Hey wassup fellow hawaii gamers, My friends and I are doing a research project for our class on the language of gamers, gamers who play fighting games in particular, but the research isn’t limited to this sub culture by any means. Our focus is going to be how the language of gamers is such a large function of becoming apart of a gaming community and how understanding that language can ultimately affect rather you’re considered apart of that community or not. Where I need the help from everyone is I would like to know how everyone became apart of the gaming communities they are apart of now, rather it be for MvC2, Tekken Counter-Strike, or whatever the case. For example if someone taught you what all of the different terms meant and various things of that nature. Any other advice on potential points of interest that you think I should key in on would also be helpful. I’m open to ideas.
I’m doing this because I feel that gaming has become a major part of our culture yet many people don’t realize just how rich and involved the culture truly is. I want to try and show just how evolved the gaming culture has become. If your not sure on something please post and I’ll try my best to clear it up.

Vs. Club Meeting #1
Friday, Feb 20; 2:00pm-10:00pm. Room CC 309 (campus center 3rd floor, near the lounge)
First meeting of the Vs. Club @ The University of Hawaii! We will have 2 TVs (one is wall mounted), and at least my DC. Prospective members, see if we can pool our resources and get a ps2, and good (preferably MAS) sticks.
Membership will be $15 per year. You will be allowed into all of our free play days at no charge (Tentativly $2.50 each day for non members), as well as the option to attend any other game days we may hold except for tournaments. Tournaments will be open to all who wish to test their might.
What we need:
People to come! (I need someone to come in with me at 2pm. I have class at 2:30 and there needs to be someone in the room at all times)
A PS2, and Sticks. (we need ggxx, ttt, sc2, cvs2, and ST or that new SF game)
People to come! Please tell your friends and plan ahead to be able to show up for at least some time next week. I especially need the core members to come in so we can discuss policies and future plans.

I will actually be able to attend the meeting on Friday. However, I need someone to guide me to the room. I suck at directions and I only seen like, 2 buildings of that campus.

The room is next to the lounge. The room is 28’x18’ (504 sq ft). The setup can hold 37 people at a time.There will be 2 TVs with games running, and at least one computer to check email and watch match/combo videos.
HOWEVER, while we may have the room until 10pm, most likely people will be leaving to go to the Marvel vs Capcom 2 tournament at HB, which happens to be that night. The meeting will probably end around ~6pm as people who want to enter the Marvel tournament (me ) will be leaving around then. I will stay as late as possible if it is worth it, (ie enough people). If enough people are there at 3pm, and can stay late, and not go to the tournamnet, then I will stay late. The detail will be worked out later, and future meeting will be planned around tournaments so they will not conflict (like if there is a ddr tournament). One idea is to change meeting days (I will only be available on Wed night, but other days are possible if some officer can take responsibility for the room), another is to have more awesomer (<-- Iolani Education!) and better tournments (not likely) than HB.
In any event, this first meeting is going to be pretty much a free play day, and a marvel practice/warm up session. If shitty people actually show up, be nice so they will stay and pay some club dues!

No offense casual play is nice but a lot of times people dont get better or learn anything. They just repeat the same mistakes. I don’t mind going if we get some time to go to training mode.
Opponents getting better and learning tech only raises the bar for everyone to get better. To much people horde tech or just to stubborn to admit they dont know how to deal with matches. I admit even I still have matches I am learning. So if i make someone better and I get harder matches from them It only makes me better…
To bad more people dont share this view…and horde all the tech… Honestly, I dont give a fuck anymore whos the best or any of that shit . Its not even a Brians vs Blunt or whos the best anymore to me . I just want to get better for evolution. I rather spend time helping anyone that want to raise there game so I can get my game to another level .

YK808: This friday Host somekinda tourney. For me, perferrably 3S. Maybe host a 5 vs 5? i think if enough people can, a 3 vs 3 or just singles. I dont think it should take so much of the time though. Cause i’m sure some want to practice for mvc2 that night.
Also…an idea for the club considering you have real meetings and a room now. Maybe you some create somekind of system for the players. Such as apointed leaders to the main games (MVC2, CVS2, SC2…etc). Then when you have noobs to a certian game. This leader has to give advice (game mechanics, tricks, priority…) and assignments to their appointed game. Then like monthly have a tourney for each individual game to appoint a new leader/defend title. That way the really good people at specific games can help everyone get better.
Just an idea to kick around. Dont know if anyone would be interested.

Sound like a good idea. Especially like, the “leader” type thing. Everybody can teach the scrubs how to play a game, but it’s good to have a solid player giving out advice. That way, the noobs won’t get too confused when trying to learn. Dunno about “title defense,” but it sounds kinda fun.
