you know you’re in a high quality thread when everyone posts their version of the tier list with little justification/discussion of where things are even when asked.
Well you kinda have to expect that. The game has had no major tournaments yet so every “tier list” is just one person’s opinion on where a character is to, and some of us probably haven’t even bothered to thoroughly try out every character and see what their strengths and weaknesses are against other characters.
Let’s just hope that EVO attracts a lot more people to the game so we can have a bigger variety of used characters, although at this point, EVO looks like it’s gonna be one big SSF4 orgasm, so i’m not particularly optimistic about that.
Final Round was the biggest tournament UAS has seen or will see until Devastation or Evo. Seeing as how Kurasa and Marn both got top 3 you guys should be more inclined to believe their opinions on the tier list. They can rightfully say they have more high level experience than most of the other guys posting in this thread. Facing people online is not real information that should be included in a matchup chart.
I can respect their opinions, but that doesn’t mean that they are right. Last I checked, tier lists are comprised of hard data on results from numerous tournaments, character match-ups etc, not opinions.
Marn sucks. Alex sucks. Zero sucks.
hhahahahahaha j/k
But real talk, I haven’t really adjusted my interpretation of the tier list at all and I’m glad to give justifications on everyone’s placing…I just don’t want to sit behind my comp typing out a huge paper because of TLDR syndrome. I’ll gladly discuss individual placings with ya. For reference, I rank the characters as such:
A tier:
Zero
Jun
Alex
Chun
Doronjo
Ryu
Morrigan
B tier:
Yatter-1
Yatter-2
Batsu
Saki
Tekkaman Blade
Ippatsuman (edit)
Polimar (edit)
B- and below:
Everyone else
I don’t think that this game has an S-tier that is just heads and shoulders above the rest of the cast, but I do think that this game has a VERY large A-tier. That’s good game balance at work.
As far as placings go, if the character is not on the list, its because I don’t think its fair to judge that character yet due to the lack of REAL results. Saying “I have an godly online Blade but my Megaman sucks” is not justification to place Blade in the A-tier and Megaman in the C-tier. So rather than blindly speculating on the characters that I haven’t seen in the hands of an above average player, I chose to omit.
As a side note: I think that Yatter-1 probably belongs in the A-tier as well, but his assist just keeps me from bumping him since all the characters that I listed in A-tier have godlike assists (and yes…Doronjo’s assist is GODLIKE!!! Its the biggest mindfuck ever).
Edit: Polimar probably deserves a bump as well, but I’ve really only seen Royal Flush and PJ rep that dude. His assist is the $-shot, but I’m not too sold on his normals. I may just need to see more of his shiz.
I never said Alex is a bad character but I just disagree with him being next to Zero. I think Zero is on top but Alex up on top with Zero I dont agree with. After playing Marn awhile ago I know what to watch out for against Alex to keep him away. I was starting to get the hang of his Alex but his Zero is a problem. I need to fight his Zero again. I think Y-1 is probably a bit better than Jun but they probably are very equal in threats. Yeah with the right assist for Yatterman-1 it can be very hard to chase him down. If anything Yatterman may end up being high on the tier list.
Morrigan top tier? I don’t know if I agree with that.
She’s def the best she’s been in years (coming from a guy that mains her in MvC2 and every other game she appears in). But top tier? I’d say high mid.
I don’t think Jun should be that high either. Blade should definitely be Top tier. Good HP, good damage, good mix-ups and combos. Plus he’s a potential threat with one bar and up since he can pushblock, that rapid super thing (dunno the name for it). Its like one frame (maybe exaggeration, buts its damn fast). Not TOO damaging but still a punisher like that has to be respected. Also his jumping H is even better than ‘Vanilla’ Tekkaman in terms of range and hitbox. Yatter-1 may have some interesting things and the game is still young but from what I’ve seen so far Yatter-2 is def better and shouldn’t be in the same tier.
I guess I could see Saki being B with her unblockable set-ups and command grabs, decent damage, zoning but I see her closer as just mid.
I’ve been watching a lot of vids of Polimar but I just don’t see how he’s top or even high mid. Yeah his damage is really good (hate aeriel rave into throw super reset) but its really easy to keep him away. Old School Tekkaman does comparable damage and takes less (just upped a vid of me abusing the shit of aeriel rave ~ M windmill ~ beam super; that’s over 30K for one bar and he can do two windmills for for about 23K). I don’t see much of a mix-up game for him either and when I figured out his pose ~ throw was techable, well… =/
We haven’t seen much Gold lightman, but he’s gotta be low. I mean they made his 360 techable, only tool against zoners in the earthquake (2,2+Attack I think?) and he loses even more free against Old school Tekkaman and Saki. He’s good against people that aren’t good against giants though and need to fight hand to hand (ie. Polimar).
BTW I think Frank will be god tier (j/k). People are sleeping on Mr. West though.
Actually I agree with a lot of Gnik’s character analysis’s and potential tier placement in his movelist FAQ. Again, just my two cents.
Tier Whore? I played Zero and Alex at Capcom Fight Club lol. I made that team. People said Alex was trash still I started playing him. Is it my fault they just happened to be the best?
Where is the Ippatsuman discussion? everyone seems to be placeing him mid to high tier but no one ever explains why they think so.
he is kinda slow but has a good super excellent jumping normals, can delay strings well and pressure better than most and keep it going longer aswell, has good runaway and extra movement options, decent projectiles, and decent damage and health and is excellent to var and dhc into, also has an assist that is OK but doesn’t help that many characters and probubly isn’t ideal for anyone. can get damage off of mega-crash and variable counter if you have the meter.
doesn’t seem to excel at much but can do a little bit of everything and is above average in most categories is my view.
to summarize in 2 words he’s well rounded. how far that can actually get him is a good question, and i suppose that makes him hard to place in the tiers.
but youve probably played as him more than me so you might be better off talking about him than me.
Ippatsuman has all the necessary tools needed for clean victories. He has strong air reset combos, a safe way to escape ground combos without the use of an assist, a really annoying projectile, an incredibly damaging baseball super that’s easy to land, I could go on. I think this will be my definitive personal tier list for now.
Character Tier List
Amazing Tier:
Tekkaman Blade, Saki, Zero
Great Tier:
Chun-Li, Doronjo, Ippatsuman, Jun the Swan, Morrigan, Polimar, Ryu, Tekkaman, Yatterman-1, Yatterman-2
Good Tier:
Alex, Batsu, Ken the Eagle, Frank West, Joe the Condor, Karas, PTX-40A, Roll, Viewtiful Joe
Matchup Tier:
Gold Lightan
Zero hasn’t been fully explored yet; just yesterday someone showed me how to do a blind crossup on a grounded character from the air using his diving slice move. His options are nuts.
Saki keepaway is becoming more and more evolved. If you’ve got a character who is even close to below average foot and dash speed, you’re screwed pretty hard. She does require quick thinking to use and can fold under the right pressure.
Morrigan’s mixups have gotten much better, but her LVL1s are poor unless you’re going for gimmick Var. Combos. Her dash is good, but it’s slow for escape.
I still haven’t seen any pro Y-2 play at all. I think her tier placement relies almost entirely on her robot friend. With it you can put the pressure on anyone anywhere, you can interrupt supers and combos and can also build meter during its use. If it wasn’t for that I don’t think she could do anything differently than the rest of the cast.
Assist Tier List
Amazing Tier:
Chun-Li, Morrigan, Polimar, Roll, Ryu, Tekkaman
Good Tier:
Alex, Batsu, Doronjo, Frank West, Ippatsuman, Jun the Swan, Ken the Eagle, Karas, Yatterman-2, Zero
Poor Tier:
Joe the Condor, Tekkaman Blade, Viewtiful Joe, Yatterman-1
Don’t go “WAT IS UP WIT DAT” just give me some honest answers on which characters need to be moved around. Youtube videos are a big help. I really want to see some videos of Marn rocking with Alex, because I only saw him twice at Winter Brawl.
If I could say, there’s no doronjo in either list
The only Doronjo I have seen played on UAS is ll.nd’s. I NEED MORE INFO
Here’s my questions Kurasa, Could you please explain why you feel that Ryu and Morrigan are both A and T-Blade is B? Most of it I agree with, I would prolly out Morrigan in A before I put Ryu there, but I still feel like they both belong in B and I don’t see what puts Batsu in B tier either, I’d put him in C! Just wanna know why you feel the way you do bout those characters!
Awesome
Hmm okay Marn well I still want to play you again. Well I am done arguing with you, Lets just Fight Yo!! We chill now? It is not your fault they are the best cause I am not sold on Alex being best but they are hella good. Your Zero is godly though!
I’m not even gonna speculate anymore until I start playing more people. And go to a tourney ***That doesnt get fucking canceled on my fucking arrival. ***Yeah good shit by the way, Houston. But have to agree with Marn on 2 things. Alex and Zero are extremely good. They are one of the best characters in the game. So what Iz gonna do. Is make a obvious list and a list of characters on the wildcard list.
Obvious good characters thats fighting 4 tops in my book; low risk, high rewards:
Zero-Jun-Ryu-Alex-Chun-Tekkaman Blade-Ippatsuman
Zero:
+Best Mix-up Game imo
+One of the best point characters
+Great Pressure, Good assist
+Nice Supers, DHC into Soul Body
+Very Evasive
+Moderate Damage potential on long Combo Strings
-Shitty Defense
Jun:
+Can handle any character on the game (No bad matchups at all)
+Great Assist
+Solid in all departments.
Ryu:
+Very damaging BBQs for being a non-tank.
+Solid in all departments
+One of the best assists
+Decent match-ups
-Very predictable
Alex:
+Strongest Tank imo
+best BBQ damage potential.
+Nice assist
+Massive Stamina
-Difficult to get in.
Chun:
- Solid in all departments
- Decent BBQs
- One of the best lv3s
- One of the best assists
Tekkaman Blade:
+Best Point Character in the game (Yes I said it).
+Tops in Normals.
+Very hard to get in on Blade.
+Crash interlude is the 2nd best punisher move in TvC. Low damage, but Useful.
+High priority.
+Great BBQs
-Possibly the worst assist in the game.
-Terrible DHCs: one of the worst
-Bad Level 3. Almost useless without the proper partner.
Ippatsuman:
+Excellent Point character
+One of the best projectiles
+Decent assist. Nice combo potential
+Very damaging grab super reset.
+Great BBQs.
+Great Supers. Air Grab one of the best supers.
+Effective Pressure game along with Zero, Tekkaman Blade, Yatterman-1, and Chun.
-Level 3 sucks but has nice potential without risking punishment when in clutch moment. All around useless, however.
Characters that put in work and show MAD promise:
Frank West-Saki-Yatterman-2-Doronjo-Polimar
Frank West:
+Best and safest Launchers (next to Soki, Tekkaman Blade, and Y-2)
+Underrated Assist potential (Frank can break combos with camera from decent range)
+one of the most damaging bbqs off Standing C or Cr. C between 20%-30%.
+Cr.Medium can stuff IAD’s very easily, and very safe. Remember Cyclops’ Cr.HK from XvSF. Kind of like that but of course not as bad.
+Can cancel any normal into Retreat Command roll. Especially Jumping Down C upon landing.
+Very Good normals and specials moves. Standing C into Retreat roll or Bat has great zone potential.
+Real Mega Buster best punisher in game.
+Excellent DHCs
-Lv3 not that practical.
-Has very bad match-ups.
-Difficult to use properly.
Saki:
+Best Zoning potential
+Solid
+Annoying Keepaway Tactics
+Excellent Supers
+High Damage, No Meter
-Iffy Assist
-Falls short under moderate pressure
Yatterman-2:
+One of the best level one supers’ in the game. Robot and bouncy electric ball. Lol.
+Extremely fast character.
+DHC potential is very good.
o Okay assist. I personally think it has uses.
- Good level 3.
- Uses meter a lot to be effective in game.
Doronjo:
+Assist is **Indeed **a mindfuck as Kurasa has said. Peeps just don’t know about it yet. One of the best assists imo.
+Rolling Ball super has multiple uses.
+Female tank? Highest damage of all females? Im not sure. Someone correct me on this.
+Excellent Defensive playing style.
+Nice point character.
-Level 3 not as easy to land as in CGoH.
-Not very mobile.
-Bad under pressure as like Saki.
Polimar:
+Highly Strong Normals
+Team Supers compliment almost every character.
+One of the best if not Best assist in the game. Assist goes good with any character.
+One of the best damage from BBQs as well as variable tag into air grab resets.
+One of the best practical and easily comboable level 3s. Damage scaling barely affects it.
-Possibly the highest risk character.
-No real spacing game.
-No projectiles.
! Polimar is the flyest character in the game.
Everyone else is in limbo but thats about it.
Also Ippatsuman has some annoying normals; he’s fairly quick. His combos are average but solid enough. His zoning like you said is good but not the best.
I think you guys are way overplaying Morrigan. She is very balanced; this is her strength. Soul Fist zoning has never been stronger but her damage isn’t frightening at any less than level 3 so she’s basically just meter building by controlling space. Her mix-up only comes into account after you have made your opponent respect the zoning as I’ve have learned the hard way. Want to know why the air dash is not all that great and another reason she’s not “amazing” or “top tier”? Simple because of this system’s juggle system. A lot of people can simply jab or use some other normal to hit you out of the dash. As a person that plays her in marvel what would be better is to have a normal ground dash so that she doesn’t potential get put in harm’s way when she goes airborne. Like that game make Kuchuu dash a command activated movement solidifying her mix-up game. More execution to be sure but you won’t be nearly as vulnerable. Her pressure is much easier to pushblock too.
I think she’s really good…just not top tier. But again, just my opinion; certainly ready to admit I’m wrong.
I don’t see how Ryu can’t be anything but top tier. He’s hardly changed since the first version of TvC and even got a few improvements unlike Karas. Should be a no brainer. I don’t see how Saki is “amazing” or “top tier” either but as a Saki player that sleeps somewhat on her unblockable set-ups maybe I’m missing something.
???
You do know Jun is really good, right? Does she look like Polimar to you? She is almost almost as good as Ken was in CGoH. Aside from his outrageous runaway game he used to have. And it is agreed by tourney players and casual alike as far as I’m concerned that everything about Jun’s game is nothing less of excellence… So low risk, high rewards in my humble opinion, man. What else can I say?
I don’t know, even after seeing Wong play her I just really agree with this analysis, here:
*Perhaps no character in the game has changed more substantially from CGoH than
Jun. She used to be an easy-to-use character with extremely dependable combos.
Now, she’s the queen of long ground strings and extension combos, with a side
of mix-up attacks. About the only thing that hasn’t changed is that she’s
still a great partner character for most people.
Jun’s biggest strength is her offense on the ground. If she gets you with so
much as a cL when you’re on the ground, expect to be kicked at least 20 times
and probably blown up before you get to move again. She’s also packing a
couple tricky moves to try to overcome your guard, should you try to block her
attacks.
Unfortunately, Jun isn’t tremendously versatile. Sure, String Bomb acts kind
of like a projectile, but it’s slow, doesn’t go the full screen, and the bulk
of the damage doesn’t occur until you blow the bombs up, which won’t happen at
all if you get hit. Her combos are also not nearly as strong when they hit
as a juggle, so if your opponents stick to the air your damage output takes a
big hit. She also doesn’t have terribly high health, which limits her ability
to go toe to toe with the big damage dealers.
In terms of matchups, Jun doesn’t have too many cases where she dominates.
Her damage output is pretty high on a grounded opponent, so characters like
Zero and Karas are at the same risk they’d be at with anyone who deals a lot
of damage. She’s also pretty fast and her combos are pretty safe, so those
who rely on punishing combos will find they have little to work with against
Jun.
On the other end of the scale, though, there are quite a few characters who can
give Jun trouble. By far the worst is her team-mate Ken, who is almost never
on the ground and thus frustrates her attempts to use ground strings to no end.
She also has pretty bad range and her projectile isn’t stellar, so characters
with great range like Soki and Tekkaman are problematic for her, and she isn’t
amazing at closing in on keep-away characters, either.
Thankfully, Jun is a fairly capable Giant fighter. Her String Bombs aren’t
very useful against them, but her Dancing Swan puts them into hit stun,
which is really scary for them. Also, her ultimate comes out REALLY fast,
so they have to be really careful not to give her an opening.
Jun is a bit unique in that her strongest aspect is actually her performance
in teams. For one thing, her assist is amazing, it gives a ton of stagger (but
the next hit doesn’t lift), and it even leaves a handy bomb which you can use
the next time Jun comes in. Secondly, Talon Burst is probably the game’s best
DHC super, after it hits you can follow up with almost anything and it will
hit, even if you did Talon Burst in an air combo. Just try to make sure you
don’t share bad matchups with your partner.
Competitively, Jun probably falls somewhere towards the lower middle. She’s
not too strong on her own, but she compliments a lot of other characters well.
Make sure you put her partner abilities to good use, or you’d be better served
by someone else.
*
EDIT: Forgot about Dancing Swan putting giants in hitstun, interesting.
