Two Pieces....

Okay, here’s two stuff I’d like to include in my portfolio… I haven’t showed this to anybody yet so I have absolutely zero input on them… So please critique good and critique HARD!.. You can be absolutely banal but be reasonable about it so I can improve upon my next piece… Both pieces are made with Painter IX… I tried to make them anime style, but not entirely anime-looking (I don’t want any deformed musculature or bodies)… Maybe I’ll include some background pieces later like Mucha-inspired designs or something… The BGs kinda look bare at the moment…

First, it’s just a random guy, well-dressed, silly pose but what can you do (sigh)…

Second, it’s a sharpshooter gal, kinda inspired by Annie Oakley, the pose is rather stiff (double sigh)…

Both are very well-done. I almost never nitpick visual art. I did a lot of the figure drawing, anatomy study, and realism in general when I was younger, and I got so sick of it that I now spend all my time warping it. And even in analyzing other artwork, I only mention anatomy if it leaps out, or if if appears the person was shooting for things to be very “correct” and they just missed the mark.

Neither of these have that issue. Good line-quality (I’m very into lines), propotions feel pretty solid, the liberties taken with lighting are pleasing instead of jarring, and I actually like the stiffness of the second figure. It’s adds to the expression.

The only thing I can find to nitpick is the right side of the first figure’s face. You might be showing just a wink too much of it. Beyond that, bravo.

Wow. These are great, I envy your painting skills, something I’m trying to improve on myself.

The only thing I see odd is how the woman is holding the gun. I double barrel rifle that size can be fairly heavy maybe a little too heavy to hold it the way she’s holding it unless she has a really strong grip.

She also looks a lot like my music teacher in 4th grade.

Great work overall

Thanks a bunch BEAR… It’s not that I mind warped anatomy in my works, but I’m seriously (well trying to be) in study of human anatomy at the moment and I want to project that for these two pieces… I’m getting so banal about anatomy at the moment that in the third piece I’m working now, I’ve done two revisions but scrapped both as I felt them weak anatomy-wise… (ha, I suck :p) I shouldn’t be so anal though, as it’s probably just bad angles and not anatomy problems itself…

I hope the faces are a bit Asian anime-like as I’m not a big fan of westernized anime nor western comic-book styles (I hope you know what I’m talking about)–nothing against them, just not a fan of them as I said…

And I so know what you’re talking about with the guy’s face… It didn’t look bad when I was line-drawing it, but it looked terrible after I coloured it (In fact, my line-works just looks so much more different when I paint them)… I tried to fix the face, but it ends up looking worse and worse 'cuz I’ve already gone so far… So far, I’ve re-configured the folds in his shirt far more–especially in his left sleeve (the one holding the waist)…

As to the second piece’s “stiffness”–I knew it works for her demeanor and to add more to her expression but I just felt it’s a little too simple for somebody studying anatomy… Glad you liked the lines and the lighting though…

Ha ha… Thankx… I’m sorry about the gun though as I don’t know much about them (yet I like them in drawings–the real kind of guns and not made up :looney:)… I only had pictures from the web as references… If only I had a real gun (or a replica) to reference…

those look really good.
youve got some mad ms paint skillz

Anatomy study and proportions are very useful, and I’d never recommend someone avoid learning it. But I overdid figure drawing to the point where I hated it, and I haven’t worked with figures in a “correct” sense in years now. And I’d be surprised if I ever painted another still life again. Ha.

And yeah, it’s amazing how sometimes filling a line drawing can bring out certain bits that don’t look as good, or vice versa.

But a good source for poses with the musculature intact is here:

You may already know about this, but I use it as a reference quite a bit. Great site.

great stuff man. at first i thought the female had a really bland expression, but overall it just works. your painting style reminds me of the 3s artwork, while the overall finished look reminds me of old snk stuff combined with the cfe artwork. reminds me how much i really need to work on anatomy and stuff too.

Okay, thanks ever so SCUM GALE and BLAND_WOLF for them nice feedbacks… So I guess I’m still at my current stage as you guys don’t seem to have much to critique and seem to dig the colourings and linework… (reminds of the old SNK stuff, really?) That gun comment hit me like a wet noodle though–why didn’t I think of the shotgun’s weight?!.. I was more worried about its size maintaining and being in right proportion to the person…

But to add more: do the clothes feel right?.. Do they project the type of fabric I initially wanted?.. Are the hair and its lighting alright?..

Holy crap!.. No, I never knew about that site!.. Awesome, awesome, awesome!.. That’s quite a good resource there!.. The anatomies are a little too lean and too realistic though that it may lose the illustration feel of the subjects but it’s great for referencing poses/proportions/perspectives; besides, I could tweak musculature to my liking!.. I’ll put it to good use immediately (already using it for my next piece)… Many thanks!..

Yeah. It’s a great resource. I’ve come to enjoy working from guides like that more than actual photos. The internet can be pretty awesome, sometimes. And it’s pretty easy to stretch the frames as you see fit. So cheers. Glad it helped.

Great stuff Seba. You’ve always been one of my favorite artist in this forum. The rendering, color, and linework are all great. My only comments are the pose.

1st - He looks like he is talking to someone. I think you can make him more relaxed and add a little flavor to his gesture. He could be saying something like " Yeah, you didn’t know about the Prada show in Paris last week?"

2nd - She is the sharp and cold blooded type. I think having her hold the gun like she just shot something really adds more to the character.

Overall gret stuff and welcome back.

Seriously, that site is awesome, it’s automatically favourited… Many thanks!.. (And most of my inspirations came from what I learned and found from the internet!.. JC Leyendecker, William Bouguereau, Norman Rockwell, Alphonse Mucha, Range Murata, Takuji Kawano, Hyung-Tae Kim :wonder:)

swoon Words of praise from SFMC!!!.. Seriously, I need to improve more… Cheers for those paintovers!!!.. If I were to do them again, I’d definitely use those poses–ESPECIALLY the sharpshooter gal!.. (It’s not that she’s cold-blooded, she’s just strong-willed and experienced yet still with a lady’s heart… :wgrin:)

Oh, and does the guy project as somebody that’s a fashionista?.. Totally not what I was going for when I was drawing him but I knew when he ended up looking like that… (sigh) That shirt of his is actually based on an existing Quiksilver shirt that I own (yup, that’s practically how I look–beard, hair, and all, plus some snazzy glasses )… I didn’t want to, um, exaggerate his gestures…

Great pieces of work yo.

For serious.

Awesome work dude! My only concern is that the womans ear might be a little too high up and far back. But really, its just me nitpicking. Great work!! :lovin:

I like the guys pose and clothes especially the folds detail he looks cool ^^ .

whoaa. good stuff Seb. ANd Norman Rockwell is the greatest illustrator ever.

The guy’s face seems a little off because the features are a bit skewed. Pay extra attention to the shape of the eye socket area, the upper lids, the plane shift on the tip of the nose, and the corners of the mouth and you should be straight. The feel of the fabric isn’t all there, and I think it’s mainly due to the folds and wrinkles ( to suggest the weight of the fabric), and the contrast between lights and darks( to suggest texture)
Looking preeetty good though man. I really like the hair on the girl. Kinda remind me of Leyendecker’s hairs (sorta)

Interesting work…The sharpshooter gal reminds me of Shinkiro’s art style.

Thanx JUDGEMENT DAY, NOROUND3, SASMASTA… And Shinkiro’s style?.. Really?..

No, you’re right… If I flip her image, her ear looks a tad too far off her face… I guess I just don’t notice it with this angle… My brain works in one direction at most times, I get stuff at the right higher than usual–that’s why I gotta be extra careful when drawing front portraits…

Hehe… The more I look at them, the more I get used to them that’s why I kinda miss off bad spots… :wgrin: But whenever I do a new piece, I end up disliking my previous works more and more (probably, and I would like to think that it’s because I’m learning more)…

And I loooove Rockwell… And Leyendecker!.. I actually referenced Grace Kelly’s (my favourite actress) hair for the sharpshooter gal…

Anywho, here’s a piece I’ve been working with on and off for the past three months… (yeah, I suck… :wgrin:) Little work here, little work there, and it took me three months+ to finish just her… And I have more plans to making the entire work into a poster piece… Crits?.. Her hair’s a little bare and I was considering putting on a crown or something… Too weird?..

I guess my failing aspect is my researching as I only got to use pics off the net for the roller skates…

Superb job Seba! Looks great!

Looks awesome. Nice coloring too.

jesus thats good…
