The mentality that is “here’s who I am, DEAL WITH IT.” Is detrimental to self improvement. Having pride in one’s self is very important, but if you don’t listen to the constructive criticism of others, and really take it to heart, then that pride is for naught. If you get the same “no-mind talk” from Tanaka every time you ask him about your game…well? What does that tell you?
Honestly, if you don’t learn anything from Jeff when you ask him, then it’s extremely likely that you’re just not listening.
As for understanding of the game…let’s just say there’s more to it then memorization, or patten. Even if you could read and comprehend Chinese, it doesn’t mean you’d understand, say, the Tao Te Ching.

I know the difference between understanding and memorization…I know because I learned a second language…and that comes with memorization as well…you can’t just understand and have it click it comes through experience and alot of time getting taught…Also being stationed outside the us doesn’t change the principal of US law…you can be stationed in the US ya know.

Thank you! The only thing wrong with the mentality of our scene is all the negativity like that. We’re kind of stuck in limbo, super 4 purgatory if you will, and if it weren’t for tournament wars right now our scene would be on a low note. Everything has highs and lows; nothing in life is a straight line from point A to point B. You can’t just expect all this new blood we got in SF4 to just hop right into the game with the same mentality as people who have been playing street fighter all their lives. Not to say none of the new players haven’t played SF, but I feel like some of us are setting the bar quite highly and then being disappointed.
Take a step back and ask yourself if you’re really trying to improve the quality of the scene if you’re just constantly shitting on it. Why don’t you work on something constructive? Give players you beat one quality tip after the loss (if they want, some people are kinda defensive). Not something like “stop being so predictable” but for example I was watching duncan’s rufus get beat up by future’s rog at GW. He asked for tips, so I analyzed his play and he was letting him jump in for free every time. Got scared and just blocked every time only to get into balrog jab pressure. I told him to stop letting him jump for free and to just tap him with c.mp to start, just let that be your trigger finger anti-air - Jason stopped getting absolutely free pressure and the match evened up much more. Can’t be so obviously scared of your opponent, no matter how scared you really are. Not showing that is easier said than done, and comes with experience really.
I understand the frustration with our scene that people get, but there are better ways to deal with it.
It takes practice. Lots of practice. I am/was similar in that my mind is very active, constantly analyzing, never taking a break. It lead to a lot of stress for tournament matches because there’s too much for analyzing.
Tournament play is not really the time for that kind of analysis, though that kind of analysis helps you reach the point where things become reflexes rather than thought. By the time you’ve thought about it, you’ve wasted too much potential time. Then when it doesn’t work out, you get frustrated. When you are flustered or frustrated by your choice, you have lost the match. You aren’t thinking about what’s at hand, you’re thinking about the past. Like Pablo says, “I look towards the FUTURE!” none of this downback shit, the future (lol) is really what matters in a fighting game round.
I’d love to challenge anyone to practice some basic meditation before a big match.
Yes. Yes yes yes. While you should take things that people say with a grain of salt, you should still take them. Even if you don’t agree, don’t see it, don’t want to hear it, you should try to at least just sit down and think about what they said. They said it for a reason. I again reminisce upon a time when I complained all the fucking time. It was a mindset, and I was unaware of it. It was unenjoyable, and who knows how long I carried on for. I always found something to complain about.
One day, I was walking home from school with a friend and I whined about something and she was like, “OHMYGODYOUCOMPLAINTOOFUCKINGMUCH! STOP! Just stop complaining!” and I was like whoa. Her approach, her explosion, forced me to think about it. I didn’t want to, but I did… and I realized that yes, I was a bitch-made whiner. Once someone finally got through to me, it helped me change for the better. I’ve brought this up a few times and while it seems like a trivial thing, “quit whining so much,” it was really the first time in my life someone took the right approach to get through to me. It hurt my feelings at the moment but it was what I needed.
Everyone needs a different approach. What gets through to me may not be what gets through to Carlos. EDIT: Case in point. Most the approaches were sort of on the offensive. You can lead Carlos to the pond of tranquility but you can’t funnel it down his throat. Carlos does not want to change the way he thinks, so the way he thinks is not going to change. Who are we to say the way he thinks is wrong? I like Tanaka’s approach in that he leaves the opportunity there… straight up matrix red pill blue pill shit. Which is the way it should be done.
And can I just say that if I were still 20, and interested in singles tournaments, that I would complain too? I wouldn’t bring up other things I can do that validate me as a human being at that age, I would just be like this sucks. I would complain on more than one occasion. So would you guys! Have y’all forgotten what it’s like to be 20 and really wish you were 21 for whatever reason. I don’t think you realize just how much this guy likes to play in tournaments. Have none of you noticed how giddy he gets and how he talks like twice as much in the middle of tournaments? C’mon now. Quit hatin’.
