Ultimate MvC3 potentially an ultimate sales failure - Implications?

Venom is iconic (Seriously, fan demand got him shoved into a movie even though it ruined the plot structure), Gambit is memorable if only for his unusual powers and appearance, I don’t even know Psylocke outside of her being a useful assist.

I saw one on Comedy Central and FOX when I was watching the Cardinals game on sunday.

The reason why box office mojo doesn’t use worldwide gross in their ranking is because it is inaccurate for the most part. http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=comicbookadaptation.htm

Not to nitpick, but to a lot of RE veterans feel RE4 forever changed the franchise in the worst way possible and act like the franchise ended with Code Veronica. It redefined the third person shooter genre while simultaneously destroying the survival horror aspect. Personally I like all the games (even 5…sorta), but it was Capcom or rather Shinji Mikami wanting to try something new that made RE4 the groundbreaking success it was. I’m not going to deny RE5 was a step backwards in some ways, but let’s not pretend RE4 was business as usual it was a completely different Resident Evil experience at the time of release.

That’s cute, but I still don’t see why you deny the popularity of Venom. If it’s his oversaturation in the 90s that’s fine, but if Marvel announced tomorrow Eddie Brock will be back as Venom in a brand new series you better believe that shit is selling like hot cakes. Unless some god awful/unknown creative team is behind it, even then the first issue would sell based on name recognition alone. He is forever iconic, the only reason they probably didn’t want him in the game is to avoid stepping on any hype the Lizard might get from the reboot. If anything from a purely creative standpoint the last thing Marvel wants is people demanding Venom again because it would be impossible to silence…again.

And this is where the argument falls.

The past Capcom Marvel fighters were used as PR as well. A known fact. Through in several other characters as a way to promote the characters and you know, make them as popular as people claim.

And Marvel did put in chars that people knew in the original.

Storm, Magneto, Logan, Spidey, Hulk, Cap, Doom, Pool…etc are all popular characters.

Marvel has always used the vs series as promotion.

Nothing new here.

Reason I say Venom isn’t iconic is because… well who is part of his rogue’s gallery? Spider-Man, Carnage… and I dunno who else. I could look up other people he’s fought, but I dunno. For an iconic character, one can instantly tell you who his enemies are. Popular, not denying that. But has he been developed enough that he could actually be in a video game without Spider-Man (not talking about MvC here, but just a regular solo adventure game)? I don’t think he’s quite there yet.

They dropped the ball when they decided to make people pay for Shuma Gorath and Evil Jill. They aren’t exactly strong selling points.

Incorrect. People that don’t care about online and/or people that play tournament/casuals are more open to get a pirated game. Don’t assume everyone cares about online functionality. It’s a quite large number of people that includes a few known players.

RE4 was to RE3 what MvC3 should have been to MvC2. Capcom wasn’t trying to destroy the survival horror aspect - that was something else entirely which I’ll explain later - instead, it worked to revolutionize RE and create a new atmosphere altogether with new characters, new enemies, and skanky ass teenagers. Don’t get me wrong though, I agree with you concerning it as an actual continuation of RE. I’d say it was its own RE sub-series altogether and RE5 was just salt on the wound.

Though a lot of things made RE4 less of a horror-survival than it’s predecessors, the worst offender of them all had to be a useful control scheme. Now this may be highly opinionated, but playing Dead Space on a PS3 as opposed to playing it on a PC is a hell of a lot scarier. RE4 was the same way, except unlike Dead Space, it had to program the AI to be clumsy so you could actually have a fighting chance while fidgeting with the laser sight. Factor in the lovely kick that could clear out multiple enemies and you’ve got a game meant to give you a ride into the story line with zero challenge ahead of you.

No challenge means no scare, no matter how creepy the enemies are.

P.S. I don’t care what other people say, I honestly saved and quit for periods of time because I didn’t want to continue. Also, Silent Hill killed the Resident Evil 1 and 2 atmosphere for me.

Tourney players = BIG MINORITY right there.

Also we’re talking Umvc3 not vanilla if someone pirated vanilla for it’s offline feature (not counting tourney player because they are the minority)…well i dont think this guy will bother with Umvc3 lol.

(as H&H will need a psn or xboxlive account)

Still, at least RE4 had some fear factor. RE5 was basically completely devoid of it. I played through it and didn’t find anything scary at all, and I get scared very easily. Hopefully future RE games will actually feel scary.

Oh, and another reason to hate Capcom: not localizing Ace Attorney Investigations 2. Still bitter over that considering I’ve been a loyal fan of the series. =/

Stupid pirates ruining the franchise…

That argument applies to the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as well, but I don’t think you could deny they’re iconic.

Right but those are villains who’ve never had their own comic book. Villains are part of a rogues gallery but don’t really have one of their own. They’re focused on a single hero/team (though Green Goblin has been branching out these past couple of years taking on the Avengers, heck almost everyone with his own team of Dark Avengers). Venom made the transition to an anti-hero, and got his own comic book, but I still can’t tell you who his enemies are other then Spider-Man and Carnage.

That’s because his comic was crap. People remember Venom most as a Spider-Man villain/anti-hero, not as a hero of his own comic.

I still would prefer the Green Goblin (Most famous villain, glider offers opportunities for a very unique moveset) or Doctor Octopus (Around Venom level of famousness, robot arms also make a unique moveset).

I’m talking about UMvC3 as well. It was pirated 2 or so days after release. You’re still doubting people that are willing to play free games at the expense of online features. I’m not advocating piracy in anyway however, just stating truths.

We already have Iron Patriot as an Iron Man alt :stuck_out_tongue:

Gambit was in a 2009 movie
Venom was in a 2007 movie
Cyclops was in a 2002 movie

Juggernaut, Cyclops, Gambit all made the cover of “X-men” destiny game released in 2011…
How are these characters irrelevant?

Cyclops isn’t irrelevant at all (He’s got a huge role in the current X-men canon, since he split the team with Wolvie), but he is boring as sin. Yay, *another *Shoto.

everybody is a shoto in UMvC3
