UD-CPS2: Fully Consolized Capcom Play System 2

Sorry for the double post. But are there any plans to ship outside of the US? I’ve got a couple of guys from Nicaragua, Mexico, and Europe all asking me.

don’t forget to include Chile =)

Yeah, I can ship outside the US, but I’ve been jacked by Int’l buyers before, so I’ll need to think about payment options. In other words, I’m not going to allow opportunity for people to get their system and then do a PayPal chargeback claiming they never got their item (which they can easily do) and rip me off.

Looks like it was highlighted on stream @ 12:50

We’ll highlight it again on stream this Wednesday, and in fact every Wednesday we stream ST from Super Arcade. Gotta hype up the product the few weeks leading up to Evo man.

Awesome, man! It means a lot! Sometimes I wonder if the hype train will be too much for me to keep up with! Oh, by the way, feel free to slap some self adhesive rubber feet on the bottom of that unit to keep it from slipping. You can pick those things up at most hardware stores and even many grocery stores where they keep tools and nik-naks.

In other news:

  • New video board seems to be be working solid, which is exciting being as it’s a very different design than previous (still same connector)
  • New replacement fan seems to work great and not nearly as loud as the stock jet-engine fans
  • Internal AV cabling looking how I had envisioned it: clean & sexy
  • Found a different internal connector style that will be more readily available and save a few bucks
  • A little closer to finished with the case milling jig
  • Found someone to help with soldering. This is huge. There are 3 fairly involved circuit boards that go into converting a CPS2 A board. For me, that’s about an hour of soldering per 3 piece board set, before I’ve even touched the CPS2. With someone else to deal with that aspect of assembly, that frees me up to focus on the actual conversion process. Plus he’s about 3x faster than me, so rather than taking a week of evenings for 10 board sets, it might be one Saturday for him.

Happy to help. Gotta support hard-working guys like you willing to do so much for such niche communities. Being TOO busy is a fantastic problem to have, and I’m sure you’re handle the work load just fine.

Will do. Some sort of friction surface on its base should help with the slipping problem. I’m just afraid that one of these days someone will pull too hard on the chord or bump the table or something, and it’ll just slip right off the plastic tables.

Great update!

nice video showing the test unit ud!
What are you doing for evo at this point?
I still want you to take my ST/VS monies

First off, this looks like some really fantastic work. Great job with these, undamned.

I have a question re: cps2 hardware where the A board is not physically separate from the B board. Its not actually one continuous device internally so in that regard the 2 “boards” can be separated. Do you think its possible to transform something like that into one of these consolized setups? I ask because there are retailers that sell multigame cps2 sets where the whole thing is packaged the way I explained it. The “A board” portion contains the same interface as a normal A board would (JAMMA connector, RCA plugs, kirk harness connector).

Well, as mentioned earlier, I’ll be bringing a couple units to accompany the head-to-head cabs at the ST Games tourney. I’ve basically run out of time to have discrete converters available for sale @ EVO, but I’ll be plenty excited just running UD-CPS2 in the ST Games.

Thanks, Bernie!

I believe I know what you are asking, and I believe the answer is yes. It wouldn’t be as simple of a process to convert, but yeah, you should be able to consolize quite a few arcade game boards in this fashion. At present, pretty much the only limitation would be the lack of -5V, which some boards would need for their audio amplifiers and maybe some tweaks for button config. At some point in the future I may consider a revised power board that includes the -5V, but for now, being as CPS2 doesn’t need it, it wasn’t on my hot list.

A fellow @ AIAB “This is It!” tournament was excited at the prospect of a Tekken Tag pcb consolized in this fashion. The way he explained it, Tekken Tag is sort of the ST of Tekken and the PS2 version has some big differences from the arcade version. That hardware would actually be way cool to consolize being as it already has VGA output!

Awesome. I’ll probably chat with you further at Evo about this. Thanks for the response.

@eltrouble For what I see in the Wednesday’s videos you have tested high quality sticks with it. Did you try a brawlstick by any chance?

@undamned I am sure someone asked you this before but have you considered to create a kickstarter project?

I did not try a Brawl Stick yet. I’ve asked members of the community to bring their sticks, but so far only a few have done so. But I keep a running list of sticks that we’ve tested and how well they work or don’t work, and I’ll update you guys whenever I can.

I am so hyped about this. Where do I send my deposit?

As long as a TE has been tested, a SE/Brawlstick should also work.

In theory, yes it should. But I’d rather confirm that it most definitely works instead of just assuming. Also, the SFxT stick does not work on the undamned supergun, despite the fact that regular TEs do. I’m assuming there were some firmware changes between certain Mad Catz products, and the SE/Brawlstick might fall within that category.

Could you PM me your test list so far? I may have a few nights to bang out some changes before the next Super Arcade meetup. Also, when testing, it would be nice to know which sticks do not follow the standard button order right out of the box. I realize button config mode can remedy this, but it would be nice to leave button config mode for customization and the default mode would just work how one would expect. For example, the MC Cthulhu (and Sega VSHG, so far as I know) had some buttons swapped when running my generic PS3 driver, so I had to tweak it a bit.

Btw, I found this thread through the link in eltrouble’s video. I usually only check the super turbo category in srk forum. I would also post about this project there if you want more potential buyers once the project is done.
