Ultimate MvC3 potentially an ultimate sales failure - Implications?

Putting Venom in the game doesn’t do anything for Marvel in the grand scheme of things. Marvel doesn’t care about satisfying the 2 dozen casual fans that want Venom. They do care about promoting the characters they actually have big plans for in their universe (with the exception of Rocket Raccoon who I think was Capcom’s decision all the way). Marvel is a business. Selling 2 dozen more copies of UMvC3 does nothing for them in the long run.

I understand that Marvel is putting in characters to promote them but I think they should do a bit of both. I know Venom wont raise sales drastically but it would be a start. I think they should’ve put in a popular character for every unpopular character. Basically, why only build fans instead of building fans and getting sales from the more popular characters. But my point is, the current Venom doesnt really matter since they could put in whichever one they want and the Venom “fans” would just see FT Venom as a new (cooler?) looking Venom.

Actually from what I’ve heard Marvel is trying to push the Guardians of the Galaxy for a movie and they will be appearing in the new season of the Avengers cartoon as well. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if he was also chosen, (along with his play style) so both sides had an animal character. So if I’m right about that you can blame Amaterasu for him being in the game.

Man, I don’t know what the fuck is going on in here anymore. There should be no problem with compromise up in this bitch. Marvel comic fans acting like this is a comic book website need to get it straight and they need to stop acting like Marvel comics would go bankrupt if they give us ONE or TWO veterans for our fighting game. Capcom could give us Strider so I know there should be no problem with dropping a veteran or two our way.

With that said… this game has a lot of other stuff working against it that is way larger than character problems and I detail them below. Everyone needs to keep in mind that we don’t know ANYTHING about the sales numbers because VGchartz is not reliable. Ya’ll are getting yourselves way too hyped and angry over nothing.

Yeah, NPD monthly data used to be awesome. Now it is worth shit to folks who don’t work in the sales department of their respective companies. It’ll be months before we find out how UMvC3 sold if it’s performance is bad.

The drop off rate was even worse for MvC3. About sixteen regular MvC2 players in my circle bought the game and by month 2 only me and my cousin were left playing it. Pretty bad attach rate…

Don’t try to give them an out by saying that “MVC3 is especially going to have done most of its sales during Vanilla because of the circumstances and the type of game it is” because that is a BS excuse. They COULD have taken another four months to properly tweak and update the game. They COULD have added online training mode or replays. They COULD have gone with Niitsuma’s initial plan for TWENTY characters, but they didn’t. This game is a BIG step up for MvC3 in terms of balance and character viability, but I’m not gonna give Capcom suits an out for fucking over Niitsuma’s team budgetwise and timewise(compared to Ono’s team, that is). The game was rushed out the window much to our detriment.

Yeah, I’m a SALTY ass Hsien-Ko fan and even I recognize that the game wouldn’t sell 200k month 1 just because she got better. Most of SRK’s character/balance complaints are really small stuff. The game being rushed and released so early in the busiest period of the year full of juggernauts is what REALLY did it in. The game needed a few months in the oven if only so that they could have some distance from Skyrim/Call of Duty/Battlefield.

The stupid shit being said in this thread is crazy. You got a lot of stuff right here. Marvel sees this game as an advertising opportunity and they are taking full advantage of it even if the fans of the series don’t like it. The part that annoys me is how EVERYONE is picking sides like we can’t fucking compromise. I’d be TOTALLY okay if they went Strange/Fist/Ghost/Nova/Psylocke/Venom, but they couldn’t even give us ONE veteran. There is no excuse for that when Capcom could compromise by giving us Strider.

Also, I agree with you on the number of character additions. It was a weaksauce update in that regard. Not nearly enough for a Mahvel game and the fact that Niitsuma wanted more characters should be proof enough.

Ken fans make me lol. That guy won’t sell many more copies compared to most Capcom characters. Most Ken fans already bought the game for extraordinary Ryu, Chunners, Akuma and Viper. Street Fighter has four reps and three of them are very strong characters in the game.

Yeah, Marvel comic fans coming in here and acting all high and mighty is stupid as hell. Would it be so damned horrible if fans of the GAME got Venom, Gambit or Psylocke in the update? One or two measly slots?

Jeez…

See… this is not necessary. Compromise a bit and everyone can get some. We don’t need SIX veterans. Give people at least one and bring another two for pringles edition.

Like what other people said Skyrim and CoD are completely different games from UMvC3. Yes I could agree that these games definitely blocked new players for trying it out, but it makes no sense that it would deter anybody that’s already brought the original MvC3, and that’s the real issue. The point is that the people that brought the original MvC3 didn’t like it, and/or thought that the UMvC3 wasn’t enough to justify it’s price value.

Is UMvC3 better than MvC3? Definitely, I don’t think there’s much argument about that. However Capcom was trying to dress up a simple update as a whole new game and thought they could get away with that stuff in 2011 but not anymore.

Marvel has a good lineup here

Ok for one thing Marvel does not care what characters fighting game, or heck even comic fans want in this game, nor should they, this is nothing but advertising for characters they want to push. (Yeah I know it sucks but its true) Its also possible that much like Megaman they are holding the big names off for DLC (I highly doubt we will get another version like Ultimate or AE, heck DLC characters might not even happen due to low sales) so they can make more money (which IMO is very very likely).

We already got those veterans though, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Hulk, IM, Magnus, Sent, Spidey, Storm, Wolvie and Shuma. They might have not been the veterans we wanted (and by we I mean the community as a whole), but to say that we didn’t get any veterans in our game isn’t the whole truth, though I also understand that you meant returning veterans in Ultimate ;). Now, before someone chews me out for saying this, let’s take a look at the Capcom side. We have 8 returning veterans (counting strider and jill), versus Marvel’s 10. This number goes up to 11 if we count TvC returning characters as well as MvC2 characters. I shouldn’t really be counting Jill as a returning veteran though, seeing as she’s a completely different character. So both sides have 10 veterans.

It’s okay man, we can be salty together. We will go get Noble Cactus and we can sing songs about how much better HK is in VS, while drinking hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows by a campfire.

I agree, 8 more characters would have been nice. Maybe Ammy wouldn’t have the Talbain alt if Niitsuma had gotten some more time to work on the game.

Hawkeye solo book actually sell a lot (he’s in to his 4th or 5th mini-serie i believe) the Avengers book no one read…ughhh it’s the “main” Avenger book (sell more than New Avengers i believe). so no not so much Irrelevant.

Venom, his inclusion in the 3rd movie by popular demand* worked so well didnt it ? *
And that was 5 years ago. Again people age and the cattered age market for MVC is more for the <20 year old that the 30 year old .

As for Cable coming back…well i’m looking forward to x-cution, but, from what we know, Cable mayve will not last (seemed to return as nothing more than a Techno-Organic zombie).

Irrelevant super hero in the game would have been Jean Grey maybe? (and we would all be better without Dark Phoenix :P). She died in 2003 and hasnt resurected in Jean Grey form since, Rachel Summers or Hope Summers would have been better (well…hope from a relevance P.O.V. but seeing that she isnt “exclusively” phoenix and has shit control over her powers, Rachel, gameplay wise would have played the same. Exept, no dark phoenix :P).

Also SteelHawk, we arent saying “marvel will go bankrupt if they please SRK people wanting veteran” i’m saying Marvel, doesnt care what the SRK people want because the SRK people is not the market they wish to cater to  Sadly, because, even if i’m a big comics reader, they are a few “veteran” from both side that i’ll be really happy to see.

But at least i recognize it’s not “something that the game should have done, and since they havent it’s why it’s selling bad bouhou”. And it pisses me a little when people say “oh blaah, no one likes/know [Nova,Deadpool, RR etc…]” When they are some of the most popular marvel character from the last 5 years. (Also, hipster note “i liked deadpool before he was cool”).

You guys also forget there are tons of people out there willing to pirate this game. *“Why pay another 40$ for this game when I can download it for free” *is a common mentality for these people. It definitely took away from sales.

With this and everything else that has been said, I really thought this game would sell more. Guess I was wrong.

Phoenix is coming back in a big way, and Jean most likely with it. One of the major points of the Marvel .1 series is Nova (who is most likely Richard Rider, though we don’t know for sure) warning everyone about it.

Not really. Pirated game dont have access to PSN and Xboxlive, most of the people interested enough in the game to play it want it for online.

(

The Phoenix force is coming back as seen in the .1, it’s for a nova mini-serie in an alternate universe…not so much in a big way tho…it’s like saying Jean Grey was back because in uncanny X-force they went to the AoA where she was alive (as phoenix).

I cant remember where i read that Nova (earth-616) would be back with Thanos from the dead cancerverse hmmm.

Wait… how could the game have only moved 30K if there are 46K players on the leaderboards?

Although, the fact that there are only 46K players on the leaderboards says something in itself, as does the fact that the bottom 20000 are all Beginners…

Beginner rank has no meaning in term of level.

Lot’s of people are disgusted by early ranked because of the ragequitter population.

Also with spectator now in lobby, they are more favored.

Also the ability to see the connection of who you are going to play against and the rematch feature in friendly is good.

Yeah, I don’t give a shit about the returning veterans. They are SUPPOSED to return in a nine month sequel. Additions to the game should consider what the fans were asking for and Capcom listened pretty well if you ask me.

Can we tell campfire stories about the wicked NeoG demon that haunts low tier warriors and quirky characters while buffing anyone with a trencoat? It’ll be a grand old time under the stars!

I got over that pretty quickly. It gets a little annoying when people try to belittle the opinions of fans who wanted their classic Marvel characters in the game though. I also feel the burn because several of my friends who I played hundreds of times in MvC2 online dumped the game early on. The character reveals did nothing whatsoever for them.

Venom was not the problem in that shitty ass movie.

I’m not saying that. I’m saying that people are going overboard just because some GAMERS want to see classic characters in a FIGHTING GAME series. Also, SRK is only one community. Tons of people on Capcom Unity and the internet in general wanted to see Strange, Iron Fist and Ghost Rider alongside vets like Venom/Psylocke/Gambit, but they couldn’t get a single vet even though Capcom tossed us one with Strider.

Marvel doesn’t have to care, but it is shitty for us because we are the ones buying the game in mass. Don’t ever get it twisted by thinking that the populace for MvC is half comic audience and half gaming audience because that is a lethal mistake to make. They are not selling a comic book or a commercial. Capcom is trying to sell me a game and that is what I’m looking for. The game(UMvC3) is alright, but don’t think that Marvel treating it like something else will help it’s sales against dedicated games for gamers in a month like November where Call of Duty, BF3 and Skyrim reign supreme.

I have no idea if the sales are low and I’m not really cheering for them to be great or bad. All I know is that Marvel is not helping to make this a better game for fans of the series if they only want to cater to their comic fans. Gotta give a little to take a little.

This is so true, but when you mention the lack of love for the new Marvel characters by the FGC and say that the player base wanted more MvC2 vets, Marvel fanboys flame you and say, “you’re not a Marvel fan!” and “stop living in the 90s”

It’s a fact that more GAMERS of this genre want and recognize those “90s characters” than the shameless self-promoting cast that Marvel force-fed us, I get that they want to promote certain characters from their franchise, but god damn! At least give the fighting game fans some Characters they wanted, since this is a fighting game!

To say that Marvel’s decision to exclude some of the most iconic characters from this game’s franchise and their own, didn’t affect sales would be Marvel dick-riding at it’s finest and just plain ignorant.

I think Marvel included enough iconic characters in Vanilla MvC3 that they didn’t feel like they needed to include more for Ultimate. (Though saying venom/Gambit/Psylocke are iconic is quite the stretch).

To be honest, I think any casual gamer that thought about not buying the game because of the lack of certain Marvel characters, ended up buying the game because of the inclusion of Strider/Phoenix Wright so it wouldn’t have affected sales one way or the other.

And let’s face it. Venom/Gambit/Psylocke don’t make the sell. It’s Spider-Man and Wolverine that make the sell. And those have already been included.

What I found kinda surprising is how Marvel didn’t put the Lizard in there. He’s going to be in the next Spider-man movie if I’m not mistaken.

I tried to hype this game up to my casual friend. He said:
“Why is this game coming out so soon?”
“Where are Mega Man and Gambit?”
“Why the “new” stages are just new versions of the old ones?”
“I’m going to buy the version that has Mega man and Gambit, is it coming out next year?”

Casuals pretty much hate Capcom now. They milk RE series with mediocre games, abandon Mega Man, resell their games with minor changes (Dead Rising, fighters) and ruined DMC. They are trying something new like Asura’s Wrath and that dragon thing, but Capcom’s name doesn’t exactly mean quality anymore.

Oh and they keep releasing half-assed collections and HD versions. Seriously how many times can you sell Resident Evil 4?

Wow for a guy going around talking a lot of shit about people not knowing their facts you’re doing a bang up job yourself. Spider-MAn 3 is the highest grossing movie in the trilogy with 890M worldwide which is over 100M more than the second movie made at 781M worldwide.

This is… Very much so kinda true.

It surprises me how a company like Nintendo takes a game 25 years old and still manages to create a masterpiece (And somewhat prior-ok attempts) through Skyward Sword. Then you jump on over to Capcom and you look at what they’ve done with MvC, Resident Evil, Megaman, this new ‘trying way too hard’ Asura’s Wrath, and Street Fighter.

Though I never played MvC2 enough to be competitive in it, I acknowledge that a lot of the ‘veteran’ players are not fond of MvC3. Honestly, they’re the ones who Capcom should be trying to market MvC3 to, not casual players. MvC2 was a goldmine, they should be working AROUND it, not completely revamping it.

Resident Evil 1 through 4 were all superb games in their own way. However… RE5 was a complete disappointment. For instance: What the hell was with Chris’ biceps? Why was his damn forehead so big? Where the **** was Leon? Who is this stupid cunt Sheva? Why is Jill a ****ing Power Ranger? Did they make Wesker a big old fruitcake on purpose or do I remember him wearing crocs and the most reflective trenchcoat ever? Why the hell did I only spend 6 hours playing that game? Why would they force me to use ass AI if I didn’t have a little brother or internet? WTF?!

I don’t even want to talk about Megaman…

Asura’s Wrath looks cool. It might even border on Kratos originality in terms of character portrayal. Here’s to hoping Capcom doesn’t flop on it.

I never liked Street Fighter so I can’t comment really, but what I can make a remark on is the fact that the art style for SFIV does not fit it whatsoever. It is truly the one thing keeping me from buying the game. Gimmie Sprites, gimmie Two Dimensional 3D, give me something other than what Capcom thought would fit such a grand series.
