath (Who is oh-so-popular and beloved, you know?).

In fact, it’s the exact same evidence people who bought vanilla were complaining about in Ultimate.

“Why should they get the new version without paying 60 bucks up front like I did?”

MW3, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, and the other 20,000 AAA titles coming out at the same time probably hurt sales. Say what you want about those games but most people are willing to shell out their hard earned money on new games than expansions to games they already own.

The thing is that the way to milk more money is to leave the dlc. Why give something for free in the next title when they can charge you for it?

Don’t think in terms of “not making the fans mad” that’s definitely not the way capcom thinks.

And if it doesn’t sell that well then maybe mvc3 as a whole didn’t seem like a good enough game to buy it’s sequel from a casual fan’s point of view. It’s not rocket science.

The new blazblue comes with all the dlc characters included, the company felt they had gotten enough money from those dlc and decided not to keep profiting like that. Or maybe it was more expensive to keep the dlc online since the characters weren’t selling too well, who the hell knows.

I think money is the issue, always.

bwahahahahahahaha! this makes me laugh! Shuma’s a mid tier beast if you play him correctly. You should see the trails of tears I create when I play him online.

To be honest, they probably could’ve done better if they made better choices when it came to their fighter selection. Rocket Raccoon is an MvC2 Amingo-type character, and no one back in the day would’ve wanted to pay extra money to have fucking Amingo in the game (no matter how fun he was to play). I know why they picked raccoon - They wanted to have characters that weren’t tried before, that they could have creative freedom with, and all that good stuff that is conducive to a good fighting game. However, if they wanted more sales, they should’ve appealed to casuals by giving them what they wanted. 90’s x-men characters, Megaman, the Fantastic Four, etc. Instead they went with utterly obscure characters that half the gaming population doesn’t recognize, and the other half wasn’t excited about. Well that’s great, but at the end of the day they have to live with the sales numbers.

If you’re given Marvel’s library of characters and you pick Rocket Racoon over just about any other Marvel character in existence, then you shouldn’t be surprised that the sales numbers will reflect your poor decision making. It’s like buying the WWE license, having limited roster space, and picking the Brooklyn Brawler to be in your game over Stone Cold Steve Austin. Don’t get me wrong, Raccoon is a blast to play, and he’s a unique addition to the game; But the fact is that shit doesn’t matter a bit when it comes to sales. Only name recognition does.

Reasons why this game didn’t do too well.
1)WHY RELEASE IT IN NOVEMEBER WHEN LIKE 100 TRIPLE A TITlES WERE COMMING OUT? Jesus Christ. Really? Releasing it the same month that Skyrim was comming out?

  1. Like it or not, but the masses like 90’s Marvel and Megaman. Gaurenteed if both were in, this game would be cashing in more. To be honest, if it had 90’s marvel and Megaman I would be hyped as all hell, but it didn’t, was I mad? No. Indifferent? Pretty much. Of course I agree with the path capcom took with Character diversity, but it looks like the masses didn’t.

3)no real “modes” were added. I’m not going to count Galactacus mode because that was just plain stupid.

People like Megaman? Sales numbers prove otherwise? That or they like the character but not enough to support the franchise? I mean it’s not like Capcom stopped making Megaman games because they kept racking in shitloads of cash.

i knew that when i posted this some fanboy would be like “HUE, WELL I WRECK WITH HIM, SO HE MUST BE GOOD.”

I’m not saying he’s not passable, I’ve got swag combos with Hsien-ko, for example. I’m saying that compared to the top tier characters he lacks… well, a lot of everything, and harsh hitstun/damage scaling hurts him really hard, naw mean?

He’s a solid mid tier character, the only thing he really lacks is a way to get into the opponent safely, But cover his approach with an assist then he’s fine.

lol, no megaman in umvc3 affected the sales and lack of 1p modes? even though mvc3 sold what, 2 million copies without megaman and basically no single players modes? stfu about that gay fandom shit and go back to capcom unity. God bless the internet. Retards can’t graduate high school anymore but they find their way to post on forums somehow.

This game didn’t sell well mainly for 1 reason, people don’t want to buy the game and an update which is still 90% the same in a single year. Vanilla was 60$, DLC is 10$, and the update cost 40$. If you bought this game like that, you paid 100$ for basically the same game and NO one likes to feel duped\cheated. God forbid if you bought both strategy guides and were talking 150$. I’m honestly amazed that they kept up this shady business style for so long and only NOW does it bite them in the ass.

and since ultimate was released so much earlier than expected, ultimate\vanilla sales need to be lumped together. Especially since they were released in the same year and when you add it up like that, the mvc3 series has sold 2.5-3 million copies in its first year and that’s pretty successful for a fighting game. You can hardly count ultimate as a separate game when its 95% the same as vanilla. New characters, small tweaks to the engine. Its not like they spent the same amount of time making ultimate as they did with the vanilla version. Probably took less than half the time it took to make vanilla so that means bigger profit margins.

another thing capcom is fucking up on is the DLC. People get quite salty over DLC characters because back in the day, shit like that used to be free. DLC needs to be DLC music, DLC stages, DLC costumes and perhaps a bigger customizable option and just allow people to download costume packs and go ape shit with their characters. You could easily create thousands and thousands of alternate 3d models to use for costumes in this game and charge for it. People want to be individual, so why not charge them for it? this method of DLC does not affect the tournament standard and it actually gives capcom more ways to make money off DLC.

and lastly in this day and age, you NEED a good net code to make people play ESPECIALLY for competitive games. When the net code is so bad that most players just stay away from it, you’ve failed as a game. People don’t buy COD so they can only play campaign mode solo. Those games are designed for competition and online play, that’s why they thrive and sell well. Capcom needs to tap into the ability to catch the players who work a full day and just want to chill out with a few games online, which is what CoD\fps market is so good @.

Hopefully Capcom gets their shit together and listens to Inafune before it’s too late.

Hopefully capcom reinstates Clover studios, let’s Marvel grow, fixes SF x T, leaves SF4 the fuck alone, Megaman reboots, cancels DmC, announces DMC5, gives me money.

Not happening : /
