I’m currently weekend studying :lame: But I’ll stop by for a little bit when I have to go to campus.
Thanks for answering me Pieguy
So what game is playing on the cabinet right now?
Sounds like you guys have a nice group of players up there.
I’ll have to try & visit sometime, possibly at the next monthly or bi-weekly event.
BTW, anyone playing HD Remix on the 360?
I’ve been putting time into Zangief, relearning to be patient & strike at the right moment.
If anyone is up for some rounds, add me to your friends list or send me a message over XBL.
Mostly SF4. The other cabinets do get played though. And the players at MUGA are really chill, definitely drop by sometime.
I play a little HD Remix, but I mostly play random characters. Once I dl the game for myself, yeah let’s definitely play some rounds.
run a 3rd strike tourney plz.
that would require someone to care…
Anyways, the comp at davis is decent, it definitely used to be of higher quality (ie when most of you were in sixth grade). SF4 has definitely brought out more competition and raised everyone’s skill level.
Long post: read only if you’ve been drinking…
I forget who asked but I’ll answer it anyways. To date SF4 has brought in about
9 grand, seeing as how it cost 23,000, I would consider the total amount so far to be a very promising return, and evidence that arcades are not dead (contrary to the majority of morons on this board). Rather arcades need to invest in games that the public actually wants, have a high traffic location and spend money on maintenance.
Has the games area received a large enough return on SF4 to invest in blazblu or in other fighting games? Honestly the answer is no, and here’s why: Our yearly budget for arcade machines has been cut down to 30,000 a year (when I was a student here it was 70,000). You can blame the MU for this, money that would have normally gone to this budget has been spent on upgrading the facilities (things like King lounge/Griffin) and adding new departments.
Is this a good long term financial move for the school…yes. Does it suck for the students…maybe. Does it suck for you…yes. Also the Games Area has upgraded the rest of our facilities as well, we have put in a new bowling scoring system, upgraded to beautiful monitors and invested a lot of money on behind the scenes stuff (pinsetters, pins, kickbacks and a whole bunch of other things that Marty won’t comprehend).
Back to SF4. Basic economics rule here. You as the consumer have a finite amount of money to spend down in the arcade. You decide to spend all your money playing this new game, while ignoring the old games.
SF4 income increases. CVS2, MVC2 , and 3S income drastically decrease.
Now this new game might bring in new players, or it might increase the amount of money you are willing to budget for the arcade. Fortunately for us, the last two possibilities seemed to have occurred, as our gross income has increased since SF4’s inception. Would adding Blazblu do the same thing? I don’t know. Street Fighter has a much larger fan base, Guilty Gear not so much (except maybe spirit juice, tanaka and some cosplayers from Reno). I wouldn’t anticipate it drawing more people to the arcade, rather it would further limit the amount of money spent on MVC2, CVS2, etc. Finally, the game looks beautiful, and from what I’ve heard plays well, but we don’t have a really nice cabinet to place it in (which I think it would need, because the graphics look fantastic).
I would say more but I gotta head to the hospital.
Hey Dan, thanks for keeping us up to date with the situation of the MUGA’s profits and new games. I don’t mean to sound like a pessimist, but won’t SF4 profits decrease once everyone gets the console version (because they’ll be sessioning with other people on console)?
I do expect revenue to drop. Hopefully, an update will be released for the arcade. Regardless I think that the arcade version should be the “official” version, though I understand that this most likely won’t happen.
I don’t think it’ll drop off too much. The most frequent time we all play is when we’re all on campus for class anyways. It’s not like we all go meet up on weekends to play SF4.
True that. And, if you have tournaments that are bi-weekly, we’ll definitely come. We seriously need a camera though to record our matches. I want to put stuff on youtube or just show my brother my Zangief.
Does anyone know if we can capture video direct from the X2 system? I have a few capture cards laying around, though I would be hesitant to try anything. It seems to me that we should be able too…
Also, I mostly expect revenue to drop off in the evening as you guys get together for ranbats (wtf?). So to compensate I’ll just raise the price per game to like 5 bucks on the weekends.
Gamechariot and Arcade Infinity do it, so it’s possible.
The Taito X2 board comes with VGA cables and a VGA<->DVI converter… so I guess if you have a capture card that can capture either then it would be doable.
Hey, Danny, I’ve been doing my part. Every gap break I had from class was usually spent playing 4 and when I had to go to campus on weekends, I stop by to play for a bit. I should be getting burned out, but for some reason I am not.
It’s a shame that MvC2, CvS2, and Third Strike are not bringing in the players. They’re about 7-10 year old games. I think they have aged very well, but most people that are not fighting gamers like us on srk probably wouldn’t care.
No comment on Blaz Blue. It is a very beautful game though and it gets quite a scene at SVGL. I think it’s similar to SF4 here for us. Less people are playing Tekken 5, 3s, MvC2, and CvS2 there and instead turn their attention to Tekken 6 and Blaz Blu: the new games.
Hey y’all. Here are the official details of our inaugural tourney (for SF4):
Friday, at 4:30 PM. Sign-ups will start at about 3:45. Entry fee will be $5.
I was talking with Dan today and he said just to split the pot between the top 3 competitors. Entrants will still have to pay for their tokens, and the money paid for the tokens will go to the MUGA. So there will be no freeplay on the machines. Here is the prize breakdown:
(10 or more entrants)
1st - 70%
2nd - 20%
3rd - 10%
(less than 10)
1st - 80%
2nd - 20%
Can’t wait to see you guys there. Also if any of you guys have a video recorder that would be awesome. Keep in mind the tournament is just for Street Fighter 4. If you guys want tourneys for other games talk to Dan about it.
Whats the structure? 2/3 or 1/1? Single or double elim?
“Win cap” at 1, right? So that means we have to pay 6 tokens per match? If so that’s ridiculous. It’ll cost double compared to what we normally play.
Matches will be best 2/3 and the tournament format will be double elimination. Win cap will be set at 1 and each game for a player will cost 3 tokens, so yes it is 6 tokens per match. It was Dan’s idea, but I too think it’s the best way to do things. That way there’s no confusion on money. Entry fee goes to participants and the MU makes money from the tokens you guys put in. I might consider lowering the fee if $5 seems to discouraging for most of you guys.
yo will anyone be there tomorrow?
I may come over to MUGA for some games!
tourney related:
can someone please talk to to dan and ask him if we can do an HDR tourney?
I will bring:
xbox 360 plus 2 hori ex2 sticks + TV
thanks

Marty,
Change the master machine to 1 token per play, and the back one will be at 3 tokens, that way each competitor only has to pay 2 tokens per play. Honestly guys I don’t know how else to change the setup. If one machine is put on freeplay and the other on 3 tokens then it would be a pain in the ass to split the cost or rotate between machines.
damn. 3 tokens per match… u guys should really set it to 1 token cuz there’s gunna be alot of complaints , especially in the case where u guyz run out of tokens as well.
I would be down to play HDR. What time tomorrow? There’s always people there during the day, I will probably be there later in the afternoon.
Ok guys. Here are the newly revised tourney details:
Friday at 4:30. Entry is $5 but each play will only cost 1 token (no freeplay). Sing ups will start at 3:45 or whenever I decide to show up. Everyone cool with this? How many people should I expect for this thing. Like I said before, I’d rather have it not be big; but if not, whatever.
And about the HD Remix tournament, I think it would be a better idea to have that tourney held at the Griffin Lounge, just like the Smash tourneys. But I have no idea how to set something like that up. Or we could just have it at someone’s house.
