There’s never anything wrong with more people getting money. I fully support this pay system.
So far, this is sounding amazing. The pay structure is one that needs to be followed in some shape or form by all majors from here on out, IMO. The scaling pot bonus is a great idea too. Keeps the top at the top, while letting the little guys get a piece of the pie too. This will make the good but not great players that much hungrier to come out and try to get a piece. It’s always nice to go to a major, and be able to come back saying that you got paid!!
And SSF4 Character Auction is too sick.

Fighting games need to start doing this,
it not only rewards constant placers who hit top 10 or even top 16 or top 32 and encourages them to keep playing and coming back, but it also catches the FG community up with other competitive leagues.
In GSL starcraft 2, they pay all the way to top 64,
in Magic The Gathering pays top 16 iirc
my only problem is if a smaller game tourney say like GG only gets 30 entries, the 3rd place guy gets nothing kinda sucks for him.

I like to do my event near the start of the pre-Evo season, and I dont want to overlap A-cen, so I plan around them. Last year, we were before them. This year, we are after. Do what you have to do, but you won’t want to miss UFGT7. A-cen has been same-old-same-old for years now imo.
This is finally a change that needed to happen at big tournaments. Top3 payment only is Dinosaur era. This is hella great news and I am super excited. This will encourage a LOT of players that know that they maybe have no hope of winning the whole thing but can do well enough and still come out with some money.

I really like the idea of a progressive pay structure. Often times you see the same top 8 cats go home with all the prizes and money. With this pay structure it rewards even more of the top percentage of competitors. It also encourages people to register not making feel like they are a “pot monster” for lack of better word.

I’m glad someone has finally taken the approach of paying a larger # of players based on the # of entries. Paying more players will encourage more people to come out which in turn will strengthen the level of competition. You should be rewarded for making it out of pools and/or beating a % of the field, rather than the huge top heavy payout of only top 3. More than ever, players are recognized for making top 8 at major events, or even top 16, so they should be rewarded for their hard work!
I can’t wait to come next year, I’ll be sure to beat my MWC 2010 placing of 98/228, assuming the entries are around the same as last time lol =]
Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask for a while, but what exactly is a “character auction”?
Glad you asked. In the character auction event, only one of each character is allowed. The event will be limited to 32 players/characters in SSF4, so a couple characters will be left out randomly.
To enter this event, you must win a live auction for your character. Part of the fun is bidding up other people’s characters, as well. The price paid for each character can and will vary dramatically, based on demand. The tournament itself will be single game, single elim, so anything can realistically happen. It pays top 2, 80%/20%.
This will go down either friday or saturday night at UFGT7.
Just saw the payout plan, and I have to say it looks solid. Definitely well thought out. The top placers are still making a significant amount thanks to the progressive pot bonus, yet the structure allows people who know they wont make top3 still have something to play for. Even if it’s not a huge amount for the last payouts, playing for something is better then playing for nothing, and for the people who are getting top8s consistently, it’s a big difference.
I think overall, this is a great way to give incentive for more people to show up. There are so many players who don’t feel they have a chance to make top3, yet can definitely fight their way into a top32 or top16 and be able to play to be “in the money.” This makes for more intense matches, and better play. And sure, the top3 placers lose a little but of their winnings on paper due to the structure, but if this payout structure gives incentive for more people to show up, then that money is made back due to more being in the pot from more entrants. In the end, top3 is still making a lot of money from this structure, regardless.

Noah - Yes, the new payout structure will cover all SINGLES games. It will not be used for teams tournaments. Teams tournaments will be SBO style, single game single elim, and the paystructure for those has yet to be determined.
