UIUC Thread Part IV: BBBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRR

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I don’t want to do Melee.

well i mean, we are technically affiliated with aaron and the twin’s whole group. i honestly don’t mind if they have another smash tourney, though it does feel like they have had smash tourneys quite frequently. i mean the AASHO event, as well as the one they had at the union recently for HKN.

anyhow, with mike sayin how corporate ebgames has turned. i think they would want us to do something that would help their market. like brady and sean were pretty laidback, though even they still wanted our tournaments to contribute somehow to the store.

if we put guilty gear and hokuten no ken together, well, eb sells neither game, as well as there is no market in the US. actually, we wouldn’t be contributing much to them, considering both games are kinda niche games.

3rd strike and melee would be the crowd pleasers, but i do agree with andy on the fact that N64 smash would bring in a crowd regardless. Anyhow, point being, those 2 games should be separated for the tournaments. Though at the same time, having 3rd strike at eb games might be detrimental to the potential number of people it would bring in, since they have to pay.

my personal opinion is that we put guilty gear in the eb tournament. the very least, none of us are that touchy about putting in $3-5 for it. for either of the smash tournaments, it is better if we put it into illinites just because of advertising purposes, also it caters to a better crowd of casual gamers. I suppose we should then put 3s in the eb tournament instead.

that is given we decided to do hokuten no ken, guilty gear, 3s, and smash.

as much as hokuten no ken sounds like a good idea for our personal interests, you know that nobody except for us are going to play.

i can see it now…rei vs roah in finals

Okay.

EB Games tournament. Talked to James for a really short time. Even though he is the manager of the store, he has to bring it up with the District manager, Jeff. He told me to call back on Tuesday to see if it gets OK’ed. It’s not looking good. = (

Melee and 3s at Illinites

Tekken 5: As much as I wanted to run this game at Illinites, we really can’t so long as EB Games won’t let us do a tournament. I was hoping we could use Smash Melee to be our main pull for Illinites and use Tekken 5 as a testing ground, to see if we really could use it as a game in Illinites. Success or fail, it wouldn’t matter, as Smash Melee would be the foundation. So without EB, assuming EB won’t give us the green light, T5 is out.

Hokuto no Ken: Really no point in running this now at Illinites or EB. When you consider the business standpoint of things from EB Games’ point of view, running a tournament for a niche game you don’t sell is ridiculous. This would only get me laughed at by the guy behind the counter.

Smash 64: Despite the possibility of attracting a large crowd like Melee would, I really don’t think this would be logistically possible. We don’t have 64’s, and making this a BYOC event would, imo, kill it. I don’t know anyone on campus that still has a 64 controller.

Guilty Gear: James gave me the idea of doing this as a 3rd game at Illinites. The only problem with this would be the prize money. We would have to make sure Illinites would give us the regular $500 total they give for our event to be able to split the money reasonably between the 3 tournaments. Well, I talked to the chair we’re working with now, Natalie, and for this Illinites, according to her, the committee is trying its best to “go all out” and book some big name performers for this last Illinites of the year. As a result, the prize money they will give us will be a max of “$100 for first prize, $75 for second, $50 for third.” I’m not sure she even knew that we would be doing two games. Doing so would double the prize money needed. So assuming she was considering only one game, that would be a max budget of $225 in prize money for this event. Divide that across three games, and you can see the problem in that.

Also when considering the last Illinites tournament we did was Smash and GG, and that no one comes to the GG tournaments, making it just like regular weekly casuals, it makes no sense at all.

Third Strike: For the reasons I’ve stated earlier, 3s gets the nod. It’s the only game we’ve had that gave a turnout of over 30, aside from Smash Melee.

Smash Melee: No arguments here. Even if there was a tournament last night, the Illinites tournament will be 3 weeks from tomorrow. Also, that HKN tournament wasn’t free, and there weren’t cash prizes. Ours will be free, and there will be cash prizes. The other consideration, and most important is that we need to keep in favor with Illinites. This means drawing the largest number of people possible, and leaving a good impression with our new chair member, Natalie, who apparently did not even know we run two games each tournament. If we lose favor with Illinites, we can kiss tournaments goodbye, and after a long time of no more Smash Illinites tournaments, the self sufficient Smash community that some are saying don’t need us, will certainly not need us anymore when they start running their own Smash Illinites tournaments.

2v2 teams is the best way here. Even if a 1v1 will attract more people, playing 2 stock because of time constraints is not cool. They’ve experienced that, and will likely not try that again.

The Verdict: Smash Melee 2v2 teams and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike at Illinites 04/27/07

Fine with me. Im still hoping for eb too.

we could always do a guilty gear tournament exhibition.

who says we have to have cash prizes? just a suggestion. i mean, we aren’t money grubbin assholes right?

That’s not a bad idea. I already sent Natalie the finalized lineup, so GG won’t get any advertising. It’ll be like the BYOC thing that EVO does. Except we have to bring our own tvs, too. I’m sure someone would be willing to do the exhibition tournament, as I’ll be busy with Smash, and will probably delegate even 3s to someone, too.

But yeah, if you guys set that up, I’m down.

i could run 3s i guess with like scott or jerry

sure thing.

Hey, fuck you! I’m a money-grubbing asshole.

What a bitch.

Welp wish us luck this weekend.

Scott sucks. (But really rules cause hes letting us stay at his place!)

Scott and Stephane: wanna make a team for gg? or you already with others?

Anyone staying behind gaming today? Jerry? Mike? …Andrew?

Hey James and Stepane, be ready to leave around 3:30, ok?

Make SURE that you bring pillows and covers, as we have absolutely nothing for you.

Ok…thanks for the tip.

andrew … now that we all learned 3rd strike. you still don’t play with us.

admit it. its not the game. its cuz you hate .

good luck at the tourney!!

i was just listening to some songs from HnK… wow, the music’s so fun.
