sf4 is the hardest game to be an artist in
Bullshit. Level 3 crumples has a ton of ink splatter flying around.
Straight up artist status.
Tears in my eyes from this comment.
Play Mario Paint imo.
What would SSF4 be like without ultras?
Or little Big planet
Why do people hate criticism so much? So what if they don’t same opinion you do. Suck it up people are different.
Could somebody answer my question from a few pages back, I’m really trying to understand why is it that Ryu is such an important yardstick in Viscant’s post. If Ken is just a gimmicky Ryu, wouldn’t it be better to just remove him from the game instead of having a gimped version of the same character? Also, why is it that the character that is good at everything needs to continue being good for the health of the game? I can understand why Guile and Dhalsim being great means that the game is overly defensive, but similarly having a character that is solid at everything excel in the game seems like a problem too.
‘‘Fei seems somewhat overrated, though the idea that he could BE overrated, or said to be top-tier by serious players, is evidence that he?s about where we want him to be.’’
capcom fei needs help …only a little though
It’s amazing how many people we have here being exposed to such great insight only to have it all go completely over their heads.
SRK has gotten older but not an iota wiser over the years.
its obvious how little do you know about the game
the same goes for you
uif i remember well, him, Robo Ky and possibly eddie (compared to his other incarnations at least)
Less Defensive.
Less Bullshit.
Better Game? Maybe.
No, it doesn’t.
yes, it does.
The Basis of 95% of fighters is gimmicks…gotcha.
Why Quake? Why not Doom? Duke Nukem 3D? Hexen?
What exactly is it that makes you choose one game over another?
I own and enjoy a lot of fighting games, and yet there are definitely those that I play much more often than others. The same is true for everyone here. Why exactly is that?
Quite simply because some are more fun to play that others. And, as I said, that “fun” comes from the character selection in any particular game. If SSF4 didn’t have Abel, Viper, Hakan, Sakura, or Cody I simply wouldn’t enjoy the game as much.
Is it because I <3 Sakura’s cute skirt? Is it because Abel’s rippling muscles are sexy? Is it because “ANIME!”? No, no, and no.
It’s because their play styles are compatible with the way my brain works. It’s because they are fun to play. It’s because the strategies and mind games that they employ are satisfying to me.
If you’re just playing video games to be “high level” and win tourneys and have no interest in “enjoyment” or “fun”, then you’re doing it wrong. There are easier ways to make money.
**“Winning is fun. Playing characters you enjoy is fun. Combine the two and fun is maximized.” **<— my entire argument for character balance summarized.
If a game offers 35 characters, then the goal should be to make 35 characters “optimal” or at least reasonably near “optimal”.
A game that has only 1 “optimal” way of being played is inferior to a game that has 2 “optimal” ways of being played.
A game that has 2 “optimal” ways of being played is inferior to a game that has 3 “optimal” ways of being played.
…
A game that has x “optimal” ways of being played is inferior to a game that has x+1 “optimal” ways of being played.
Maybe using rail gun exclusively in Quake isn’t viable NOW. But, what if ID made it so? How would that be bad? All it would do is add another way the game can be played, which benefits everybody in the long run.
ryu always excels at a closer range zoning and usually wrecking dudes on wakeup, and isn’t gimmicky. i think it implies that the game will be played at less than full screen far more often and favours more active play styles.
Viscant should really come back here because a lot of people seem to be missing out on what he said. He said that looking at the top tier of a respective game would show what strengths would be exemplified through the game’s system. If guile and dhalsim was top, that would often mean that it’s a more defense oriented game, much slower paced and probably less offense going on. Vega being top means that something like defensive mobility would be favored within the game’s system because vega’s design is that of having long pokes and fast walk speed. He also goes on to say that vega’s design has been changed over the years and has been tweaked.
He also says Ryu is more of a “fundamentals” character than Ken. Ryu’s footsies are often better and so is his fireball. Ken would be more “gimmicky” because he relies on other things to get his offense going. Hence why if Ken is better than Ryu, that probably means that the game’s system rewards something else than the fundamentals. But as he stated himself, there’s exceptions to this.
That’s what I got out of what he’s saying. I actually tried to think of some games after reading this yesterday and it does seem to hold pretty well.
It’s an interesting subject to say the least.
Hace and PBD ruining another thread. Color me shocked.
uh bc quake is far and away the best shooter when judged empirically? (idk which quake theres a lot fo good ways to play it) doom is a lot of fun to duel on as well and lmao if you play hexen vs
someone never played vq3 i guess bc railgun is really really strong to the point that you can pretty much build a whole playstyle around it since its risk vs reward has a big inequality but there are still people like that one real good pro who is sweet @ using rockets aggressively. anyway not really sure what youre getting at here it just looks like you are trying to talk about a game you dont play??
Hey remember that time i was about to go on a sidetrack about the storyline of Tekken and I decided to just STFU, because it wasn’t helping anyone and would be a general distraction from the thread.
Try replacing Tekken in that sentence with (insert FPS name here).
