Posting a link to a vid with ibuki… You don’t see me posting detailed necro tutorials, anthony.
I’m going to Vancouver, and I’m not done until tommorow, but good luck to all you at that SBO quals.
That’s a fucking sickass Ibuki. Allen, pick up 3S (play it all the time) and get really good Ibuki or else I’ll be forced to learn her and be sick with her too!
Yeah, because there aren’t any.
Cheers.
if that ibuki is green colored then that’s aruka and i have tons of footages by him. i’d post it on the tc website but it appears someone is in depression right now. oh, i tried accessing my tc email and it won’t work.
check your pm anthony.
LOL man if it only was SSB instead of SSBM. i wanted to play SSBM more, but i never had game cube, so i didn’t get to play much… as for SSB, haha…i’ll just try to SHOW you if we ever play, =X.
just out of curiosity, who is all going to NCR?? Ill probably show up on saturday or friday to watch some ass kickings.
UCI o_O!?
Sup SRK People. I know this may seem kind of off topic, but I felt that this would be a place to get some unbiased and first-hand info on what I’m looking for.
I just got accepted to UCI for Fall-2004-2005 as a freshmen and I’m considering going there. I was there for about four weeks during the summer and I got to see the place, hang out at Zot, etc. I thought it was pretty dope, but I’ve been hearing some negative things about it. These things made me change my mind about the place (UCI) but I want to confirm if it’s as bad as they say.
A lot of people regard UCI as “hella asians” and “commuter school”. I don’t see much of a negative in this, aside from diversity on the campus. But I think in the freshmen year when most of us are in dorms we get to mingle and all that. Then they were saying that people aren’t really that social and they stick to their cliques. Sometimes it’s even the same as the cliques that they had in high school from nearby orange county schools. Others say that the education is really weak and graduating from UCI won’t get you anywhere.
That said, I regarded some of the positives that I experienced first hand. The campus was not too large, it seemed quiet and laid back, food was all right, nearby places seemed decent, Irvine Spectrum, and some hot chicks too (not as many as UCSB I hear–also got accepted there).
So what do you guys say? Go or no go O_O!? Thanks
UCI o_O!?
If you’re gonna want to party like mad, go to UCSB. UCI has next to nothing in terms of a nightlife (most stores close by 9, except theatres and some restaurants, and there, and you’ll have to drive around to find decent clubs). As for gaming, well, I’m not sure what the situation will be by the time you start your quarter, 'cause zz’s getting torn down to build a new one, but it’s not all that sure that the machines will be put back in.
Education wise, I don’t know, I keep hearing about incompetent teachers, teachers who can be hard to understand because of incredibly thick accents and little grip on english, or my favorite, elitist prick teachers who think that they’re God’s gift to the world and show it by: posting hw two days before it’s due (hw that could potentially take several days to finish), not telling their teaching assistants what material to have their class cover before a test (this is especially true in ICS classes), and teaching/lecturing on certain topics to make them seem important but completely ignoring them on tests. So, if despite all that you’re still willing to come, then by all means.
The bottom line is, if you’re going to want to party most of the time and play games the other half, this isn’t the school for you (maybe no school is for that matter if you plan on playing the whole time).
Re: UCI o_O!?
Thanks for the thorough reply, DR. Well first of all, I’m not the big party type, haha. I rarely party. However, I’ve heard that regardless of the party factor, UCSB has better academics (50% of my concern). And I probably won’t have a car till my third or fourth year.
The stuff you told me education wise kind of scares me. At first I was like “damn that’s whack” and would feel really scared to be in such classes. But after a while I would guess that most schools would have a few professors like that. If they don’t, they’re probably too good for me to get into >_<.
The other 50% factor I’m considering is not being lonely/bored whenever there are no classes. That is the image I’m getting from all of the hype and that scares me. Where on the other end, UCSB is overly social and extra-exciting.
I’m torn… maybe I should just go to a junior college and transfer =(. LoL we’ll see. Thanks again. Anybody else have some thoughts?
I dont know about anyone else, but i like irvine. I met and keep in touch with 90% of the people in my hall and i hang out with all of them from time to time. Most people are pretty friendly from my experience and the ones that arent friendly dont hang around too much anyway.
For the education, ive only been here 2 quarters, but all of my professors have been good in teaching the material. Again i dont know shit about ICS or anything like that, but ive taken math physics and a few government courses as well as writing and a film studies couse and all of those seemed like courses that person x could get an A in.
if you want maaad comp in gaming, then you should go to UCLA or UCB, they have bi-weeklies i think at both of those colleges.
EDIT* Double Post, go down
Thanks for the response, Dentron. That probably shed some light on the situation. However I also have to take into consideration DR’s outlook. Oh well, I’ll be checking out the Open House and seeing everything for myself.
As far as gaming, that isn’t an issue for me. I’m not a big SF player (just a 3s scrub who switched over from Tekken), so I would probably be better off at a lighter scene.
Thanks again guys. -_-;;
t4 sux but we got a machine, there are a few good players over on that end of the zz. as for 3s, its the only machine with good controls, so thats a plus. but “DR” as well as the other 10 or so rediculous 3s players might be a problem.
hey vpt, I think location is the biggest thing to consider in choosing a university.
Arrogant professors? More or less hot chicks? Cliquy people who don’t socialize outside of their circle? ANY school will have these factors. I picked UCI cuz the location was dope…we’re near 2 really nice beaches, it’s pretty safe, and if you wanna go to SD/Tijuana or LA, you’re right in the middle. Plus, the music scene in orange county is to my liking…even though some of these indie bands sound mainstream…ahhh tangent
So yeah, UCSB has dope Halloween parties, from what I heard. Their dorms are also right on the beach, so if you can handle the distraction of PARADISE, then go for it hehe…I’m not sure about academics or anything, but if it’s a UC, it’s probably good. People are gonna tell you that places like Riverside suck in terms of academics, but these people usually have no first-hand experience, or any idea what they’re talking about. Seriously, you can get a quality education at most campuses if you try.
Our writing department (grad students) is actually number ONE in the country. Our comp sci program is pretty distinguished, too, but I changed out of that major pretty fast due to some personal reasons…good luck if you choose that major; it’s pretty tough =\
If you go to UCI, don’t get into the dorm called Vista. I lived there…sucks bad…don’t get Quenya, either.
As for the concept of commuter school…I must say, lots of people come just for class. There’s not much reason to stick around after 9, like Double Reppuken said…every once in a while, we’ll have concerts (Unwritten Law came here like 2 years ago), late night Mardi Gras stuff, etc…but they don’t happen very often.
Consider this, though…once you go to ANY university, you will be addicted to the amazing download speeds…it’s hard to leave your room sometimes…I remember getting addicted to counterstrike
Parking sucks more than usual over here. I hate getting towed…and it’s all over the city of Irvine…in fact, I just got towed today; had to pay 220 dollars for that @#$#
PARKING SUCKS
The majority of people attending UCI (not the city…irvine is still predominantly white) are asian. There’s diversity, but it’s kinda backwards? I’m not sure how big of a factor that is for you…it wasn’t really a factor for me, though it is for some…heh heh
The weather here is pretty consistent. Much more comfortable than anything over on the east coast…
UCI is kind of in the middle of renovation right now; we’ll have things to eat and do, but right now stuff is in limbo. I’ll try to update you guys on the status of the zot zone…but for now, please…do not speak of its demise just yet
I’m going to NCR…hopefully I get to lose to John Choi again…haha…
Re: Re: UCI o_O!?
For UCI, it depends on the major. Except for one teacher, every humanities instructor I’ve had was really cool and fair without being a pushover who didn’t actually teach anything. Engineering, on the other hand, the teachers are hit and miss. You’ll come accross a great professor, then next quarter you’ll have one that just makes you wonder how they became one (insults your intelligence during office hours, easy midterms and homework but a ridiculous final, all that stuff that rasputin said, etc). It’s a similar state for physic and ICS, though I have little first-hand knowledge in those areas.
Also, yes, it’s just like high school. Cliques, assholes, that sort of thing, but like wepeel said you can’t completely avoid that no matter where you go to school.
On the bright side, UCI is a nice area. The town seems built around the school. The campus itself has a good atmosphere, too. There are some other things but everyone else mentioned them.
I wouldn’t recommend living in the dorms unless you don’t have a demanding major.
Taking care of stuff at a JC first might be a good idea, but I know that I had the largest volume of good teachers during my first year at UCI. Most of the math and basic physics teachers were helpful when need be and didn’t pull tricks for what to study.
And, anthony, why would I refrain from posting necro tutorials if there aren’t any? that doesn’t make any sense.
wepeel: Thanks for the input dude. As I said, I’m trying to take in as many sources as I can so that I don’t get a biased opinion. And yeah I agree that every school has a little bit of problems, but if people consistently point them out then it seems like a serious problem.
For UCSB I’ve heard only good things, but the party thing really scares me. Hmmm… music scene is not really an issue for me actually. I’m into trance and Korean stuff so there isn’t any chance of that stuff turning up there, LoL. As for diversity it doesn’t matter to me either. However, when I found out that UCSB was 60% white and I live in an area where it’s like 2% white I kind of took note (not to be racist or anything).
As far as location, I mentioned that I lived at UCI during last summer for four weeks. I got to know the math building pretty well, and some of the writing one also. I liked the Zot Zone area and the recreation centers, but it didn’t seem like the best that the UC’s had to offer.
Across the street was down also. I walked all around the campus (all around the outside) and I found many necessities within walking range. And for dorms I was in Gondolin at middle earth and I didn’t enjoy it. I’m considering Mesa area if I do decide to enroll. And yes, I was also very addicted to the download speeds, LoL. Filled up my 160 GB in one week >.<.
Parking? I won’t have a car till I’m a junior and by then I’ll probably understand how the system works. And as you mentioned, most people would be coming just for school etc. And I actually don’t mind the thing about everything being over after 9pm. That way I can have some peace unlike at UCSB, haha.
ClosetRemy: Hmm so the teacher thing is pretty iffy, eh? I got into the School of Social Sciences as an Economics major. I’m considering the 3-2 Program to get an MBA or something. Hopefully the teachers I have will be all right.
But then you also re-enforced the high school clique-type thing, haha. But I’m curious how those cliques are formed? Do they just come into the college that way or are they made in the first years?? I think I’d have to live in the dorms because I got some FAFSA money for living in them, so it’s my best bet financially.
Right now I’m iffy on the junior college deal. I just talked to a friend who transferred to UCLA and he tells me that he is way below level with the other students and the classes he took for his major weren’t helpful at all. He might have to take them all over again. So I’m concerned that even if transferring lets me into a better UC, I might be behind. Where otherwise I would be comfortable at UCI.
Thanks again for the feedback everybody.
PS: One more thing. Whenever a transfer student comes in, does he/she feel like a loner or outsider? Or are they offered access to dorms, etc. to get to know everybody? I’m afraid if I miss out on the first two years I’d be missing one of the most important things of a University: making contacts. :lame:
vpt…
I just transferred from a junior college this last fall so I thought I’d give my opinion about that. As far as academics I feel jc prepared me just as good or better for the upper division work than the equivalent classes here at UCI would. I was able to complete all my lower division/breadth work so now I am able fill out my schedule with major classes more to my liking. Added to this at jc’s you pay a fraction of the price, intro classes are a fraction of the size and you definitely get to know the professors on a more personal level.
As far as your friend transfer student, perhaps he didn’t take advantage of the facilities offered to him. Transferring from a jc to a uc is a pretty standard process and the couseling staff at any jc should be knowledgeable about it (it’s all on the web in detail also) One thing to watch out for is aimlessly taking classes which won’t help your transfer. I killed a good bit of time doing this (not necessarily a bad thing…) Definitely take advantage of counseling services with a clear goal in mind.
As far as the loner/outsider… I’m not a very social person, so take this for what it’s worth. You are offered on-campus housing for your first year so you will have the opportunity to live in close quarters with other students and make what you will of it. But I would asume it is still a major difference than the freshman dorm experience. I have met some very nice people but if you feel making connections is a large part of what you want from college then I would recommend entering as a freshman.
Thanks a lot for the input, Starchild. Much appreciated especially from some one else who has done the jc -> uc thing. And yeah, the guy who I talked to wasn’t the smartest of people so that could be the reason.
Anyways, I have weighed the advantages of a community college and you pretty much mentioned all of them. However the main reason that’s holding me back is monthly apartment rent (which would otherwise be covered by Federal Aid at a University) and food, transportation, etc. So financially the University ends up being a better choice–this is because I wouldn’t be attending the community college from home.
As far as friendliness, that pretty much confirmed my suspicion. However, I’ve been told that some places such as UCDavis and UCSan Diego have special portions of dorms for transfer students so that they can interact amongs themselves. But again, freshmen experience can’t be replaced?
Also, which JC did you go to, what majors, where did u transfer (accepted to?), and why did you go to the one you did? Thanks
Eliot, once again, your inability to comprehend simple phrases IN ENGLISH amazes me. I thought the latest release of that software you use was an upgrade.
John, let’s talk about the next tourney soon.
Cheers.
