Made this suggestion on a couple forums and a lot of people seemed to like it. Added it to Unity’s suggestion box and it seems to be getting votes. Trying to spread the word. What do you guys think?
In the versus games, brawlers and grapplers are virtually useless. This includes characters like Thor, Hulk, Zangeif, and so on. It’s because although they can deliver a lot of damage, it’s almost impossible for them to get close enough to deliver it with such a fast game engine and most characters having at least decent keep-away tools AND the universal ability to push an attacker back by half to full screen just by blocking. So what about tying the power of advancing guard to the character’s weight class? That way, a massive fighter like Hulk or Thor could push a featherweight like X-23 or Trish all the way across the screen to get her off his back, but if X-23 or Trish tried to push Hulk or Thor back in their assault, they’d barely be moved. This one change could make a big difference in introducing a variety of fighting styles to effective versus play.
Hmmm… I don’t know about Hulk push blocking characters like X-23 ALL across the screen, but definitely a great idea. Hulk and others should be pushed way less but Trish/X-23 etc shouldn’t be pushed back that much. Just voted it up in Unity.
Very true, but I think fixing it selectively could be a huge boon to diversification of gameplay, whereas an across-the-board fix just keeps everyone relatively where they are now in relation to each other.
Doing it by weight class is a pretty imprecise way of doing this. For example, you actually end up buffing Dorm and nerfing Thor. Dorm gets to push you back the whole way across the screen which is not where you want to be against him (since he crumples to rushdown). Meanwhile, Thor also pushes you back across the screen which is where you want to be against him since he’s weak to keepaway.
dev has a good point imo just nerf the pushblock. even if though i love mvc2 as much as i do. i havent seen any other game with as much push block. minimum half the screen? smdh
I agree with the OP. Characters like Dormammu/Sentinel/Blackheart would have to be exceptions though, but who cares. Characters like Hulk/Jugg/Thor/Gief/Colossus/etc definitely need this.
EDIT: Capcom often goes though the trouble of giving characters different defense ratings, so I see no reason why they can’t do it for push blocking as well. Hell aren’t people reporting that Dormammu loses alot of life when hit? And he’s a big charcter…
Well first, that’s assuming that Dorm would be a heavyweight, which given his health, mobility, and melee power, I would doubt. But even if that were the case, we’re talking about two heavyweights, which would mean that Dorm’s “strength” and Thor’s “weight” would cancel each other out for a “moderate” push.
quite frankly the biggest criteria needed are the character’s movement speed (slow), play style (grappler or brawler, but NOT keep-away), and possibly his size. IMHO there’s no much else that you really need to consider.
Well when I said “weight class” I mostly meant the slow characters, which are almost always the big, heavy, brawler types. I don’t consider a character with health as low as Dorm’s a heavyweight, and Trish DEFINITELY isn’t.
I mentioned Trish in a matchup against Thor because with a weight class based system, this would mean that she would likely still get pushed to the end of the screen which is where she’ll want to be against Thor seeing as she can lock him down easily.
Howabout, characters that need to be affected less by pushback are affected less by pushback. This way, rush/close in characters like Thor, Felicia and X-23 get pushbacked less.
Push block should be less across the board. No reason to be specific, its not like you would really bother pushblocking a zoning character into their butter zone.
