I was going to have some more tournament footage for everyone tonight, but I have a funny story instead.
SF4 was the focal event of the day because some prestigious Japanese player named Gamer Bee was in town and playing in the local tournament after a nearby national he attended, so the one PS3 with UMvC3 DLC was occupied by SF4 for the stream. They called my match first, but suddenly realized their folly, acting quickly to remedy the problem by immediately attempting to download both DLC characters on the other console running the game and setting my match temporarily aside.
The PS3 was unprepared, for they first had to download a 28MB update for PSN to access the PlayStation Store to purchase the characters. It did not take long for the bandwidth to take its toll on the stream. Gamer Bee’s big matches were lagging on the stream because of the massive download, pissing off the audience at home, and forcing a pause of the matches so they could finish the PlayStation Store download.
Everybody was abuzz with impatience, frustration and anxiety; all of which were augmented by the fact that the characters simply would not download. They first needed to use someone’s PSN account to access the store, which apparently did not work, so they made a new one instead. Not the swiftest process. They then needed the funds necessary to purchase the DLC, but the two credit cards they tried did not work. One had been overcharged with purchases earlier in the day, and the other remained unexplained. In an act of desperation, one man stepped forth and volunteered his PSN account complete with both characters as readily available DLC. No one foresaw the next complication, being that he had already used his account to share such content with five other PS3’s, making the transaction impossible.
As all of their valiant efforts failed, one offer still stood, being the 360 that had the DLC. Without a converter box, though, my PS1 controller wired through a USB cable would not be compatible; and I refused to use a 360 controller, especially after my coincidental run-in with one trying to play the same game earlier in the day.
In the end, I withdrew from the tournament completely refunded, and was promised that all consoles have DLC by next week. That nice man who had offered his account also straight up gave me his converter box because he said he plays on a stick now and no longer needed it. The moral of the story is to make sure all consoles set up at a tournament have DLC, or else you will have a swarm of unhappy patrons and a laggy stream.
