ULTIMATE Balance/Tier talk thread

I think characters who play their keepaway from the sky like Trish are a little easier to deal with because we can basically shoot lightning bolts at them. Characters with strong horizontal zoning are a bigger problem now though because of the air-dash nerf. Hawkeye is probably his worst matchup at the moment, probably 4:6 or worse. I’d say Trish is pretty much 5:5 now. Taskmaster probably has a slight edge now, and Magneto would too if not for his own nerfs but Magneto is probably 5:5 as well. Arthur would probably be a problem if he wasn’t so immobile (a death wish against Zero) and he might still yet prove to be a threat.

No not really, and anyways, there’s a difference between ‘extra scary at xf3 (Akuma, Phoenix)’ and 'only any good at XF3 AND gold armor (Arthur).

And wait, Xtatic are you saying you believe Phoenix people only thought Dark Phoenix was God tier because of XF3?

Edit: anyways Arthur goes back to results. Except for that one random Lvl3 kill on F.Champ, he hasn’t shown any real power at any real event… as compared to say, Viper. Do you know how long it took Viper to get any respect?

Hmm… As a heavy adovcate of Frank tech, mind sending me a PM about this thing you’re working on? At the very least, I can be of some assistance in testing its viability/plausibility.

Well, phoenix was an extremely amazing character as normal phoenix and was really underrated. People didn’t play her while abusing all of her ridiculous tools. Toward the end of vanilla, I ran a phoenix on point team, and it was incredibly fun and surprisingly rewarding. Anything you see your opponent do, phoenix rage on reaction, xfactor teleport, dive kick, dead character. Next character comes in, call good assists, healing field, triple dive kick telepot mixup, win. Xfactor definitely did make dark phoenix a lot better than she was meant to be though. You couldn’t be a total fraud and play non xfactor dark phoenix in vanilla. Also, I think arthur was scarier in xf3 than akuma tbh, atleast until his armor put him into a hard knockdown lmao.

Don’t put words in my mouth. She was great without XF but broken with it. How many times did you see Phoenix players NOT using XF with her? C’mon now.

And Arthur was crappy in Vanilla. He was useful, but still not past bottom tier. I never argued his tier placement in Vanilla, but still tried to show people he had his uses. He has instant overheads in this game. He doesn’t just rely on chip now. Much better character.

Well the implication was that people counted XF3 when tiering Phoenix, and I’d argue that wasn’t true :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways arthur is likely better, but how much we’ll really have to see. I hope he gets a good visible advocate so we can see what he’s capable of in a real setting.

I’m keeping my mouth shut for now. Not out of greed though…

… How do i put this… For every Javelin Glitch type thing I figure out, there are a hundred more that would make me look like a total buffoon.

Such is the way of the lab though. Discovery and Failure are two sides of the same coin.

And that’s exactly why your tech videos are so good, you think in the correct way to develop new and interesting things.

I have to agree with Nini about Magneto to a degree.
He does feel like a bit more of an old man, he still hurts though (corner +mashed tempest still goes for 775~800k for 1 bar) . His movement just isn’t as scary anymore like it used to be. You can pick out the jump L and the tridash fakes much easier, making him much easier to block. airdash nerf hurt him bad here overall not just in his tri-dash game

I will say this… whenever I face doom as magneto, I have to ask myself seriously, why work so hard when there is Doom, who for not much more work is just as scary, and gives me better assist options outside of just a beam assist.

Dante turned into an anime character for all of those “EZ-mode” inputs he has now, but becides that, as Nini among others has shown, He’s still Dante and Still going to be a force to be reckoned with going forward.

Buffed Zero, I have no words to describe my disgust with capcom for this abomination of a character.

Meh, even then, I don’t think Zero has any bad matchups. Buster blows through every projectile, from there, you can get in for free with command dash backed by an assist. Might be my team but when I play against hawkeye, I manage to outzone him with Hadangeki buster cancels and drones.

Hidden missiles is annoying as fuck for Zero though, the one time I felt I was at a disadvantage was against a Dorm/Doom player, and that was more because I wasn’t sure how to approach the match.

Dante didn’t lose anything IMO that could take him out of S tier. Still gets IMO two best special moves in the game when in DT and now has backtrack double air dash for fake cross ups and triple jump for extended combos and better lame out capabilities with thunderbolt. Having a strong battery first so Dante can come out second bursting with a bunch of meter for DT is the way to go now.

Hammer was just random hurp durp and shaving off SOME of the invincibility does not throw him down tiers like removing b slash invince does for wolvie. The invincibility is still there you just have to place it in a really good spot. If you do it’s still an anti mix up move and they still get hard knocked down into high damage combo. Hammer still retains 9 of its 16 or so invincible frames from Vanilla and the mash on L input change to get it to come out easier/faster kinda buffs it back up because now the move technically starts up faster. Make sure you have a brain and it’s the same hurp durp get off me whereas no matter which way you slice it wolvie’s bslash is a completely neutered move in comparison.

Execution requirement doesn’t really throw a character down the tiers. I’d say you more so have to just adjust which normals/specials you use for his bnb’s. The timing isn’t really much different IMO once you change up your bnb’s. Plus if anything stuff is easier now because style cancels can be done by just mashing on buttons now instead of doing double hadoken or DP motions. His bold cancel timing has become more lenient also to the point where I never drop stinger BC teleport anymore when I used to plenty more often in vanilla.

Magnetos rushdown game got better, come at me.

Also, Arthur getting an instant overhead does not move him up the tier lists at all in my book. If you let arthur get in a situation to use an overhead you made a horrible decision somewhere. It’s such a non-factor in any reasonable match.

I think this makes the most sense so far in the game.
S:
Phoenix (sadly still S-tier)
Vergil (The better twin, has everything, even oroboros)
Dante (most of his combos still work? He is still S tier then)
Nova (has literally everything except for a teleport)
Wesker (C’mon its Wesker)
Strider (Made of paper but has great teleports, wave dash, assist, mix ups)
Dr. Doom (Footdive!)

A:
Dormammu (meteors always come out? and u can get your powers in the air? LOL)
C. Viper
Zero
Cpt. America (Shield slash, double jump, invincible cross up, relaunches what doesn’t he have now?)
Hawkeye (keep away, damage, and lvl 1 grabbity squeeze)
Storm (The new magnus?)
Taskmaster
Nemesis (I’m calling it now, secret A tier. It seems like only Combo and Desk like him.)

B:
Spencer (death from above is pretty ambiguous)
Deadpool (I like his teleport buff, but is inconsistent with 3rd one)
Ryu (Ordinary guy is now extraordinary)
Akuma
Sentinal (Has he ever been bad? srsly)
Skrull (Did you see that guy who played skrull against Pchamp?)
Ammy (air dash nerf really hurt her)
Trish
Felicia (air delta kicks are pretty nice)
Wolverine (No more invincibility on his herp-slash, you gotta be honest with him now)
Magneto (it seems like his age has caught up with him)
Firebrand (until we see some good tech)

C:
Dr. Strange (Cant do much of anything, just a fast teleport)
Iron Fist (No air game but does a lot of damage)
Chris
Hulk
Rocket Raccoon
Haggar
Ghost Rider
X-23
Iron man
She-Hulk (she feels so heavy and slow now)
Spiderman

D:
Morrigan
Joe
Tron
Chun-Li
Phoenix Wright (He takes to damn long to set up)
Arthur

F:
Shuma-Gorath
Jill (Marvel and capcom both hate dlc characters)
Modok
Hsien-ko
Thor

The anomaly: Frank West (Really impossible to place cuz he needs a set up that i think is possible not sure if it is viable)

Oh, then how do you plan to hit Arthur then? Outzone him when he is gold? Maybe, if you had lots of meter and beam supers. You are eventually going to have to come at him, so you just put yourself into an instant overhead situation. Not only that, but superjump canceled J.S is really fast and far reaching, and if you push block it, he will just chip you out anyways.

There’s no way to play the game in a correct fashion if you account for solo play. No character in the game can reach their full potential without assists.

Jill, MODOK, Thor, Shuma and Hsien-ko below PW and Tron… hands you a flame shield

You have a very strange scenario in your head if you think a character putting pressure on you puts that character in a situation to get hit with an instant overhead. Maybe it’s just because I’m in the mindset of playing characters with air-dashes, but I simply cant even comprehend how, while having pressure applied to him, arthur can do anything but pushblock, much less do a mix-up as the slowest character in the game.

That makes no sense - characters don’t fight one on one unassisted like in CVS2 or something. Characters use assists, and it’s not always equal in terms of what assists do for one character vs. another.

Additionally, duos are the opposite of random - you pick your team at character select. That’s the least random part of the whole damn game.

I think you factor in as much information as possible when tiering characters.

I think Ammy is still A-tier.

Her damage didn’t change much (i.e low-mid; pretty much the same issue she had in Vanilla). She still has some of the best normals in the game. Her assist, DHC and THC are still great. She’s still pretty much immune to zoning and fights rushdown well. She still resets and throws like a champion. Air-weapon changes offer some interesting combo options and recovers very quick. Aerial XF and her new XF boosts makes her a force to be reckoned with as an anchor, especially combined with Vale of Mist.

The loss of air-dash guarding didn’t hurt her much. I can still get in just fine with a raw air-dash. Many characters don’t have the tools to punish her air-dash properly. Lower meter-gain also makes using a hyper to punish less appealing. Seeing as how she’s usually an anchor now, aerial XF works to her advantage. For anyone that likes to use meter (usually stupidly), air-dashing less or using it to bait hypers (since she can cancel it with her fast normals in time to block or XF) works fine.

There hasn’t been any talk about her because of the new characters (and old characters getting changed noticeably for the better) overshadowing her but UMvC3 is really just the same bullshit with a fresh look and she’s always handled bullshit well. In the end, she’s more or less the same solid, independent character everyone loves to hate.

My opinions of course.

His J.S has great priority, so I hit people with it all the time when they are rushing me down. His speed in XF3 allows him to get in that area. I’m going by experience, and I hit that instant overhead a lot. His J.S is just amazing in general. Even without XF3, J.S improves his speed greatly.
